This is a truly sad story, I don't know how anyone could hurt a defenseless animal like this. Note: this is pretty disturbing stuff, don't read it if you are particularly sensitive.

Some people take their anger out on defenseless creatures. I never understood why people would want to hurt animals and babies and such. How sad must you be to do that kind of thing to a baby?

Like, seriously. People who do that kind of thing have serious issues. Throwing a bag of kittens in a river instead of giving them to a shelter, beating animals for the hell of it, and not feeding them to toughen them up. Its barbaric.

Its just plain sick how people can harm such beautiful animals. It just breaks my heart to almost tears just hearing how people does this all the time.
I dunno how people can just hurt pets who are there to make you happy, and look up to you with joy......sigh :(

This affects my emotions about as much as a retarded kid eating a goldfish at Wal-Mart.
Ummm.... I think people find it more acceptable to see an animal become food than they are with general cruelty / torture.
If the girls had humanely killed the kitten and barbequed it, there might have been less outrage.
Some people keep rabbits as pets, some people eat them. Like that.

I'd care if it was a tarantula. Sewer rats spread disease. Still, I might care if it was burned near to death.
You've attempted to make a clever point, and I get it, but burning is excruciatingly painful and this was a young kitten.

Yea, I kinda doubt that. Well, you did say "more acceptable" and "less outrage," so whatever. Of course, it'd still be unacceptable and outrageous to most in this country. But, that's why the Good Lord created adverbs. ;)

A "clever" point? Yea... Cats are domesticated animals. Meaning, they've been selectively bred by humans for generations in order to serve some type of a purpose to their breeders (Nowadays, in the U.S., it's mostly companionship). That purpose varies from animal to animal. Some provide food, some are labourers, others companions (such as cats), etc. I, myself, can't comprehend how anyone couldn't possibly see why people might value a domesticated animal (that is, a creature bred to be of some use to human beings) over a wild one (though, tame it may/may come to be).
Some people are more empathetic than others. Even if I didn't/don't (but I do) feel for this kitten or whatnot, I've had nearly 20 Years to understand why others might feel for it. Maybe they had/have a cat, maybe they live in cultures where cats are valued (which, we do), maybe they're not sufferers of an antisocial personality disorder (not calling anyone in particular a psychopath... :shifty:). I mean, it's safe to assume we're all reasonably intelligent non-extraterrestrials, yes?
Anywho, that's very sad. Personally, if I were in charge of the Making of Laws, I'd make the punishment for this type of crime much more harsh. Life Imprisonment without the Possibility of Parole. There are some sick bastards out there. Although, I've known a lot of Neglected/Emotionally Abused kids in my Lifetime, and Boy did they know how to torment an animal. I missed the days when neighbours were close enough to beat each other's kids. :( The Times have changed... Well, I guess I wasn't alive during those Times, but they sound darned appealing.

I'd rather shoot an animal or person in the head and let them die quickly than ever let them sit and burn. It's one of the most painful, if not THE most painful way to die.
So yeah, I'm glad the two girls were caught and charged, at least. Poor kitten. I have a soft spot for kittens.

The town complained that the fact a 16 year old boy was killed didn't get as much attention.
Hmm. Because it's CALIFORNIA? LA is where DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS were invented.
But I just about cried when I saw the picture of the poor thing. That's horrible.

Not really. I'm pretty sure (as sure as someone who doesn't live in California/doesn't know a lot about California can be) that famous California violence mostly comes from/originated from cities brimmed with Minorities living well under the Poverty Line. Neighbourhoods with less resources and all that Jazz.
The city where this incident took place is like, 70% White with families making OK money (average, I guess). With, like, less than 10% of persons living under the Poverty Line (2000 U.S. Census). I don't know how things are now, but it doesn't sound all that bad to me. But, of course, I don't really know what goes on in other States, so whatever.

I didn't even look at the story. Just read the replies. I don't think I could handle reading that, let alone seeing any graphics. I recently became a foster mom to a beautiful grey tabby (Aeryn) that I have bottle fed, and he's a constant companion to an older kitten (Kiko-Usagi) we rescued. I love my cats, and they do need discipline from time to time, especially my unfixed males who like to torment the fixed females around here, but no creature that can evoke such emotions such as that (dog, cat, any pet who can make you want to love it, even a tarantula!) should be treated like that.
BTW, Aeryn and Kiko-Usagi are doing fine, and getting into the usual kind of kitten trouble, but they are excellent bug hunters. I'll never let anything harm them, even if Cloud (my mischievious older male) does tease them. Even he gets some cat-jail time.
Interesting how cat-jail is the complete opposite of human jail. (Out you go, you little hairball with claws! Don't come back in till you can behave!)

Tarantulas are good to eat. I kill rats and mice with all the thought I give a cockroach.
So far as the girls, I hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and institutionalized. I am not a big cat fan but setting a cat on fire while it is trapped in a cage and laughing about it is psychotic at the least.

You're making an erroneous assumption that people care because kittens are cute.
If it were a tarantula or a pet (domesticated) rat, I'd feel the same way as if it were kittens. If the story was "teen girls buy bag of tarantulas and put it in microwave to watch bugs explode" I'd be just as disgusted as setting kittens or rats on fire.
No one would care about Sewer rats because they're vermin. Kittens are not, and I know you know the difference. If I had a swarm of kittens in my house, the last guy I'd call would be the exterminator. Animal control, maybe, but not an exterminator.
And hell, if it were a sewer rat, it'd still be cruel, but pretty stupid since burning a diseased creature would probably release biohazardous material into the air.

No I care about kittens because they are cute, they also do not walk around and lay a stream of pee everyplace they go like rats. Remember that the next time someone wants to let you hold their pet rat.
Tarantulas are like lobsters, there is no way you can tell me something that is quartered and moves around for 2 hours can feel pain in any real sense.

Caring about something because it's cute is a good enough reason for me . However, I hate squirrels, and they're generally considered cute.

It's not a matter of feeling pain...or perhaps it is. My deal is that I'm an empathetic person, so pretty much anything that's not vermin is something I care about. I have no qualms smashing a spider in my bathroom, but if someone has a pet tarantula, I will treat it with the same respect as I would give any pet, from a cute fuzzy kitten to the myriad of pet snakes one could acquire.
It's an act of cruelty, plain & simple. Rodents that are pests (to me) don't deserve humane treatment, but if you're going to stick something in a cage and set it on fire, even if it's vermin, that's still too cruel. There are obvious exceptions, like cochroaches, but if it's a pretty big creature (the size of a fist or bigger I'd say) there's no cause for a slow painful death. The old-fashioned mouse trap isn't humane, but it's quick and relatively painless, versus setting mines or some crap.

This **** happens all the time sadly. Not even a year ago here, I read in the newspaper about a bunch of teens ready to set a cat on fire (I honestly forget if they did or not), but the cat in the picture was doused in what looked like Gasoline, and had a brace on its neck to prevent it from licking itself. A week or so later in the paper, I read they had to put it down. Those people deserve to be burned alive, the ones who think it is fun doing such things. They like enjoyment of animals burning, the ones who find it funny would be the best to see up in flames.

I think Sewer Rats are pretty neat. And by Sewer Rats, I mean Rats in general. If you looked up Adaptability in the Encyclopedia, I'm sure there'd be a picture of a rat next to the entry. Yea, that wasn't funny... :( But, they're just so amazing. They can live pretty much anywhere.. The omnivorous ones can eat just about anything. That's the Mammalian toughness which allowed you peoples' ancestors to survive the dinosaurs (and outlive those lizard bastards). *Raises Glass of OJ* Heres to you, Rat!! The most likely mammal to live to see the Fall of Man and the Rise of this Planet's Future Overlords, the Octopi!! RATS ARE THE FUTURE!!
Leaving... but I really do like rats (even if they're carriers of all kinds of Nasties and destroyers of crops and wires and other things which are central to the survival of Man).

That's senseless and sad.. it's even worse that it's a kitten. At least a grown cat could have had a slightly better chance at getting away. I hope these girls get to spend quality time in prison with Michael Vick.
