I have advanced tickets for tomorrows showing. Yay! I can't wait to see Captain Jack again. I hope it is not disappointing like Spiderman 3.
Anyone else going to the 8 or midnight showing tomorrow?

Yet they don't play it off at all as if Jack is dead or there will be any difficulty getting him back as he is shown in all of the trailers

True. I thought the same. I believe they tried too hard with the crazy stunts/computer animation. Entertaining, but unnecessary and it really dragged it out.

For some odd reason, Matinee shows are generally not that popular. There's a 9am show near me on friday. I love matinee's though. Less expensive, less crowded, and you get the exact same movie experience. I suppose it's more of an "I don't got the time" rather than "I don't wanna see a movie in the daytime".

Or most likely, it's more like "I don't want to get up early for a movie" like me. Luckily, matinees in NYC usually run until 4 PM on weekdays, so that matinee problem occurs only on the weekends.
Also, I saw the movie. I will not spoil the movie, which was GREAT to watch. If you hated the second movie, you'll love, or at least like, the third one. I kinda see what some critics were going on about but IMO I didn't think it was as much as they say it to be. Personally, I like it very much and pretty much sold me to buy the eventual box set in the future.
So the ranking is like this, IMO:
1) Curse of the Black Pearl
2) At World's End
3) Dead Man's Chest

Not necessarily.
Many complaints about the second movie were due to the lack of its story. This movie is even more lacking of a story.
Is there anybody that can tell me who was on what side and what they were fighting for? Sides were switched every chance that was presented.

Extreme Spoilers for PotC: At World's End
Will- Was for the East India Tea Company for majority of the movie to get a chance to get the Black Pearl to save his father. But later realizes that he has to choose either Elisabeth or his father, who started to have memory problems. He does eventually see that his plan failed and the EITC betrayed him. Fought for the side of the pirates towards the end.
Jack- Made a deal with Beckett from the EITC in order to save his own hide and secure his freedom from Beckett's plan to finish off piracy in the Caribbean. Jack basically switch back to the Black Pearl crew because it was more benifical to him at the time.
Elisabeth- She only switch sides once in order to save the crew from the Singporean pirates. But IMO, the biggest plothole in this series is that they never explain clearly why she was falling for Jack while, assumingly, was still in love with Will. I think it was because Jack was her ideal of a pirate in actual flesh. But it seemed like a passing fancy.
Norrington- After having his honor restored from his unhonorable discharge from the second movie and giving Beckett Davy Jones' heart, he realizes he's been played as a pawn after he finds out that Elisabeth's father was killed. He betrays EITC for Elisabeth and dies for it.
Barbossa- Only helped get Jack back for a favor for Tia Dalma after she revived from death, but still wanted the Black Pearl for himself. Tried to preserve piracy of the Caribbean and was rectulant to join up with Jack for it. But at the end of the movie, he did manage to steal the Black Pearl again, only that Jack took the map with the location of hidden treasures inside.
Tia Dalma- This is only assuming, but she helped Jack because he holds one of the Nine of Eight Coins which were seals placed on her true form, Calypso. Once she had her power restored, she basically betrayed the pirates, who were hoping that Calypso would save them, by leaving them to their deaths.
Sao Feng- Betrayed the Code by helping the EITC get the Black Pearl crew in hopes of trying to protect the Singaporean pirates from EITC's plan to get rid of all pirates. Realizes that he's been double crossed somewhat by the EITC, he plans to revive Calypso to get back at them.
And I have to disagree that the third movie had less story than the second. The third movie was focused on finishing all the loose ends of the second movie, which I thought that they did an okay job of. The only minus about it is the sudden introduction of so many new elements of the story... although they managed to resolve them in an okay fashion.

My dad.
Is such.
An R-tard.
He took 10 screaming kids to see Shrek the Third (AND I HAD TO TAKE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM TO THE RESTROOM AT LEAST ONCE) for my younger brother's birthday because, you know, our weather is basically ****ed due to global warming. So I did the best I could, helped with the presents, BAKED THE ****ING CAKE SINCE I'M THE ONLY WOMAN IN OUR HOUSEHOLD WITH RELATIVE DOMESTIC SKILLS, and cleaned up afterward...
Well, I just happened to see the Pirates trailer and my friends and I discussed seeing the Midnight viewing last night, because 7 of us have the Top 10 GPA in our grade and we honestly couldn't give a flying ducky **** less if we were too tired to go the next morning.
Well, MAH DAD (who would allow this for my 11-year-old sister with the Reading Comprehension of a vegetable) decided I WASN'T ALLOWED TO GO, because I had caught a cold. So then I asked if, since I had a cold, I would be exempt from school today.
"Of course not."
So I decided to beg my mom to stay home today and my friends promised they'd call and tell me the details.

I'm not saying it wasn't thrilling to watch on the big screen or not exciting to watch because it was, and it had some of the best special effects I've ever seen.
However, you cannot defend this movie's lack of coherency.
All this movie was, was a mish mash of scenes without a narrative.
49% on RT is far from being a great movie. I think the term great is vastly overused in the context of movies, think of the term "love" being used in highschool relationships.
Not just the negative reviews, but even the positive reviews point out the same problems. Common denomenators found in majority of the reviews: confusion, incoherence, convoluted, overplotted, 'not comprehensible'.

saw the midnight showing last night which was great since it wasn't crowded cuz they showed the movie earlier in the evening. so it was like seeing the movie a couple of days later.
anyways, i liked it. i was a little tired since it was late night but i wasn't "bored tired" or sleepy like during the second film. the action, effects, and humor were top-notch as always but like the majority of complaints i really didn't know what the heck was going on. i didn't watch #2 the night before with my sister and friends or even #1 recently so i probably lost a few connections but i still remembered the basics. that being said...
there was so much side-swapping and backstabbing i couldn't keep track but i guess that's the point so no biggie. then the whole pirate brethren and lords comes out of nowhere with no real history or meaning. krakken is dead, wtf when how why?! what happens to davey jones? does he go to the locker too? i had no problem with the ending, though i was hoping will's dad would be the hero.
overall it was a good movie, certainly wouldn't say it deserves that low 49% rating on rottentomatoes.

I saw this last night, the effects where cool and all but the transitions needed some work, like in scenes where their on the ship, and then on the beach its like nothing happened in between lol and then it turned into a chick flick at the end.
Captain Jack Sparrow (aka Johny Dept), was funny as usual though I got to hand it to the one eyed pirate for a good laugh. (Especially with the crabs lol)
I think this was a good wrap up of events.
I was hoping that at the ending credits Will turner turned out to look uglier then Davy Jones.

It felt like 2 hours of sword fighting, through in a few Jack Sparrow humorous moments, and other funny stuff, and conclude it with a chick flick ending.
My favorite/ parts were when Jack is running around the deck in the middle of cannon fire like it's nothing, and every cannon shot misses.

I would have to totally agree. So much backstabbing and unresolved loose ends made it so confusing. What happened with the love triangle? Thye dropped that. What happened to Davey Jones? What happened to Calypso?: Yes I know he died and she was released or whatever, but what was with the build up of their relationship if it amounted to nothing?
As for a positive, I liked the ending. Not your typical, happy ending. And they kinda made it open for a sequel, although I hope not.

As for the negatives that seemed to be mentioned frequently I did not find it confusing at all. Without all the subplots, twist and backstabbings it would kinda delude the whole pirate theme and in this one they just went all out, well thats how I saw it. That whole sequence with Jack in Davy Jones locker and the finale were gold.
I do hope there is more seeing how there could be.

I'm one of the people who loved the original, and thought that Dead Man's Chest was an awesome movie, well crafted in its story.
This movie sucks in comparison. Sure, it's not a bad movie, but the narrative is RIDICULOUS. More gripes below:
Firstly, what the hell was with the plot? Rescue Jack! Brethren Court! Calypso! Davy Jones! Bootstrap Bill! Marry me! Pirates versus EITC! In all seriousness, it was a MASSIVE jumble of plots that would have made plenty of sense if presented properly and coherently. Instead, it plays out like it's one massive...jumble of crap! Hardly anything is explained, and it's just bad plot as a result. The acting on the part of everyone except for Elisabeth and Will was pretty decent; those two were so cheesily bad I wanted to punch them (well, I wanted to do other stuff to Kiera Knightley, and I wanted to kill Orlando Bloom, but that's my usual stance on pretty boys who can't act).
On top of this, there was a lot of pretty eye candy on the way to the land of the dead/Davy Jones' Locker. However, all the trippiness isn't explained, like why the hell Jack is hallucinating. He's DEAD. He can't hallucinate. You're telling me that he's the only person to ever come back and hallucinate, of all the nutjobs we've seen? Hell, Barbossa should be hallucinating a storm up, with all the problems he's had through the movies. Same thing with Sao Feng. You're supposed to feel something when a character dies. I didn't care at all, because he was just Random Pirate #905736 to me. He didn't matter at all to the plot, except for his stupid map to the Locker. That's it. Not to mention that it was ridiculous with Jack's father. He added quite literally nothing to the film, and it isn't logical for Barbossa to know more of the Pirates' Code than Jack would, being that his father is keeper of said code!
That said, Davy Jones wins for being awesome, though sadly not as awesome as last movie.
Westlo

I thought Davy Jones was horrible last movie, him not being anywhere near Barbossa was one of the main reasons for 2 sucking imo. He actually grew on me a bit in this movie even though I can't take him seriosuly since Epic Movie. Booty booty booty bootin shakin everywhere.

What I don't get is:
Why kill the Kraken though? Surely with Beckett controlling its master, they could have eliminated the pirates much faster, right? Davey send the Kraken out after pirates in one direction, while he goes after pirates in the other. I guess they just wanted to make it easier for our heroes to win in the end.
Westlo
May 30th, 2007, 05:56 AM

I think Beckett made him kill the Kraken to assert himself as his master, also remember how Beckett wanted prisoners? That could've played another part in that and yeah it made it easier for the heroes too.

The map that said "Fountain of Youth" and his bit about other ways of keeping away from death didn't say anything about that? XD

I have a theory.
Number four is gonna suck. Same goes for Spiderman.

I heard that
If there is a number 4, then Orlando Bloom refuses to return...

The scene after the credits pretty much writes those 2 out of this series for good.

Which is undoubtedly a good thing. I've always hated Will Turner as a character, and Elizabeth became immensely boring ever since the second.

Since they really shouldn't be in a 4th pirates movie, a 4th one actually has the potential to be better than the 2nd and 3rd.

Especially considering how wooden an actor Bloom is. Knightley seems to be even less talented. I cringed when she gave her prepare for battle speech.

The 4th has to have Barbosa, love Geoffrey Rush in that role.

I think Knightley can do better than Bloom, but that speech was just atrocious. I expected her to say something like "What are we? Mice or men!?" and one of the pirates to respond with "You're a woman.", but alas, didn't happen.

could someone spoil the scene after the credits for me? I have no intention of sitting through another 3 hours plus credits, to see a scene that they didn't have to stick in there.

Will returns after 10 years to Elizabeth and their child.
Its unclear as to if he is returning to land for good, or if its only that one day allowed every 10 years to the captain of the dutchman.
Some speculate that he'll be able to return for good because Elizabeth was faithful throughout the 10 years, others say he fullfilled his duty.

I definitely agree getting rid of those 2 might just give the series a much needed boost.

Man, I just seen the movie last night and my, oh my was it good.
I never seemed to see the big deal with the first PotC movie and I've never been interested to watch part two, but I was dragged to watch "At World's End" by a friend and I've got to say I now see what the fuss is about.
With the disappointment that was Spiderman 3 and the horrible horrible taste that 28 Weeks Later left in my mouth (I couldn't believe how bad that movie was. Maybe the worst I've ever seen) I wasn't pleased with what this summers was bringing to the table. With a friends desire to see PotC:AWE at any cost, I decided what the hell and I'm so glad I went.
I liked the movie so much I borrowed the same friends copy of PotC: Dead Man Chest DVD and I can't seem to fathom why so many people seem to dislike it. Sure it was a little all over the place, but I feel it set the stage perfectly for movie 3, which honestly I don't see as a stand alone movie enough to call it a 3. More like a 2.5 in my eyes (Which Spiderman 3 should have done maybe two quarters through the movie so they could make a decent part 4...Which now is unlikely...)
With an interesting plot, Great characters (Barbossa for FTW), Great musical score (The last scene score was fantastic) And an all around awesome movie from start to finish, I have to say this is one of the better movies of the summer and one of the best movies I've seen in a while. I just think people are critiquing the movie to harsly and not engoying it for what it's worth.
EDIT: My listing from the best to not so best;
Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
And imo, That's what a movie trilogy is suppose to do. Each succeeding the last.

Thanks, Depression. Given how you described that scene, I'd say they could leave it open for Wil and Elizabeth to be in a fourth movie, and at the same time, it's left open to write them out, too.

Hm. I think this thread needs more FANZ. I am a Pirates fanatic, and I'm not talking about Knightly and Bloom. They played their role just fine in my opinion--the only one I really care about is Jack and all the minor characters. But even so, I think the 3rd movie couldn't have come out any other way. It wrapped up all that was unanswered from Movie 1 and 2. Geez, I know you guys don't want the series to be over, but you don't have to get all angry about it. :naughty:

@Depression/ShadowCast: Just to clarify, according to the novel Will was released from it, due to Elizabeth staying faithful. The reason Davy Jones was so pissed off that he had to stay as the ferryman was because he could have gotten out of it had Calypso shown up ten years later. So it's pretty much set in stone that Will is free of duty, though he presumably can return to said duty whenever he wants, I imagine.
@meron_dori-ma: I'm a fan. Doesn't mean I can't be angry about how the film felt like it was completely butchered. I could have made a better film that was more cohesive, and by God, the Kraken would have been in it a lot longer. :P
