Students Invent Powdered Alcoholic Drink Mix (http://news.aol.com/topnews/articles/_a/students-invent-powdered-alcoholic-drink/n20070606090809990007)
Reuters
AMSTERDAM (June 6) - Dutch students have invented powdered alcohol which they say can be sold legally to minors.

The latest innovation in inebriation, called Booz2Go, is available in 20-gramme packets that cost 1-1.5 euros, or $1.35-$2.

Top it up with water and you have a bubbly, lime-colored and -flavored drink with just 3 percent alcohol content.

"We are aiming for the youth market. They are really more into it because you can compare it with Bacardi-mixed drinks," 20-year-old Harm van Elderen told Reuters.

Van Elderen and four classmates at Helicon Vocational Institute, about an hour's drive from Amsterdam, came up with the idea as part of their final-year project.

"Because the alcohol is not in liquid form, we can sell it to people below 16," said project member Martyn van Nierop.

The legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking is 16 in the Netherlands.

The students said companies interested in making the product commercially could avoid taxes because the alcohol was in powder form. A number of companies are interested, they said.

They will probably just change the laws. I mean cause it just starts in powdered form, but once you add water...it is liquid form, right? Plus you are still a minor drinking.
Maybe their laws over there are realy different or something, cause I am not getting this.

Wow. I knew the Netherlands weren't strict, but come on. Besides, wouldn't that stuff taste nasty anyway?

I don't think it's illegal to drink alcohol or even to possess it below the legal age, it's just illegal for anyone to sell it to you. As for this alco-powder, I almost posted something about this yesterday, because I saw it in the newspaper. I think these students must be out of their minds if they think they will be allowed to sell it to children.

Most of the fruity "alco-pops" marketed at younger drinkers taste foul. I don't mind Smirnoff Ice, a vodka and bitter lemon drink, but other than that I'm an old-fashioned drinker. I like whisky, vodka, beer or cider. I don't drink a lot anyway.

I don't drink at all (which is good considering I'm underage), but nonetheless, I honestly can't fathom why/how anyone would willingly consume alcohol.

Do they seriously think that the Dutch government is going to read this article where they brag about evading taxes and laws, and just say "Awwww, shucks, you got us there, Helicon Vocational Institute students! We'll just have to watch in dismay as you sell this to alcohol companies to sell booze to kids and dodge taxes! We certainly won't revise our laws to cover your product or anything! Gosh, you sure are criminal masterminds!"

Hahaha, I bet all the scientists working on this breakthrough are undergraduate university students between the ages of 19 and 21. And they'd better make all their money on this *quick* before the law changes and taxation comes in...

...they need to cross this stuff with popping candy, too. And forget about mixing it with water directly. Exploding alcopops on your tongue; yeah, that'll catch on massively!

What can I tell you? All the cool kids were doin' it. In all seriousness though, people drink alcohol for a variety of reasons. Sometimes to unwind after a stressfull day, sometimes because in a social situation everyone else is drinking as well, and sometimes because it helps to lower their inhibitions. In general, most people like the way it makes them feel, and like the taste as well. I personally drink a lot less than is normal for the society in which I live.

I don't drink but girls are more vulnerable after they go out drinking.... needless to say this is a good invention.

What's funny is that's the biggest reason why I dislike alcohol.

There are many reasons why someone would drink. Since I don't want to get too feisty, I'll just do this: To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

Assuming the powder is some sugar with the alcohol absorbed into it?

Or possibly it is produced by the same process as freeze-dried coffee?

Well the selling of Vodka Chocolates (http://standardnetworking.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=11&products_id=30) to minors is allowed, so I wouldn't see how this would be much different.

The vodka in the chocolates is 80 proof too..40% alcohol...compared to the 3% of this powder.

Classy. I guess that works just even better for ol' Bernard's plan to catch a buzz at the movies... could get kinda expensive though, especially for those with a high tolerance for the fire-water. I'm assuming that the crystaline layer actually does keep the alcohol in these candies.

Now you don't have to wait till college to become an alcoholic! Show all your middle school friends who's the coolest!

Kids already do that anyway. This just saves 'em the trouble of obtaining fake ID.

I didn't drink until I hit college. I seemed to have a better head on my shoulders when I was an adolescent. I'm not sure how I feel about them trying to target things like this to kids, since the last thing we need is drunk kids acting a 'dang fool' and hurting themselves at others. The problems this will cause for schools and such in the long run are pretty major.

No comment. THAT badly do you crave and need alcohol? My goodness.

A friend of mine did sneak some Goldschlager in a small bottle to a banquet once. And I could take one of my small pocket-size wine bottles to places...but I have not. As much as I love wine, I do not need to sneak it or drink it so often.
