His Dark Materials
Rapidly becoming one of my favorite books. Read through The Golden Compass in a couple of days and am now 3/4ths through The Subtle Knife.
Read these when I was 15 or so, while I don't remember too well the exact details of what happened I remembered being... not so much disappointed, but I can't think of the word I need... by the third book in that trilogy.
The story went from a intricate tale of a young woman to a huge war, I think what it was, was that the characters were drowned out by the circumstances they were in towards the end.
Most of my books will probably seem pretty boring, my most recent purchase around a month ago was a book on learning hebrew as well as a quite nice book listing a geocentric ephemeris from the 1000s to the year 3000.

My to read pile is pretty deep and I'm only slowly making my way through it.
For my birthday, a friend got me the first volume of the English translation of Crayon Shin-chan. I've also been borrowing The Notenki Memoirs from a friend for several months and just got around to starting it after cleaning on Saturday.
Though, while cleaning, I found a couple of gift cards for Borders (and, much to my surprise, were still good); took one of them down and bought Variable Star by Robert Heinlein/Spider Robinson, 1901 by Robert Conroy and Idoru by William Gibson. I should probably get around to buying a couple books for class, seeing as the semester is half over...
Most of my books will probably seem pretty boring[...]
I agree; I typically don't read fiction and when I do, it's usually nerdy stuff like Sci-Fi/Alternate History (see above). Typically, I read a lot of contemporary history or computing books. I'm probably the only one here having a serious debate as to whether I should buy the Fedora Toolkit or the SuSE Toolkit first and where I can start finding copies of 2600.

I read mostly a lot of non-fiction these days:
Kitchen Con - Writing on the Restaurant Racket (Trevor White)
Smile When You're Lying - Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer (Chuck Thompson)
Nickel and Dimed - On (Not) Getting By in America (Barbara Ehrenreich)

It's that autobiographies are ego trips. Don't understand why anybody would want to write about their life or why they think anybody would be interested in reading about it.
It's fine if you're learning about someone in the context of something else, but even then the sort of information you get from autobiographies is going to be superfluous towards your end unless you're writing... another biography!

I'm pretty much with you on this. The popularity of autobio, bio, and memoirs that the U.S. seems to have seen in the past decade or so is kind of confusing to me. Same thing goes for how the american "Alt comics" scene is so big on these badly drawn "autobio" comics, usually about people who are depressed nobodies that feel sorry for themselves.
I mean, I can see reading it about some famous figure of note, like a president or something, you know, someone who actually MATTERED, or if it's something generally interesting or amusing.
I can't find it, but I once read an article about a kind of funny incident; there was this memoirs writing class at a college. It was generally attended by upper middle class white kids who wrote about suburban malaise, teen rebellion, teenage and preteen romantic angst, etc. You know, the usual self indulgent Livejournal stuff. But ONE semester, they had someone unique in their class; an African immigrant who was a former child solider. Needless to say, this story made everyone who was writing sob stories about their dreary suburban childhood of social isolation amongst their peers feel kind of stupid and fake.
The only autobio material I would ever put to paper in any form would be restricted to stuff I thought was funny, since comedy I think can be given a pass.
But the usual autobio stuff, memoirs, etc. just leaves me cold. That's not to say there aren't any out there that are fascinating, but there is an overall impression among a lot of people, at least in my experience, that a large chunk of that stuff is of the college-course or writing workshop variety of self indulgent bawwwww.

That's how I see it. I picked up Fidel's bio because because he's a historical figure and I was interested in knowing more about him. I don't touch [auto-]biographies unless there's some historical or interesting things I could learn from it. I know I found Marylin Manson's bio quite interesting, but I'd never touch anyone else's (on his level of the social ladder) without good reason.

Copenhaver in his translation of the hermetic corpus is being a bit liberal when he sticks to the ptolemaic scheme of the universe for the lesser luminaries yet when it comes to the sun he tries to wrangle the text into adopting a heliocentric view which makes no sense in the context of what Hermes is saying at the time - it really isn't necessary to make these alterations as it doesn't affect the credibility of the work.
If he wants this to replace Scott there needs to be another edition with the allusions to evolution and advances in astronomy dropped. The notes he provides are great though.

He is a lot more into Buddhism by the time he wrote The Dharma Bums so it's pretty interesting in that respect, also I just love the idea of being a fire lookout, alone in a cabin on a mountain for a summer.
I've since started reading The Yage Letters which is excellent so far, i'm more of a fan of Ginnsberg than Burroughs but the subject matter is fascinating.
