I dunno, these books to me are a bit like the Catcher in the Rye in that you need to read them at a certain time in your life or they just won't appeal to you.
I bought some nice Everyman's Library editions of The Illiad, Odyssey and Aeneid. I'm about halfway into The Illiad right now.
In the same vein I also bought Paradise Lost (can't remember what publisher) but I guess I should only read that after I've finished the Greek/Roman stuff and The Divine Comedy so the circle is complete? I dunno which translation of The Divine Comedy to choose. I usually go for the scholarly translations or ones with parallel text but sometimes that isn't always best e.g. something like The Golden *** and I can imagine a piece of poetry being the same where a more literal translation crampts its style.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61MfNyi5yYL._SS500_.jpg
Product Description
Everyone has heard of vampires and werewolves, but how many have heard of the rokuro-kubi, the tsuchinoki or the sagari? Japan has a wealth of ghosts and monsters, collectively called yokai, which are totally unknown in the West. The bizarre and wonderful folklore of Japan includes giant corpse-eating rabbits, flaming pigs that steal human genitals, perverse water goblins, blood sucking trees, a dragon that impregnates women, cats who animate dead bodies, a zombie whale and a huge flesh eating sea cucumber that grows from a pair of discarded knickers!
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51xyjNCak1L._SS500_.jpg
Product Description
Kitty Norville, Alpha werewolf and host of The Midnight Hour, a radio call-in show, is contacted by a friend at the NIH's Center for the Study of Paranatural Biology. Three Army soldiers recently returned from the war in Afghanistan are being held at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs. They're killer werewolves—and post traumatic stress has left them unable to control their shape-shifting and unable to interact with people. Kitty agrees to see them, hoping to help by bringing them into her pack.
Meanwhile, Kitty gets sued for libel by CEO Harold Franklin after featuring Speedy Mart--his nationwide chain of 24-hour convenience stores with a reputation for attracting supernatural unpleasantness--on her show.
Very bad weather is on the horizon.
