Warner purrs for Thundercats
'80s animated series heading to bigscreen

By MARC GRASER

It's Thundercats, ho! at Warner Bros.

Studio has optioned a script by tyro scribe Paul Sopocy to turn the popular 1980s animated series and toy line into a CGI-animated feature.

Warner-based Paula Weinstein will produce through her Spring Creek Prods. banner, along with **** Robertson and Lew Korman.

Property revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it's destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.

Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.

Project was brought to Warner by Palek Patel, VP at Spring Creek. Dan Lin is overseeing the pic for Warners.

The Thundercats franchise began in 1983 and spawned several animated series, with the most recent airing on Cartoon Network, a toy line produced by LJN and comicbooks published by Marvel and DC imprints. Warner Bros. has owned the rights to the animated series since acquiring Telepictures Corp. in 1989.

Studio's recently been bitten by the nostalgia bug, pacting with Joel Silver to produce a live-action "He-Man" movie, based on the toy and cartoon franchise, as well as a feature based on the DC comicbook "Teen Titans," a junior Justice League.

Weinstein most recently produced Warners' "Blood Diamond," and with HBO Films is prepping "Recount," based on the 2000 presidential election, with Sydney Pollack set to direct.

"Thundercats" is Sopocy's first studio script sale as a screenwriter. He's currently senior writer, print advertising, at Fox Broadcasting Co., and has previously penned short films including "Staring at the Sun," which was screened at the Sundance film fest in 2005.

I am prepared to give this one a chance, though. Since it is based on one of the best cartoons of my youth. In general, I'll agree with you, but I'm going to allow myself some hope in this case.

They did a decent enough job with Ninja Turtles. At least it's CGI and not live action.

Live Action He-man was done once already, why do it again? Perhaps we'll see a return of Dolph Lundgren as the part of our hero? Tell ya what though, if they make Frank Langella part of any of what was described in the article, I'm in.

Frank Langella was the best skeletor ever.

No...Not Thunder cats. They are the last of the shows they haven’t raped.
Why cant the screw up Captain Planet, he deserves it. Teaching me that I can change the world by cutting up six pack holders? Hell no. But maybe they might do a good job on the Thunder cats. Stranger things have happened.

I'll go see it, if only to see Mumm-Ra kick all kinds of butt. Because he undoubtedly will (if they downplay him, that'd be really lame). Also, hearing the exclamation "Thundercats, HO!" will be rather amusing here, considering that the majority of people in my area who'll be seeing it are likely very old or too young to have seen the show. :P

Anyway, how the hell do you cast Lion-O? Who is even worthy of wearing the leotard?

Alan Cummings as Snarf. Bet it.

For me it has to be David Hasslehoff, otherwise I'm just not paying to see this movie. Who else has the sheer over-abundance of masculinity and sheer raw power to pull off such a role? Maybe Chuck Norris, but it's really not his kind of a role. I'm hoping to see him cast as Tygra.

The Hoff as Lion-O? Man, this movie would be twice as good if that were to happen.

What would be even better is if a timewarp were to bring the 80s Hoff to the present to play Lion-O. That would be far too awesome to be expressed in your primitive Human language. In fact it would be worth inventing a time machine just to make that happen. He even has the hair for it, kind of. Just needs to dye it. Compare these images:

I'm waiting for the live-action Jonny Quest. They've already done Scooby Doo, so it's only a matter of time before we drive off that retro kitch abyss...

I'd much rather see The Herculoids, anyway...

When will hollywood stop with the remakes! There has yet to be ONE good remake, ever.

I would call the first Scooby Doo movie a good remake. Me, as a Scooby fan since I was around 8, it was enjoyable movie. It had capture the mood of the show (surprising that Matthew Lillard did an impressive Shaggy, down to the voice) and it had Scrappy Doo as the villian, which wins alone with me since I HATED that b***h like many Scooby fans.

I say it's a 70/30 chance that a Live Action ThunderCats will fail/win. It REALLY depends on the director, really. :'D I'm just waiting on the impending failure of Transformers since Micheal Bay is the director. Seriously, when will major studio STOP hiring this guy?

I'm sure all of you remember the time that I stated the fact that Haselhoff was born to play the role of Lion-O. I know everyone has such short attention spans these days, but in case you need to refresh your memory, and review the picture evidence I provided, you need only refer to the first page of this thread.

I'm sure most of you were wondering, as was I, exactly how Hasselhoff would look, once the makeup team have fully transformed him into the mighty warrior who wields the Sword of Omens.

Thanks to the kindness and skills of Magami no ER, we need wonder no more. Behold, I give you... Lion-O Haselhoff!

That sucks.
Not that badly. It wasn't worth spending any more time on a stupid gag image. It has demonstrated the point that only one actor, at one time, was ever perfect for this role.

Knight Rider ran from 1982 to 1986. Thundercats started in 1985. Coincidence? I think not. The mighty feline warrior was based on Haselhoff right from the start.

Why lie.

I'd pay to see a movie version of the episode where Mumm-Ra disguised himself as King Arthur to trick the Lady of the Lake into giving him Excalibur, whereupon he kicks Thundercat butt from here to Sunday. Too much out-loud gloating about his devious ruse brings out Merlin to get Medieval on his rag-wrapped arse.

I wonder what raven-haired actress would play Princess Ariel from Thundarr?
("Lords of Light! The SunSword, snuffed out like a candle!")

I see a lotta CG in any Herculoids future.

But please.... no Super Friends with Zan and Jana.

To make this movie perfect, we're going to need a time machine, or possibly cloning technology. If we can recreate the perfect Hasselhoff, we can create the perfect Lion-O. This movie is just too important to do otherwise. All the efforts of science must go towards this end right now.

I'd love nothing more than to see a live-action Johnny Quest.
My fears of a Live Action Jonny Quest are based on two factors:

1) Political correctness. The orginal wasn't very politically correct, what with Haji being almost a Fez-esque mascot and all. I fear that a remake would try to water down that aspect of the show, plus support the whole Race/Dr. Quest slash ambiguity, etc. That would suck. I want the real deal, not the series as it would likely be written to make everyone happy today.

Unfortunately, I fear that the only people who truly understand Jonny Quest are currently writing scripts for the The Venture Brothers.

2) The Theme Song. I'd absolutely love to hear full orchestration on the original Jonny Quest theme, but I know that most composers have an almost Wendee-Lee-esque inclination to put their own 'spin' on a creation they don't understand. For example, look at the Mission Impossible movies, which changed the classic 5/4 theme to a 4/4 beat. This was unforgiveable. I shudder to think how badly they'd butcher the best theme song in animation.

The one remix I ever liked was in the Lost In Space movie. You can hear the original theme underpinning the end credits. The creators of that film (and the theme) understood the subject matter, I felt.

Would you rather see a movie based on the events of the original Jonny Quest storyline or the Real Adventures Of Jonny Quest?

Agreed, but it's close one between The Adventures of TinTin and Jonny Quest for best theme song in animation.

ive only seen Magnum P.I. once, but the one thing i love about it is that its the show that got America's attention to Ferraris:w00t:.....cant help it, im a car fanatic.

one thing that i WOULD be worried about is if someone tried to make a live action version of Nausicaa. thankfully this is Miyazaki we're talking about, and he wouldnt allow that. if he did, the moment id find out id have a mental breakdown.

are there any live action CLAMP movies for their series? Hollywood might try to strike a deal with them, but from what i understand theyre also very protective.
