RA Videl - Not Just Alpha On Forums

As some of you may know, I'm leaving to go to campus a month early to start training for my R.A position this year. Aside from dealing with kegs and such, what were your RAs like for those of you in or out of college? What made them useful, and what made them unbearable? If any, what kind of activities did they do, and how did they bring the floor/building together?

I want to be a fun but somewhat strict RA (like on here almost) so any useful tidbits are great. My RA for last year was wonderful, and was helpful; but its good to have a wide vierity of things, you know? Plus, free housing and food is a major plus. More money for me.

Not sure if I have much advice for you since I spent most of my college time in campus apartments, and although they were considered dorms and had an RA for every few buildings, the experience is likely dissimilar to a floor RA.

This is probably obvious, but try to strike that sweet spot between "only see you when the poop hits the fan" and "it's past midnight Friday and I heard you guys were playing cards, can I join in?" forced chumminess.

I don't know if you're going to try to stay on during the summer session, but if you're good/lucky you won't even have to move your stuff out if you get tapped for a position.

I'm already hired, and have moved in already. The summer classes are still going, and all I'm doing is training with my fellow RAs. I don't want to be fake with people, so I have to make sure I'm not being too friendly, even though I usually naturally am.

Its going to be hard to be a friend, and then become a authority figure on top of that. Its going to be traded on a lot.

Well, I'd like to think that they covered about everything in your training sessions. The rest is getting experience, really. Getting direct feedback from the residents would be appropriate managerial behavior and trying to clue in to the general mood and atmosphere of the place at all times would also be a good thing. Best thing to do is to go along with the flow and learn as you do. Be attentive to others and how they feel and you should be fine.

Sorry, that's the best I can offer; I've never seen an RA in action and I have no experience with such a position. Just be yourself, that'll be plenty.

Not as small as a mini-boss. Think sub-boss; they answer to the higher-ups, but have control over minions themselves, they aren't just powerful minions.

My roommate is actually the RA for my building. My advice:

1. Noise complaints take care of most problems. Don't get involved first hand, phone calls go a long way and cops will even look the other way to underage drinking if you only report a noise complaint. It kills two birds with one stone. No one gets arrested (unless you are an idiot and don't comply), and the party begins to die down.

2. Organize some events to promote communication between roommates and their neighbors. This includes ice cream socials and the such, get creative. You can have a lot of fun doing this. FREE FOOD and guitar hero go a long way too.

Do you have to meet with each room individually or just all at once?

Is it a dorm or college affiliated apartment?

The RA is a resident assistant. They aren't the boss of anyone, but they do provide a huge service to everyone. They know what you can and can't get in trouble for. Think about it, a bunch of freshman living on their own for the first time. Lots of things can go wrong (Locks outs big time).

Resident Assistant is my official name, and yeah, I have to talk to residents, get to know them, throw parties and such. Its a lot more complicated than I previously assumed. I have to meet with two floors at once, and then again seperatly.

Your roommate got screwed all the RAs at my school get their own rooms and the best parking spots, it's the one thing they get for dealing with all the kids

One good thing that my freshmen RA did was come down on people that got drunk and threw up in the hall or bathroom. No wants to have to deal with that. it makes the whole hall mad. Who wants to go into the bathroom and find half the stalls are coved with puke and won't be cleaned for a day.
