Hmm well every girl is different. You said you're shy...which could be not a bad thing, but if you're too shy you may screw over your chances with a girl you like. I don't know any girls (including myself) who like the idea of their guy not being confident. :/ I'd say definitely do not make it obvious that you're talking to a girl b/c you want to get with her, of course we all know that guys are interested in "that", but you need other reasons for liking someone, or else it's pretty pointless.

Becoming friends first is always a good idea IMO, but every girl might not feel the same.
