Bit surprised there hasn't been a thread posted about this yet as I think the movie would appeal to anime fans, kind of like something Miyazaki would do, but not made for children (much darker).

If you haven't seen it, there are a few things to be aware of:
1. The audio is in spanish with subtitles.
2. The fantasy elements really aren't the focus of the story. It
takes place during the Spanish Civil War in 1944.
3. Movie is rated R for profanity and graphic violence.

One thing I found interesting was that apparantly a lot of people have complained about the dialogue not being in english and having to read the subtitles. I just think it's sad that something so minor can turn people off what I consider one of the best movies in a long time.

I think there was a thread back when it was released in theatres. I am not surprised that people complain about subtitles. This is the country were people wanted to see the first 4 Henry movies after seeing Henry V.

Believe me, there have been like 2 threads on it already I think. Maybe one was deleted. I saw it in theatres, I liked it.

when the maid/cook gutted the captain like a fish!!! AND then eh stitched it up in a mirror.

That was awesome. Also the oversized frog was cool.

oh yea, good story and ending too.

It had some good effects and stuff, but I think the ending soured the movie for me. It was just so tacked on to try and make the mood at the end better.

One of the best movies I've ever seen. Definitely in my top 10.

What was everyone's opinion on whether or not the fairytale aspect was real?

Many believe it was all in her imagination, a form of escape from her horrible life.

Its also been said that it was created in a way that it was left up to the viewer to decide but Guillermo del Toro left hints at the idea that he favors it being real (the flower, the wall separating, and Ofelia being able to get out of her locked room and into the captains unnoticed.
