What do you think about Asian films? (waits for porno comments)
This weekend i watched 3 Asian films and they were all pretty good!

The Eye
The Eye 2
The Returner

I think the asians make horror films the best, they capture those moments that would terrify most in real life.
In The Eye theres this moment where the main women is in a lift and she senses something behind her, a old man (Ghost) is facing away from her and floating in the air and he slowly starts to turn around towards her.
Its not scary but its a creepy moment, just to imagine if you were in that position.

The Eye 2 was even better than the first one where they recaptured some of those moments from the first film but also added alot more onto it, and the story was better too.

The Returner was made in 2002 i think, it has a kind of Terminator story to it where somebody goes back in time to stop something that will eventually take over the world.
The special effects are decent for 2002!

Overall i enjoyed all 3 of these films others ive seen are all the Rings, Dark Water, and a few others

To be honest I thought The Eye was better than The Eye 2 =P

I really like The Entity, with is a kind of modern B-movie set in Korea. It's not legendary or anything, but I think it's a good watch.

Yeah The Eye was good and both had those kinda creepy moments, but i thought 2 had a better storyline than the first one!

The Entity?
I take it from the name its a horror, is it worth a buy?

Anything by Park Chan-Wook.
He directed Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympatht For Lady Vengeance.
Also known as the "Vengeance Trilogy"

Other good movies are Peep "TV" Show, In the Mood For Love, 2046, and The Emperor and the Assassin.

These movies aren't horror, but they are well worth watching (and it wouldn't hurt for you to take my word for it, because I am quite the film snob :p).

Also, keep an eye out for Korean movies, they are really setting the bar for innovative cinema.

I'm a big fan of Asian movies.

Some of my favorites:
Hero (Chinese)
House of Flying Daggers (Chinese)
Oldboy (Korean)
Shinobi ~Heart of Blade~ (Japanese)
Sex is Zero (Korean)
Kung Fu Hustle (Chinese)
Ringu (Japanese)
Azumi (Japanese)

I just bought Azumi 2 for $15 at a convention over the weekend. I don't expect too much out of it cause it looks like a semi-cheap sequel, but it has the same lead actress "Aya Ueto", so it should be good for some eye candy at least. :P

I just watched Curse of the Golden Flower over the weekend, starring Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li. It was a very beautiful movie, cinematography wise, but the story was a little slow for my tastes. I guess I expected the movie to have more action than it did.

I loved death note the live action 1&2 and house of flying daggers... and stuff like that.

Other than that, I've seen my fair share of Hindi movies. Monsoon wedding and American Desi being the bigger titles.

help jog my memory, I once saw a really good Indian movie about how the British unfairly taxed the Indians and it was settle with a game of cricket or rounders or something.

The title was Hindi for "tax" I think. It was really good. I recommend it to everyone (with subtitles of course).

I don't like the idea of lumping the entirety of Asia into one category like it's one contiguous culture, because it's not. Mainly because I don't like the idea of countries like the Phillippines (assuming they even HAVE a movie industry,) getting credit for things they have nothing to do with.

Besides, for example, Bollywood puts out more movies each year than Hollywood and pretty much the only people watching them are Indians.

Goyokin!!!!!

Goyokin is a great film, one of Gosha's best, Nakadai owns in that one.

Classic Chinese and Japanese films are my favorites. Shaw Brothers used to make some really good movies in their heyday. Too bad their lousy dubbed versions are all most people ever see. Japan used to reign supreme in the asian film community, now their are relegated to mostly shock cinema, its a sad fate.

I don't watch too many Asian films, putting anime aside. I do watch some live actions though. I've seen Zatoichi, Princess Blade, Seven Samurai, The JP versions of The Grudge and The Ring, the first live action for Death Note. Maybe it's just the movies I've seen, but from what I've seen America has way better special effects. Correct me if I'm wrong. I know movies aren't all about the visuals, but it feels tedious when things are so noticeable.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I also saw Killer Ichi

Well, I like Korean movies.

Musa
Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo (Or as it is in English, Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War)

And some more. As for live-action movies, I haven't seen any Japanese movies that interested me.

Yes, but you added that part later ;) I think I had already started my reply before you fixed it.

If you know movies aren't all about the visuals, why bother with the comparison at all? Special effects are nice, but today SFX have gotten way out of control, its gotten to the point where studios are relying on Effects to sell the movie rather than construct a complete film. They seem to think that if they pile enough glitter on a film people won't notice the lousy performance their lead is putting or how a story is complete rubbish. "Wow it looks fantastic, no one will ever know this is actually a real stinkburger! Excellent".

The Shaw Brothers make some really sweet stuff. I liked "Disciples of Death: Also known as Men from the Monastery," because the story was so thin it was as if I was watching two hours of kung fu!

Also love the Stephen Chow movies, God of Cookery, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, as well as the other few hundred movies I have by him that I have not watched yet. I think God of Cookery was his magnum opus, though.

Like the original poster I dug the eye (even though I never saw the eye 2), I'm planning to watch a Chinese horror film called the forest of death (sic) soon. I also have a large collection of Kung Fu movies I have not dove too deep into yet, but Curse of the Golden Flower looks epic.

I have more to say about Asian TV series, though. I watched some of Kamen Rider Den-O in Chinese Subtitles and it was the bees knees, in fact any KR is good, especially the classic series.

Gozu was a great movie too, for all the family.

I do agree in most cases. I can respect something for what it is without the visuals, it just annoys me when things are REALLY obvious and fake. Excluding older films, of course.

MrKoreanguy
June 5th, 2007, 08:51 PM
Well, instead of going to Wikipedia for a brief synopsis, I'll just explain them.

Musa is very similar to Last Samurai (although it came out before, I watched Last Samurai before). It's about an envoy from Korea that goes to China but ends up finding the Chinese princess and escorts her back to China. On their way, they get chased by Mongolians and there are some pretty intense action scenes. I don't wanna sound stupid, but I can't seem to remember any of the kingdoms are names from that period of time. But yeah, Zhang Ziyi is in it.

Taegukgi is a war film. It's based on the Korean War and it focuses on two brothers who have been conscripted into the army and yeah. That one's epic too.

My Sassy Girl is a romantic comedy, and it's actually pretty funny. Although I'm very pessimistic and hate romantic movies, I actually liked this one. It's based on a true story too... Sort of.

And the last one (although I haven't mentioned it yet) is Dasepo Girl. It's rather weird. I guess it's the Korean version of American Pie. It has transgenders and yeah...

Wow. I was expecting some people to tell me how Japanese culture is so much superior to the Korean culture, but I guess I underestimated a lot of people. Yeah. Japan learned a lot from Korea before they decided to accept Western ideals (which was a very good thing that China and Korea were stupid to reject).

But anyway, I just want the weeaboos to know that Japan copied a lot of things from China and Korea.

Brotherhood was a fantastic film. Haven't seen the others though.

I like Akira Kurosawa films, namely Yojimbo and Seven Samurai.

Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy is pretty decent (Oldboy being far and away the best of the three - Sympathy for Mr. Vengence was pretty bad if I'm honest).

Takeshi Miike has done some interesting stuff, if you're into some heinously violent scenes that is. Ichi the Killer is always going to get an honourable mention.

I can't be bothered to create a "Western Film Thread", so what are people's favourite films of all time?

Topping my list right now is The Departed. But it changes so reguarly.

What do you think about Asian films? (waits for porno comments)

Uhm, so it does really mean 'Asian' films are only Chinese-Korean-Japanese?

I don't like the idea of lumping the entirety of Asia into one category like it's one contiguous culture, because it's not. Mainly because I don't like the idea of countries like the Phillippines (assuming they even HAVE a movie industry,) getting credit for things they have nothing to do with.

Ehrm, mainstream movies in the Philippines are nothing but chick-flicks. So due to the lack of relevant material, discriminating movie-goers (like me) go for independent films, which are more artistic and more mature than any 'big-budgeted' Filipino film out there (cuz they pay the 'best' actors/actresses for a really big talent fee, also I think the local censorship board always rate indie films as restricted, I got a lot of trouble watching when I wasn't of legal age).

There're really good indie films in here, though I'll have to catch them on film festivals... :(

------------

There's a Bollywood movie I saw about call center agents, and I liked the way how it was portrayed (again forgot the title... :|) Kinda related to it a bit. I'm not really into 'Asian horror' or Chinese epic films. 'Slice of life' films are my cup of tea. So Close was a good movie though... :D

If it's a movie, then currently I like Kungfu Hustle. If it's TV series, then there are multiple series I enjoy watching them. Most of it are the TVB series back in the 80's. =P
