Thought I'd make this so me and Corncopp(and others) could have our own thread for comic books.

And to kick things off:

Sinestro Corps > comic book industry. Bet it.

I love comics, I'm really excited about attending fleamarkets regularly now, because that means I can find some great deals, my entire collection, although small, cost me 12 dollars in total.

I used to read the Beano and the Dandy from the early-80s to early-90s. My parents threw out all my comics when we moved house, only to find out that they could have sold the collection for some good money.

I have a large collection of old comic annuals; the Beano, Dandy, Beezer, Cor, Topper, Whizzer and Chips etc etc etc. From around the 1960s onwards. All good UK comedy for kids, and a lot from before political correctness was invented.

The quality of British comics has really plummeted in recent years, though, so nowadays I read Japanese comics instead.

Oh yeah, I enjoyed the compilations books I had of Spiderman and of Dr Strange, too. ^_^

The only comics that I've read and liked are: V for Vendetta, Fables, and The Sandman comics. Those three rock my socks. The art sucked for V for Vendetta but I really liked the story so I was able to ignore that fact. Fables is well drawn and of course the story is awesome. As for The Sandman...there is no end to my praise for that series.

You know, after reading Civil War, Annihilation, and seeing Riderīs burnt corpse in Nova #4, the New Warriors are officially the saddest tale ever told about superhero kids.

Im not a real fan of what Marvel is doing these days. This is why i basically go to DC now, there`s a reason why there are non stop events now.Since the reader base are people in their 20/30`s..events are done to force people who do buy comics..to buy more.

Weekly COLOR comics. The entire industry, here and in the east, can learn something from them.

I don't read DC much, if at all, but sometimes I'll pick up a Batman comic and thumb through. Good stuff (their crossovers are pretty enjoyable too).

Mostly I'm a Marvel fan, but the series I currently read/have enjoyed very much in the past are:
Various Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, etc comics
The Sandman
V For Vendetta (thought the second half was shoddy compared to the first
Watchmen (!)

I got the idea of Capīs retcon back to life from Civil War: The Return.

2. Retrieve his frozen body and bring it to the present.
3. ???
4. BAD PROFIT.

I've read a lot of Frank Miller and Alan Moore... apart from that... not too hot on the traditional superhero comics. Other recent reads have been the "Preacher" series, as well as the "Y: The Last Man" and the "The Walking Dead" series, all of which I reccomend heartily.

I used to really love Archie but now I can't stand it. I still like their Sonic comics though.

I used to buy the Sonic Comics. I stopped at issue 50 though. Looking at it now, it's gotten pretty ridiculous. Something about super shadow and super tails and basically everyone with a chaos emerald going super...it seems to have gotten super-stupid. Though there was this one comic I was reading in the store that had Robotnik vs. Sonic. And Robotnik saying he let the freedom fighters survive because he was bored ruling mobius. That was kind of interesting, but on the whole, it seems to have gone overboard.

If anyone wants to read some great Batman stories look into.

Batman: The Killing Joke

Batman: Long Halloween

Batman: Year One/dark knight returns

or if you can find the one shots where batman teams up with Bullock. I also reccomend those.

The only real DC title i pay attention to is Superman/Batman and the occasional storyline from some of the other titles.

As for Marvel I really just stick to the Ultimate Universe. Ive lost track of the regular marvel universe xcept for New Avengers, but im trying to get into the whole Civil War storyline.

as for dark horse ive recently gotten into Star Wars Legacy.

thanks to my library ive also been able to read past storylines such as The Long Halloween.

The latest World War Hulk stuff has been too strong. Someone on another forum made mention of this tying in with Future Imperfect where Hulk becomes Maestro. Even though the outcome won't be the same, it still kinda makes sense.

Yeah, Invincible is good stuff. Unfortunately, my local comic store is sold out of vol.7 at the moment.

Catching up on some stuff was reading some Planet Hulk and Civil War and really got me back into comics. Going to go back in read some Batman stuff to get ready for the movie. Just started WWH and Sinestro Corps. (Not touching any of the Crisis Stuff.) I also have heard good stuff about Captain America.

All the cross over stuff is slowly getting confusing (doesn't help I'm reading three at once) though so is there any stand alone series currently running that you guys would recommend? I was thinking about Captain America, especially after everything that happened in Civil War, and in issue 25 (only one I've read) but if anyone else knows of some good stuff just let me know.

After reading Watchmen & Dark Knight Returns(godly pieces of work) in the beginning of the year something inside me clicked again, its been about a good decade since I was last deep into comics.
Just recentley finished up Civil War; liked bits and pieces of it thought Cap, Spidey and Wolverine really shined. A little disapointed and pissed in the resolution but all in all it did spark interest in other series. Though I wasn't a huge fan of the pro reg crowd I do want to check out Avengers: The Initiative.
I've also managed to collect Cap, Black Panther, Cable/Deadpool, Moon Knight, Spidey just name a few ^_^ Currently in the middle of Planet Hulk, breezing through it fast so I can get to WWH. Still waiting for some new Runaways and Young Avengers material. Needless to say I have alot of reading to catch up on.
Anyway just thought I'd rave about my revamped passion for comics.

Out of the few I've read and can recall, my favorite was Masters of Doom about the Doom/iD Software guys, John Carmack and John Romero.

I've been trying to decide what to read next.. maybe one of the George Lucas autobiographies? Either Droidmaker or John Baxter's George Lucas. Although the first isn't quite about Lucas/Star Wars whereas the latter has gotten mixed reviews.

Wow I'm hella late for this, I tend to lean more towards DC more then Marvel these days..but here are some great titles.

Justice Society of America- real old school comics it caters to the Golden Age and some good classic heroes.

Batman R.I.P..I don't know how to explain this one but Morrison is doing a rather odd job on this one.. I think you should wait until the TPB comes out so you can read all of it together.

Green Lantern Corps-Great time to jump on now with the upcoming Black Lantern tie-in..and plus you get to see the dreaded Red Lanterns( and others) come into the fight.

thats jus a few...

and to the guy that mentioned Watchemn..yes thats a great read.

^No not at all cause the book gives such a rich story/characters thats so ridiculously deep in detail you cant really fathom them recreating the feelings you got on screen, books naturally give off that tingly feeling anyway which is why often times the books end up being better.

But I feel you I'm trying to keep myself at arms length as well until then, I do wanna give it a chance.

Symbols can mean anything. A red, white, and blue flag with a number of stars on it happens to mean "United States of America", but to someone who theoretically has never heard of the US, it would mean nothing but be a pretty flag.

That said, I don't recall ever hearing it was supposed to be anything specific. I usually note the Comedian's Joker-like approach to things (it really reminds me of The Killing Joke...big surprise) as well as the concept of absolutely horrid or corrupt society and/or people buried under a facade of joy and happiness.

But that's just me. It's also been a while since I read all of Watchmen last, probably about a year or two.

So they just use the smiley with the blood stain for no reason at all?

No. It's an ambiguous motif that defines the Watchmen world. One of its meanings is "tainted innocence." There are others, but that's one I got from back in my comic analyzing college class several years ago.

Alan Moore? Yeah. He's pretty well known in comics, just google him and you'll probably find a few things.

V For Vendetta and The Killing Joke (a Batman comic) come to mind. I preferred the V movie, myself, but that's just because I felt the second half of the comic was a little disjointed.

It's a general studies course. If you look around for colleges, just maybe you can get lucky and find it available. I personally enjoyed it since all we did was discuss the relevance of comics in society, study the history of comics and write essays about all the symbolic meanings of what was going on in the comic panels.

Alan Moore is pretty much a legend in the graphic novel realm. He created the John Constantine character from the Hellblazer series, so if you want, check it out. It's actually a good series. As for writing? Yeah, V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell and Promethea are essential reads.

Now that's Marvel Adventure's job.
