Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher is a good one.

Wikipedia has a list of banned books (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_books), although I'm not sure how complete it is.

Of that wikipedia list, I've only read Voltaire's Candide and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four. They are both amongst my favourite books. I am not knowledgeable in field of banned literature so there are probably more that I liked.

Many of such books were only banned in one country and for reasons pertaining to the social climate of the day. It's funny to hear about certain books being banned that currently would be little regarded as controversial.

1984 for me. The reason it was banned is incredibly obvious, but I didn't know it was almost banned in Florida for a "pro-communist theme." What complete idiot could possibly read through the entire book and still think the tone was leaning towards pro-communism?

I loved the Satanic Verses. Salman Rushdie has my respect for his books and his (previous?) hot wife.

The US government burned all copies of his books, destroyed his lab, and threw him in prison where he died. His name? Wilhelm Reich.

He was a psychologist trained directly under Freud who discovered a mechanical mechanism of libido that's present throughout all nature.

If someone is put through all that by the powers that be then I get interested in what they had to say.

Mass Psychology of Fascism and Function of The Orgasm are two of his books that I've read so far.

Timothy Findley's The Wars. Not that I actually enjoyed the book. It is quite difficult to read at some points, gruesome and grotesque. But it does show the bloody side of war that many books gloss over with heroism. It wasn't banned for very long. Findley's like a national hero... kind of.

Forster's Maurice is another great book that had the shaft at one point.

Yeah, it was banned in... some country in Africa because it had 'black' in the title. And some people think I'm too sensitive.

I love the Lorax. I'm trying to find the DVD.

We watched the Lorax for social studies class in 10th grade. The animated version's even better than the book (although some of the songs are just plain weird).

South Africa. They banned it because it had 'black' in the title and they had the apartheid thing going on.

I can see how apartheid would make a difference. I just vaguely remembered a high school English class where the teacher was talking about Black Beauty being banned. But I never really had any interest in global goings on, so I was probably only half listening.

Censorship of the word black is not limited to South Africa. Does anyone recall Yu-Gi-Oh's 4kids dub... We now had the "Dark" Magician. And the card of Red Eyes Black Dragon was changed to "Red Eyes B. Dragon".

It's only a colour. I don't see how it's racist, when It's clearly referring to the colour.

Sailor Moon, Black Lady became Wicked Lady. But that came from PC loving Canadians.

Annie on my Mind. It wasn't half bad, though not spectacular.

I've read quite a few off that list. My faves were Animal Farm, Lorax, Clockwork Orange, 1984. A lot of books banned for stupid reasons...

Of course some are more obvious...Anarchists Handbook. *chuckle*

Yes but the whole thing was a joke. Umm like well this probably doesn't apply to you but the stereotype for Catholics amongst non-Catholics is that they're very religious, the stereotype for Catholics amongst Catholics is that we're (I consider myself raised "half-Catholic" hence the "we") only religious for 1-2 hours on Sundays. It should also be noted that the stereotypical Catholic prayer starts "God I know I haven't been to church in a long time..." Its all in good fun. Don't even get me started on my dad being part Jewish...

Edit: Cather in the Rye is banned? Where? I swore it was required reading in HS (JHS maybe?)

Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury - Novel Banned in United States for its criticism of US politics, censorship and lack of freedom of speech and criticism of the continuously increasing reliance on technology .

Hahaha, I read this in 9th grade. (it was an awesome book)
and just to add a short note. "banned" in America doesn't mean you can't read it or anything. It just a suggestion you don't and it's put on a list of I guess "discrete books".

I think it's hilarious to see how may countries have banned "Borat" and the "South Park Movie", in the banned films section.

I loved Clockwork Orange and 1984. I've also started on Lolita. Oh well, sue me for reading something with substance.

And for all those parents who freak out when they find their kids reading books which mention sex, what do you think they're going to do when they go off to college? Study?

Wow. Alice is so banworthy that she gets other people banned just for referencing her. Even Minoru never managed that...

So is she like Candyman? If we say "Meggles" five times in a mirror, does she appear? What if one of those times, we actually say "Muggles". Does Snape appear instead? I've never understood how these things work...

Lets see... banned books.... Hmmm...

How many people remember the comic strip Bloom County? How many people lived in places where the strip kept getting dropped for "questionable" content, then picked back up by popular demand? Somewhere in my files I've got a copy of a Bangor Daily News editorial page where they listed nothing but readers' outraged feedback at Bloom County's omission from the paper. The strip was reinstated within a week.

I wasn't trying to ban anyone, I don't know if Kenpachi broke a rule or something, but I didn't do anything wrong, I haven't been causing trouble or anything and I'm not AC, so why can't you just let that go?

It's funny here in Ireland: some of the stuff that was once banned has now not only had that ban lifted, but is now required on the Leaving Certificate (kind of like SATs in the US, I would guess) syllabus :] Stuff like Philadelphia, Here I Come and even some Shakespeare works.

Sanctuary by William Faulkner. had to read it for a class recently. pretty good, rather complex, lots of point of view shifting (and I do mean lots). part of the Southern Gothic style.
