Ocean Waves is my favourite, it's also the most obscure since it hasn't been released in the US.

Spirited Away. In general Ghibli stuff doesn't appeal to me, but Spirited Away was the most engaging of all the ones I've seen.

Nausicaa is my favourite.
In fact, it might be all-time favourite anime film. I have the R2 DVD from Japan, it comes in a nice cloth cover case, and has English subtitles. ^_^
I also really liked Howl's Moving Castle. Heroic grannies FTW!
I'm not too bothered about the others. There's too much emphasis on "befriend strange things! They're actually friendly" and it grates on me. It's the same message over and over and it's just tiresome. All my friends are already strange things! You don't need to tell me yet again! -_-;
The worst Ghibli film was the one about a boring woman and her boring life, so boring that one of the highlights of her life was that she once ate a pineapple with her family. The film is about her realising that her life so far has been really boring. I don't remember its name.
I haven't seen Graveyard Of The Fireflies yet, it sounds very good but difficult.

My Neighbor Totoro. Mei and Satsuki's relationship is so much like my childhood relationship with my older sister. It's very nostalgic.
For the most part, I pretty much like all of the Ghibli films I've seen, but my 2nd favourite is probably The Cat Returns. That Baron is one darn sexy cat.

Princess Mononoke-saw it in the theater and was hooked completely on Studio Ghilbi.

I've never watched a Ghibli movie I didn't like (save for Graveyard of the Fieflies, of which I'm not even commenting on), but Mononoke Hime stands out for me. Spirited Away, visually, is the most appealing to me. It's going to age really well.

My favorite Ghibli movie is also Ocean Waves (aka I Can Hear The Sea) which wasn't by Miyazaki. It was a project to show the newer animators how to make a great movie at low-cost, yet they went over budget anyways. XD
Other than that one, I adore Howl's Moving Castle.

Of all the Studio Ghibli movies I have seen...Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite. I've absolutely adored the rest that I've seen but...Howl's Moving Castle just tops them all in my book.

I'm surprised to see Umi ga Kikoeru (Ocean Waves) get mentioned as their favorite. I personally find it very difficult to choose one Ghibli favorite since I do like all of them - yes, even Omoide Poroporo (the pineapple one ^^; ) and Yamada-kun. I am really torn between Umi ga Kikoeru, Sen to Chihiro, Nausicaa, Laputa, and Totoro. I absolutely cannot pick just one. ><;;

My favorite Ghibili film as well as favorite anime film of all time is Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke!! From its spectacular animation to its incredible storylike with what it tries to imply about the spirits of nature trying to clensing itself from the pollutiion people have done to it. It was so memorable, and I thought it was one of the greatest anime films ever produced in the industry. I also liked Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away too!! I look forward to seeing Kiki's Delivery Service one of these days.

I love Princess Mononoke. It's a great film, and the only time I've seen an anime in a movie theater. The animation is fantastic and I like the story.
I have watched other Miyazaki films but don't really care for them, I don't like the simplistic facial designs, and find a lot of them.. boring. Kiki's Delivery Service reminded me of my childhood when I was stuck in church, bored to death and praying for it to end. (And I had heard such great things about it too.)

I've seen:
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Castle in the Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Howl's Moving Castle
The Cat Returns
Whisper of the Heart
Of those, my favorite was Whisper of the Heart, but it was the last one I've seen, so I might be biased a little bit. I thought Whisper of the Heart was the most down to earth and very relatable Miyazaki film I've seen.
I also own Nausicaa and Totoro but I haven't seen them yet.

I thought Whisper of the Heart was the most down to earth and very relatable Miyazaki film I've seen. You really need to watch Ocean Waves then since it's shares those very qualites you described. It's available with English subtitles on R2 and R3 dvds from most import outlets like Yesasia and CD Japan etc.

This is such a hard choice. I really liked Whisper of the Heart, but Spirited Away and Nausicaa are really good as well. Can't leave out Totoro. Really, I think the only Ghibli film thats not my favorite was Pom Poko. It wasn't a bad film, just weird. And Howls Moving Castle was just ok for me.

Mononoke Hime is my favorite Ghibli movie.
I had seen Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi first, and when i saw Mononoke i thought "this eats Spirited Away for breakfast" it was ten time better than an already great movie. I since have seen all the Ghibli movies except only yesterday.

when i saw Mononoke i thought "this eats Spirited Away for breakfast" it was ten time better than an already great movie.
I thought Princess Mononoke was 100 times better than Spirited Away. The latter was good, but I found it forgettable. The former touched on the humans in the context of other biota issue which I was interested in anyway. And I liked the way it showed several sides to the issue.
Favourite Ghibli movie? Toss up between Laputa, Grave of the Fireflies and Mononoke. Laputa slowly grew on me as I realised it shows some pretty deep ideas in a very lucid way.

I actually don't care for Mononoke Hime as much as many other Ghibli movies. Its a fantastic film, but there's parts I don't care for.
My favourite is probably Laputa. It may not have quite the same magical element as Spirited Away, but something about it really captured me. I agree with the description from the poster above. I love all the ones that I've seen, though there are a couple I still need. I personally thought that Pom Poko was an amazing film, but not as sophisticated as many of the others. It had a unique charm to it, though.

spirited away was the first I saw , I loved it due to it's different nature and 'what the' factor
next to that would have to be my neighbour totoro, it has a catchy tune and THE CAT BUS!
next in line i'd say princess mononoke for the simple fact there is a wolf involved

Princess Mononoke was the first anime dvd that i ever purchased. being a novice anime fan, the type of ending in it confused me and left me "what the f*ck?" because i was used to american endings. Ashitaka kicked some a$$.
but Nausicaa is kicka** too. in the anime she went ballistic, but in the manga shes a little more agressive....now only if i can find volume 6. cause im not skipping. and the manga is sooooooo different from the anime.

I would have to say Spirited Away, but I have watched a fair amount of studio Ghibli films so I will go a step further and list my top 5.
1. Spirited Away (Wonderful music scores Joe Hisaishi pulls out all the stops in this classic, with a story anyone could love)
2. Princess Mononoke (All around classic)
3. Cat Returns (short but a good one for the whole family if you have young ones)
4. My Neighbor The Yamada's (over the top crazy)
5. Grave of the Fireflies (very sad movie)

I've only ever watched Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro. I enjoyed Spirited Away the most, but liked Princess Mononoke's story better, so I'm sticking with the princess.
Howl's just left me going "WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAAT?!" at the end, it had scenes which had potential to be something amazing, but then just went KAPHUT, what crap.

I would have to say Naussica for Ghibli, but for Miyazaki it would be the Future Boy:Conan series. It's basically a template for all of his anime, and has the best story.

This is a tough question, however I have to say that Spirited Away is my favourite. It was the first Ghibli film I saw, and one of the first anime I ever watched. I've since watched many more Ghibli films, but Spirited Away is still my favourite.
The Cat Returns and Nausicaa are close runners-up, though!

Nausicaa is always at the top of my Ghibli list as number one. However, ever since I discovered Miyazaki and Ghibli many years ago I couldn't help but search out as many films by Miyazaki, Takahata, and Studio Ghibli that I could find, and I must say that I find it truely impossible to say one film is really a favorite over the other. I very much liked Howl's Moving Castle, Laputa/Castle in the Sky, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Whisper of the Heart, Spirited Away -- and a lot of other Ghibli films.
The very first Miyazaki film (but not a Ghibli film) that I ever saw was Lupin III - the Castle of Cagliostro, and that film totally blew me away. Then there were other films by Takahata/Miyazaki like Famous Detective Holmes (Sherlock Hound), Future Boy Conan, Panda Ko Panda, Marcos Search for his Mother, Heidi, The Adventure of Hols: Prince of the Sun, and others I may have forgotten that I liked so very much. I've enjoyed a lot of what has come out of the productions of Takahata, Miyazaki and their staff when I've managed to find any of their films.

I just saw Only Yesterday, it took a lot of work to dig up an old VHS copy, it's just uncommon. anyway it was one of the only Ghibli films I hadn't seen. It was okay, nothing like Howl's or Totoro. It's slow with a lot of character depth, what i didn't like was the voices or the inflection or something, they seem superficial compared to other seiyuu. anybody have input about this movie or other Ghibli films they might not have like?

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
The first experience was a quick glimpse of the fire creature unleashing its attack on the Ohmu and the subsequent destruction at my buddy's house back in the mid 80's. After that, I got a VHS copy from him, but it was all in Japanese and was a copy(x3)...very bad picture. Then I found (ducking for cover from Blue Thunder) a copy of New World's "Warriors of the Wind" on VHS and rented it until it died, then found a copy at Toys R Us. That's all we had...and we were happy to have it (dad impression). Then Disney released it a few years ago, complete with the deleted scenes and environmental storyline intact...much rejoicing. Patrick Stewart was a plus as well. Now, I've been lucky enough to collect several books, music, manga and models of the series. It'll always be my favorite...probably due to nostalgia most likely.

Nausicaa was my fave, saw it in the mid80's at a San Diego film festival. Upon seeing it years later with english subs (what I watched before had Chinese subs; my cousin went cause he was studying Chinese) I realized that the foxsquirrel had inspired Peekachu (lul). The foxsquirrel is actually my favorite Ghibli character. Howl's is also pretty good, but the Floating Castle was amazing, a close second to Nausicaa.

It's a competition between Whisper of the Heart and Kiki's Delivery Service.
Kiki is my first Ghibli movie and is one of the first anime I ever watched. So it has the nostalgia factor. Plus, I LOVE Jiji. I also admired Kiki a lot for being so independent and going out on her own, and I really wanted to be like that (I hope I'm like that now, but I still occassionally draw inspiration from her).
Whisper came at a time though when the message really spoke to me. I could really relate and empathize with Shizuku, and seeing her overcome her hurdles gave me the hope and determination I could overcome mine. So I fell for the movie hard. I also loved how realistic and down-to-earth it was.

Howls Moving Castle and Mononoke tied. I liked Mononoke's story more, but Howl's was so vibrant and crisp on the animation and the colors. Almost blew out my tv set.
Encore has been playing these movies at all halfazzed hours of the week. Ponyo was on last night, from 4am to about 6am, and I watched the first 30 minutes but quit because I would feel it after waking up on only 6 hours sleep.
