Well, I'm ashamed to say I've only read The Catcher in the Rye, but anyway, my brother is reading it now, and it is bringing back such great memories. That was deffinately and is still my favorite book of all time. I love talking about it with him.
So anyway, any other fans? What are some other great ones?

I read that! Mostly because of its link to GitS. Cool story.

^This post saddens me. It's a shame people don't read it simply because it's an amazing book.
I personally loved it and it's one of my favorite books of all time.

I've read Franny and Zooey. Liked that better.
Read Catcher too...years ago when I was a teen

Salinger makes my blood boil. That's all I'll post, or I won't be civil.

I cannot comprehend why everyone holds The Catcher in the Rye so dearly. It had to be read for grade 10 english... well, I really only went for maybe a week before skipping the entirety of the semester but I still read it out of interest. Could someone explain to me the merit of this book. I just found it to be the story of a disaffected, pretentious youth on his little escapade. Maybe I just cannot relate to the main character.
I prefer Battle Royale and A Clockwork Orange. Both novels are better than their respective films and Alex, everyone's favourite droog, is a much more captivating narrator than Holden Caulfield.

Catcher in the Rye is overrated. It's not a bad book, persay, and it should garner some interest for being somewhat groundbreaking when it was first published (in the 1950's, I believe), but there are far better works out there.

I feel it gets all the acclaim it deserves. It's my opinion of course, but it is one of the best books I've ever read.

I ****in hated the Catcher and the Rye. IMO, it was so boring I couldn't get into it at all...I just used spark notes for school.
Mein Kampf is a pretty good book, though.

lol flamebait.
I still haven't finished the Catcher in the Rye, but found it interesting enough to continue reading for recreation.

I've read CitR, Nine Stories, and Franny and Zooey so...I'm a fan.
Being forced to read a book at school pretty much guarantees a hateful response. Besides Lord of the Flies, I intensely disliked all the books I've been forced to read during school.

I forgot to mention that A Separate Peace needs to die in a fire.

Strange, I liked most of the books we read in school, with the exception of Crime and Punishment- that book just dragged on and on.
We never had to read any Salinger in any of my classes, though. I only read Catcher in the Rye to see what all the fuss was about.
And yes, A Separate Peace sucked. I read it when I was 12- I was rather bored that summer- and couldn't help but wonder where the hell it was going.

I actually liked almost all of the books I had to read in school. I even read the books my two brothers had from their classes. Catcher in the Rye was the only exception. Those who do like it, what you enjoy about it?

I didn't like the book, but the college dorm I'm living in has a plaque on one of the doors that says that JD Salinger stayed there. Problem was that he dropped out after one semester :P

I love the way he writes. The way Holden talks, the whole theme of the book...what's not to like??
I also enjoy pretty much everything we read in school. I just got through with Animal Farm, which was good, and now we're reading Lord of the Flies, which I've already read.

For some reason, when I pictured Holden in my head, I used Ichigo del Bleach as a character model.
But yeah, great book. Holden is the original "punk".
