View Full Version : Utah mines

This really sucks. The miners have been trapped in those mines for a while. On top of that there was a mountain bump (coal explosion due to pressure from seismic activity) that killed 3 rescue workers and hurt 6. They are still drilling, but we are talking 1500ft underground :/ You can't even dig that deep in South Florida.
I really can't imagine how those miners are doing down there, let alone if they are all still alive.

I live about 30 minutes by car from the mines. It's pretty crazy hearing this news. Our local stations are playing updates round the clock.

...Orem?
Yea. I used to live in Utah Valley.(American Fork. During and Sixteen years Before it got huge.) Recently moved to Idaho and I'm still hearing about it every day. It is a sad story, though. They apparently have emergency kits down there. So who knows, maybe they're still alive?

I heard they stopped searching for them now...

I'm from Provo, Utah. Everyone is talking about it and the news is just getting worse and worse. I really don't think they've survived this long...it's really sad.

Can I walk to your house?
I live on 9th east across the street from Gold's Gym about 12 minutes walk from BYU

They did and it can't be helped. With the death of 3 more it's inevitable. IF they're still alive there's no hope for them left. It will turn into a recovery operation when the mine is deemed safe enough to recover them.

It isnt a rescue mission anymore. It is a body search. Sad but true.
But the rescuers getting killed, that was really sour icing on the cake =/

Which Golds Gym? If it's not the 24 Hour one by University Mall, you must live right by one of my best buddies.(The one by Macey's.)
Sorry for the OT.

They keep saying "bump." I keep saying "what the hell? A 'bump' doesn't kill three people, it makes your head hurt for a few minutes."
"Don't worry, it was just a 'bump'! Only three people died in the 'bump', nothing to worry about!"

Its times like these i wonder why anyone would even take a job at a mine, they are really dangerous and it seems no-one even tries to make it safer outside of the workers.

They probably pay a lot nowadays.

Underground explosion cased by buildup of methane gas. In this case it traveled in a horizontal direction killing the three rescue workers.

Miners make about $45K a year. General Motors pays the same for counting parts all day.

Are you sure? I actually heard it was 60-70 Grand a year. I guess I was wrong.

That figue includes benefits. The figure I gave was take home pay, which is less after taxes.

Yeah. I believe those trapped miners are already dead. This latest event doesn't make the situation any better.

It is the sad truth. I know a lot of people get offended when people mention that the miners are already dead. We can't hide reality people.

^That's true, if they were indeed trapped with only minor injuries they could still be alive if not at least conscious.

Yes, but their chances are very small, and considering the risks of doing a direct approach (we just saw the risks first hand, three died), I'd consider it reckless to send more men down there. The mines are too unstable, and the chances of them being dead are too high. I believe the focus should shift to body recovery.

The mine will probably be closed for quite some time now, if it's ever reopened. They've struggled for years to keep that mine open, it'll probably close like Geneva Steel did.
There's a Gold's Gym by Macey's? Maybe there was, not one there anymore.
Golds Gym is here. I live close enough to throw rocks at it. 12 minutes from BYU (2 minutes for the lazy by car, who then spend half an hour parking).

Sorry for the local chat but I've not met anyone on AN that I knew was from Provo.

It's highly unlikely, though.
I'm still having a hard time fully grasping what has taken place. It's been quite a shocker. Especially about the rescue workers...I still can't believe it.

I've never met someone online that was from Utah, let alone Provo.
Right now I'm leeching off my parents, who live on Piute Drive (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Piute+Drive&sll=40.281195,-111.626308&sspn=0.007284,0.01442&ie=UTF8&ll=40.280377,-111.636329&spn=0.014569,0.028839&z=15&om=1) in the Indian Hills. Not too far from you, but probably not walking distance. Have you ever been to the Ream's grocery on University Parkway? (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=reams&near=Provo,+UT&fb=1&cid=40263119,-111667310,8662903187201878596&li=lmd&ie=UTF8&ll=40.268459,-111.667271&spn=0.029667,0.058365&z=14&iwloc=A&om=1) I'm sure you have your own grocery you go to, but I'm trying to get a job there in the Meat section. If that works out maybe you can pop in and say "hi".

Off Topic: It must have closed down. :( I went there a lot before the 24 Hour one opened. And the day Geneva closed was a sad one.
On Topic: Did they officially stop searching?

Wasn't there a second collapse during a rescue again?
