Biker fails to notice missing leg

Tue Aug 14, 9:53 AM ET

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese biker failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier, and rode on for more than a mile, leaving a friend to pick up the missing limb.

The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, on Monday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.

He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.

The man and his leg were taken to a hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.

How do you not notice your leg messing below the knee? o_O

Yeah, I'd think I would notice if my leg had suddenly come off. Maybe he was just enjoying the bike ride, or was in such a hurry... *shurgs*

Looks like life was having a 50% off sale because all it cost him was a leg.

I saw this article and nearly posted a link to it. My first thought was that the guy should be the new spokesman for the motorcycle line he was riding.

"Try the new EX series from Honda, for a ride so smooth that you won't even notice your own limbs missing... and I ought'a know." (thumbs up)

Swell, that's an "Epic Fail" if I ever saw one.

This must be a testament to the toughness of the Salaryman. You don't mess with a guy who doesn't even notice a missing limb.

hahahah! i saw this on my motorcycle forum earlier.. crazy huh, but it just sounds off, the situation just doesn't add up so much, on a motorcycle you use both feet (shift on the left, brake on the right) and the majority of riders hardly touch their front brakes (which is rather unfortunate). I dunno, i just can't see an impact strong enough with a barrier to take your leg but still allow you to continue riding.. i guess it could happen, but what're the odds...!

Wow, I'm sorry, but the simplicity of your reply to the OP (which is very warranted, I believe), just made my morning.

This kind of situation lends itself to easy one-liners:

Well, he's on the last leg of his journey...

Just think how much he'll save in footwear - his socks will last twice as long!

There's this girl I'd like to introduce him to; her name is Peg.

I know people are supposed to shrink with age, but he's a full foot shorter than the last time I saw him!

That last one, by the way, was said to my grandmother just after she had her leg amputated. She laughed. I have a sick family.

Very likely. Well there always something I heard about amputees still feeling like they still have their missing limb....

"FAILS to NOTICE MISSING LEG"

I just imagined it like, when you cut your finger or something, and never notice until you actually SEE the cut. Thats happened to me countless times.

A cut is one thing, but a whole leg? For you not to notice it would have to be a big paper cut.

You didn't state this post in the form of a Chick Tract photoshop. You're doing it wrong!

Anyway, at least this biker isn't like that creepy perv on Jerry Springer who cut his own legs off.

Nice. I missed these.

You do have a sick family. If I'd just gotten my leg amputated and someone cracked that one on me, I'd give em' a WINDSCAR! (deadly version).

What.

Explain.

Some people have a certain tendency to not feel normal unless they're limbs are gone. Sometimes it's a dangerous fetish, other times, just a wacked out mental state of well-being issue.
Why Crossbone is watching Springer in the first place is an entirely different matter (Nevermind who that particular guy was.)

Ohhhhhh, that's... easily the craziest thing I've heard this month.

Actually, this isn't really that far-fetched. There are a lot of situations where someone has has lost a limb and felt like it was still there. I've seen and researched plenty of scenarios involving loss of a body part and the victim felt as if the missing finger/foot/ect. was still attached to his body.

But that's usually in the sort of situation where ... 'you wake up in the middle of the night with a pain in your left leg, which was amputated years before'

That would be called "Phantom Pain", I believe. It's the sensation of still having the lost limb, which can persist for years. The reasons for this are entirely based in how the brain is wired, so it can be difficult to get rid of it.

I wasn't refering to phantom limb syndrome, btw. I was to both "apotemnophilia" (the fetish), and people who just plain didn't feel normal unless they only had stubs.

I find it a bit hard to believe this.... wouldn't he notice he shifted his weight to one side and noticed he wasn't holding out his foot but rather a bloody stump?
