View Full Version : apartment trouble

I am so mad.
So, when we moved into this apartment, I was told we could have a caged animal. I even specifically asked if I could have a rabbit, which was answered with a YES.
Now I saw some bunnies up for adoption, and I wanted to get one. BBUUUUZZZ.
Now they are saying I can not have any caged animal, only a cat. Which doesn't make sense, cause cage animals are 100x cleaner than a mangy cat.
They are even saying it is ILLEGAL to have rabbits and guinea pigs as pets in city limits. Apparently they didnt realize I have a roommate (my brother) who is a criminal justice major, and he looked at the law, and it said nothing of the sort.

I am talking to the manager that we signed the lease with, and upper people to try to get that changed.
I want my ****ing rabbit >=(

Get an aquarium instead. Bunnies are for eating and coats not pets.

Well, we agreed that if we even discover that the rabbit has say, chewed on a wire, and died. We will fry it up. :P

Oh boy, I have so many things to say about this...

You are apparently in a similar boat as me right now, since I just went ahead and leased my first apartment as well. Apartment landlords/owners/bastards lie to you all of the time, don't believe ANYTHING they tell you. Ever. Never. Don't be stupid like me *sigh*.

Get everything in writing because otherwise what they 'tell you' means nothing. If it is in writing, then it can stand up in court/otherwise. My goodness, if you heard the sort of crap I just went through because I wasn't smart enough to realize this on my own before committing to a lease--you'd be shocked and/or horrified. Never believe what they tell you; always get it in writing with signatures, dates, the works.

And I hope for your sake you documented EVERY LITTLE THING as thoroughly as possible when moving in--all damages, cracks, dents, dings, stains, everything. Because THAT will come back to bite you in the *** I guarantee it.

Oh, I did, I did.

I have put some things into motion. I am trying my best to get the bunny in (they are for adoption, so they may go fast) and NOT pay the fascist pet 'deposit"

Rabbit pee also smells quite bad, it will be very difficult to disguise as while they can be litterbox trained they mostly go in the general area of the box.

Well, you may have to pay that deposit. I mean, come on--what is worse; paying ten dollars so that you can have your bunny (and I had three rabbits at one point and they are DAMN DIRTY BASTARDS, don't be fooled by their cute little bunny faces. Beneath that innocence lies death with big, nasty, pointy teeth...), or sneak the bunny in, get caught, and get evicted from the premises?

Without bunny or without home? Hmmm...tough choice.....

we were also thinking about getting a chinchilla, they're even cuter

Ten dollars??
More like $250!! Plus they want yo uto pay an extra $20 a month in rent. SIEG HIEL!
I find it odd they call it a deposit, as deposits are ALWAYS refundable.

Aparently you ahvent smelled my brother. The rabbit pee would be an IMPROVEMENT

deposits are refundable by law, the lease states it as a fee but every person in teh office states it is a deposit

They are cute, they have no control over their bowel movements and are high matenence and die easily. As an alternative you should help perpetuate the endangered American Chinchilla Rabbit (http://albc-usa.org/cpl/americanchinchilla.html).

Looks tasty. I wonder if being endangered makes things more tasty

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, sucks to be you. For my cat it is an extra ten dollars a month. No up-front deposit or whatnot. You got screwed.

Oh, and deposits are NOT always refundable. Depends on if you take good care of your apartment or not. If you leave a mess or damage, prepare to never see that deposit money again...and maybe even pay additional costs on top of it. Bunnies are gross little buggers, and they cause a lot of damage because they CHEW THINGS. I'd say that's $250 you'll never be seeing again....

The pet 'deposit" is non refundable. But to be a deposit, you need to be able to get it back if you meet certain conditions.

Plus I dont plan on letting it run loose much. When I do, I will have aclose eye on it.

A verbal contract is no less legal than a written contract. The only problem is that you say the he said x and he denies it. You are at something of an inpass there. have a roommate (my brother) who is a criminal justice major, and he looked at the law, and it said nothing of the sort.Start calling his bull**** and you may get somewhere.
I want my ****ing rabbit >=(I would too.Get an aquarium instead. Bunnies are for eating....and fish aren't?

^ I dont think they are ********ting, I think they are just ignorant of the law.
The laws basically says that you cant have rabbits, and certain other animals caged outside, within X amount of feet of a building without that owners consent.
So I should just need a manager to say "yes, you can have a rabbit" then I will be fine

EDIT: Aparently the apartment company lawyer has said that having rabbits is illegal. What a dumbass. I have friends that have rabbits, guinea pigs, and rats (pet rats) and they havent had any problems

Sounds like a livestock zoneing law, and most cities have them.

Your right. The laws talks about having them OUTSIDE. Not owning one rabbit as a pet.
I dont see how you can confuse them, unless the lawyer is a total idiot. I mean, dont they LEARN how to interpet laws in school?

Well, I just went back to the petstore. 2 of the 4 rabbits up for adoption are already gone! Hell, I might miss the chance >=( so all my effort will be in vain.

^ Eh, Rabbits will always come back 10 fold, as no one sees the use of spaying/neutering them as necessary as it is with dogs/cats....which is stupid considering their breeding potential.
I've had one for 10 years and still <3 him. 'Hoping your efforts to own one hold up, if you're in the right...

EDIT: I doubt there will be any left if I do get them to cave.
They are the kind I want to, little lop ones, in a cute color. But, nooooo it is 'illegal'

They're going against their word....they said you could have one back when you moved in the apartment, right? And now they say you can't? That's ridiculous...

If you don't get a bunny, I'd highly recommend one of the big lab rats. They're awesome pets. They're cleaner than rabbits and guinea pigs too.

That's hilarious!  The only apartment trouble I have is when we first moved in and little brats we're throwing dirty diapers onto the damn balcony.
