I can't really say that we needed all these remakes of the same games and etc, but hey... I loved Final Fantasy IV and even though I just played FFIV Advance somewhere over a year ago, I wouldn't mind checking out this 3D remake of FFIV for the DS.

I also do not get the idea of Square-Enix of releasing remakes of games that were released more than a decade ago or even a sequel of Final Fantasy XII ("Final Fantasy XII: Reverent Wings"), unless it is a way for the developer to repair relationships between it and Nintendo.

Well it is only pretty recent that Nintendo and Square(soft) became "friends" of fixed misunderstandings or w/e...forgot what exactly it was but i think it was like 2-3 years ago =-/

I don't really get the idea of why they're making a 3D remake of IV when they just released FFIV Advance back in 2005. If this pattern continues, then we can expect to see 3D remakes of FFV and FFVI as well for the DS, though those also just came out recently for the GBA as FFV and FFVI Advance. I just don't really see any point to it other than Square-Enix trying to make some more money, but as long as the games are enjoyable, I'll play them. I'm just failing to see the point of remaking the same game again and again.

That's what they always do, even if it isn't remake/ports/reports. As a business that's what they intend to do

Indeed. The only remake I can say I'd really look forward to is FF6, though.

I would hope they'd spend more effort on FF6, since I can already tell they put no effort into the background design for 4. Maybe it's still a good game, but it just looks ugly to me.

I don't like the 3d at all. Also, if they are going to remake the classics, they should do it after at least 3-5 years from the last remake they made of that game and add more into it, not jsut that game (Like compiling FF1-6 all together would be nice).
Also, if they would make a compiling of DQ1-7, that would make my day, and maybe even year.

Well, does being "different" have to be that bad? Because Square Enix want's the game to bring their classic games to today's game systems. Like with the D.S and PSP.
Personally though, I really like what Square Enix is doing to FFIV on the D.S. Which they're also gonna add voice acting. Which's never been heard due to the graphical limits of the past game systems.

Yes we did, though not 3D remakes. They remade FFI & II for the PS1 as FF Origins years ago and then they released GBA ports of both games known as Dawn of Souls with some slight changes and a few additions to the games.

Plus the fact that they'll be remade again for the PSP pretty soon here. Still not 3D though, and I'm not sure what makes them any different this time besides another graphical upgrade.

Final Fantasy IV is one of my favorite games of all time. I loved playing the original when it came out for the Playstation as part of Final Fantasy Chronicles. I sure wouldn't mind revisiting this fantastic game in full 3D!! I just hope it doesn't lose the charm the original game had. It would definitely be a DS game worth owning!!
EDIT: The boss music in the original FFIV was definitely great. I love it myself. The Nintendo DS has great sound capabilities, but I have a feeling it isn't going to be as great because they are sure to alter it. I hope this release doesn't disappoint and it becomes a respectable remake with some great boss music.

Likewise. I've had so many great childhood memories of playing it on the SNES when I was a kid. Not to mention I did play and beat it when it was re-released on Final Fantasy Chronicles and I just recently played FFIV Advance about a year ago. I'm sure I've beaten it several times in my lifetime now. Like you before me, I'm hoping a lot of good comes from this, though I'm afraid the DS remake just might not have the charm that the SNES/PS1/GBA versions had. I'll be interested to hear what the music will sound like on the DS remake. I absolutely adore the music in Final Fantasy IV and it has to be one of my favorite Final Fantasy soundtracks ever. The boss music is just extreme.

I don't think they could fit three discs worth of data on to one DS cartridge, unless you would want an extremely dumbed down port of Final Fantasy VII, which I wouldn't.

That's pretty dumb logic right there. Nintendo DS has a smaller resolution, and most of the data in FFVII was FMV. Nowdays, compression can shrink all that data to about 1/5 the size with no noticable loss in quality. Besides, look at Resident Evil 2 for N64, fitting two disks worth of video into one cartridge.
To be honest, if they ported FFVII to DS, why can't they just remake it la FF3? Polygons use up much less data than huge prerendered backgrounds. Even FF:CC Crystal Bearers shows that DS is pretty good even at displaying realtime effects.
But even if they do stick to just a plain port (pre-rendered backgrounds/FMV intact), I don't see Square having any problems. I think it's mainly because of the fanbase and their association with it and Sony.

I am quite skeptical and I need reliable sources regarding compression and polygons using less data than pre-rendered backgrounds.
If current compression can reduce a CD-based video game to about 1/5 of its size, then is it possible to port every PlayStation, Sega Saturn, or Sega Dreamcast game to the DS or to the Wii's Virtual Console?

lol, might as well be if it were Wii. The only thing Square can do consistently anymore is production values. If they did PS3 incarnations they can keep the gameplay the exact same for all anybody cares, do what they do with the graphics, and be heralded for it.
I would love to see a reversion FFVII one day. Scaled down to SNES style graphics for a DS variation would also be cool. But that'll never happen. I'm more into that style myself, but FFIV was my fav, the one that started it all for me, so I'll be checking out this 3-D variation no doubt.

You know, that wouldn't be such a bad idea. It would be the prettiest 16-bit sprites in a game, plus the smoothest attack animations for it.

No doubt. It'd be awesome. Chrono Trigger is still the pinnacle of the whole style because Square abandoned it. Their attitude towards 2-D is really reminiscent of Sony and only do remakes at best anymore. Their rehashing old ones in odd 3-D styles of all things.
Well, at least we got Nippon Ichi if nothing else. Though there games are almost all so hardcore I can't even get into em. And a remake of my favorite FF, even if in 3-D, is most certainly a welcome addition. If I don't like it I'll simply stop playing, but the potential nostalgia is too good to pass up. Here's hoping FFVI gets one on a system with a bit more graphical power (no offense DS).

In case some of you don't know. Final Fantasy IV will be released for the DS on December 20, 2007. I'm really looking forward to it myself. It would be a great game to replay again. Hopefully it would be worthy enough to give up my FFIV Advance for it. I just hope they keep most of the original music from the original game.
As far as Final Fantasy VII is concerned, SquareSoft (at the time) originally jumped to the Playstation platform and decided to leave Nintendo after so long releasing that game exclusively for the Playstation at the time. Now that SquareEnix is making games for Nintendo platforms again, I don't see how they can't do a FFVII with the success of the Nintendo DS. I'm sure the DS card will have enough memory to handle the whole game; at least without the CG graphics.

Lemina,
I would have to agree. I would love to see them come out with FFVII for the DS. It was definetly my first FF game and not only that it was the first Video game I was ever able to play and win at. Although the PS version was nice and I know the DS version will have less animation in it, I believe the story was exceptional in that game. I never really been into the other FF games but I would definetly have to say the FFVII was awesome.

Oh thats right, I forgot the mention that the game was going to be released in Japan on that date. There has been no announcement for US release as of yet, but I'm sure it will considering the popularity of the series. Final Fantasy III DS has already been out since last year. It's also worth mentioning that Nintendo DS games are region free, so if you pick up the Japanese release of FFIV, you'll still be able to play it. Either that, or you'll have to wait until it gets released in the US. I'm sure it will be released by around early next year considering FFIII came out in the US 3 months after the Japanese version came out. Keep on eye on their official (http://www.square-enix.com/na/index_f2.html) website.

I never knew you could fall in love all over again with something you never lost love for, but if there ever was a case, this is it.
The game is beautiful, and even though I can't understand the dialog, I have played the game hundreds of times and remember ever nook and cranny of the original. I assume that will be able to guide me though the game with minor altercations.
Oh, he also let me borrow it. So I WILL be playing this game until completion and then when the American version comes out, I'll buy that one and play it how God intended us to play it.

That's....earlier than I would've expected. Anybody listen to the rereleased soundtrack to the game? I think it's beautiful, especially how they decided to add introductions to tracks like "Theme of Love" or "Rydia". I always thought they began a bit abrupt.
If and when VI is remade, I wonder if they'll do so for tracks like "Forever Rachel", which I think, in its current state, lacks subtlety and is overrated.

Yea I've had the OST for a while. There are definitely some tracks that just sound great, especially when compared to the SNES originals like the FFIV Main Theme, Big Battle 2, and Battle with Golbez's Four Kings. I actually think I prefer the 16 bit original of the Red Wings music though to be honest, but the DS rendition of it is still good stuff. Though of course this is the best version of the Red Wings music in my opinion.

FFIV Advance was sorta...buggy in some areas. FFVI Advance was a better port, and even then the ending part with Dancing Mad and the Credit sequence didn't quite sync right...
That said, yeah purists would wan to stick to Advance. Add to the fact that a whole slew of DS RPGs are coming in July, it's hard to narrow the options down.

The UK version of FFIVAdvance had all of the bugs sorted out. I think FFVIAdvance is fine as it is, since they didn't retouch the sprites (and the loading doesn't suck like FF Anthologies).
That said, I do hear that FFIVDS has boosted difficulty (from the already hard hardtype), and the Augment system lets you commit abilities of your dead allies to your comrades. The only gripe is it doen't come with the extra dungeons the GBA version has.

But I'm pretty sure it does have a few new extras. Two of which I know are two new super powerful extra bosses. One being Proto Babel, which you can fight on the moon, and the other being some fusion of the Four Fiends of Elements named Geyron.

There are definitely some that are better and some that I prefer the originals of. For example, I prefer the SNES version of The Red Wings theme and Mt Ordeals.

Quite glad that the English voice acting actually sounds good. I was afraid the voices were gonna stink, but I'll gladly be buying the game now once it's released stateside. Rosa's voice could have been a little better, but that's just my opinion, though only basing it off one little scene.

I've just reached the Antlion's Den, will probably try and level up more before fighting it. The game is definitely more difficult, bosses hit harder, and the change to Cecil's Darkness attack makes fighting against groups a longer affair. I've been loving the cut scenes so far, the 3D is really well done, and the voice acting is solid, making it all the more enjoyable to see certain scenes (Village of Mist (http://youtube.com/watch?v=0J3MrQt6XIU)) voiced. I haven't really messed around with Rydia's new summon, Whyt, but I'll get around to that too. All-in-all, I'm finding this game highly enjoyable (It is my favorite FF and one of my favorite games in general), and this may turn out to be my favorite version of the game.
Spoony Bard...

So it's safe to assume that Tellah calls Edward a spoony bard even in this version?

Yep, I'm pretty sure the localization crew is well aware of the popularity of that line, so I would've been highly surprised had it been changed.
Just reached Mt. Hobs, the Antlion was surprisingly easy, even easier than Octomammoth. Also, Edward is actually useful for once. The Map completion bonuses are very nice, especially if you're running low on the specific item you get. I did summon Whyt in the Antlion battle, but felled it before getting to use him.

Yes, he calls him that during a combat scene. Although I would've love to hear that part voiced.
Edward definately makes things easier with Life's Anthem.

Did they remove the glitches from the JP version? There's one that freezes and corrupts your game hard at one point.

It's a pain, to be sure. The Ice Beasts in the Tower of Zot killed me countless times, once when I was a few steps from the save room. Thankfully Barbariccia wasn't too difficult, the Magus Sisters as well.
What's really bugging me was that I started looking into the Augments and New Game+ info on GameFAQs yesterday, and realized how deep it was implemented into the game, making me consider restarting, but I'm just gonna play my first play through in a more traditional fashion without augments, I think. I had assumed that it was just a tacked on way to still be able to "use" the lost characters after they were gone, but was surprised to see just how many different Augments there were, and how they could be used and acquired throughout the game.
About to head to the Underworld, can't wait to get Rydia back, as she's my favorite character.

I love that video/song, it's on my PSP, along with the SNES and DS versions of that theme.
As for the Augments, I've used a few, and did get Cagnazzo's Augment, but only gave it to Tellah. Thus far I've found the Augment Combo Draw Attack + Counter on Cecil to be exteremely effective, and I hear you can further that with the Kick Augment as well. I also gave Rydia Fast Cast and Cecil/Rose Twin Cast, but have either missed Augments or just haven't gotten them yet.
Just past the Tower of Babel and just about to enter Eblan Cave. In the past, I spent more time running through Babel than fighting, this time I did, and doing so netted me about 6-7 levels a character. Between Cecil countering every attack for 1000+ damage, and Rydia's summons doing 2000+ damage, enemies were going down quickly and easily. This game is just too easy to play and enjoy, I can't put it down (even when I was dying over and over.)
For those interested, here is a pretty cool video that compares early scenes of the Original version and the DS version, side-by-side. Final Fantasy IV Handheld Evolution (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fMwc7Aog8T8)

I made the mistake earlier of giving the Tsunami augment to Yang. Looks like I'll have to start over from the point where I just got Cid. Besides, I have to analyze the **** all the enemies all over the world map now because of my collectionist attitude.

I'll be starting a brand new game sometime in the future (near or otherwise), in order to fully take advantage of the depth of the Augment system, which I only realized by the half-way mark.

Considering I felt like I was getting nothing out of doing New Game+ right now on Chrono Cross other than some endings, using some characters that I don't really even care about much, and getting to fight Ozzie, Flea, and Slash, I decided I'm putting doing everything on Chrono Cross on hold for a while and I started playing Final Fantasy IV DS last night. I must say it's quite an experience with it being in 3D. Right now I'm up to where I'm about to get Tellah. I'm just gaining some levels with Rydia before I move on outside of Kaipo. They weren't kidding when they said the difficulty has been increased greatly. Even goblins are hitting harder than ever. I laugh at a FAQ on Gamefaqs saying not to attempt to fight the Sand Worm in the Damcyan desert when you're first there, because it will KO you in one hit. Then how come I've been able to fend off two of them so far? Yea, they hit hard, but I can hit harder. I just use Blizzard with Rydia and have Cecil use Darkness and attack. I just heal when needed as well. It's also a bit of a pain having to train your Whyt in that math game. I was never good with math. -_-; The most I can get in one session is about 1,500 points. Does doing that raise anything else besides intellect? I'm guessing more mini-games will appear as I continue playing, to further strengthen my Whyt? Whom I renamed to Goma. If only I could have put Gomamon as his name, I would have. I gave him X X for his eyes and a stitch looking mouth.

If you get 9999 points in the Mini-Games, you unlock class outfits for Whyt, so completing Rydia's game with a 9999 score gets Whyt a summoner outfit. The best tip for the math game is the write the number down, close the DS, figure it out, and open the DS and solve the puzzle.
As for how it affects Whyt's stats, I'm not sure, I never even summoned him. With Young Rydia I mostly focused on Elemental and Bio spells, and as an Adult, I tended to spam Dragon/Leviathan/Bahamut.

This is more harkin to "hard" RPGs like Etrian Odyssey, so you can't just keep selecting "Attack" in new areas.

I've been doing this, but the most I can get is 5,250 points. The time it takes to open the DS back up and put in the numbers as fast as I can, it just eats up most of my time. I guess I'm just not fast enough when doing it. :(

I know I'm late here but gotta say I've fulfilled my promise. I've recently purchased Final Fantasy IV for the DS. I thought it was very enjoyable. I enjoyed the original game so much, and playing this game which was completely remade in 3D has been well worth revisiting this game. The music in this was very well done too. Overall, I thought it was well worth the money I spent on it. If you're an RPG fan or just a FF fan in general, I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't gotten in yet.

So anybody here play this more than once and fight the new super bosses like Proto Babil? I'm on my first playthrough and I'm just exploring the entire Lunar Path on the way to the final boss, getting all the map completion to get the Treasure Hunter augment. Then I'll start getting the Rainbow Pudding, all the other augments, and the all the tails for the Onion equipment. I was lucky enough to have a Blue Dragon drop a Dragon Whisker for Rydia, which is her best whip. :) Only bad thing is that that weapon won't carry over to a New Game+ file will it? :(

I remember reading talk about this recently, but has it been made official? In FFIV related news, I've actually acquired all the rare summons aside from Mindflayer, which I'm currently in the process of getting. Then I'm gonna start getting multiples of the tail items for the Onion equipment and Adamant Armor for my second and last playthrough of Final Fantasy IV DS where I'm planning to fight Proto-Babil. My Cecil and Rosa are at Lv 94, Edge is at Lv 93, Rydia is at Lv 92, and Kain is at Lv 91.

Well I was just lucky enough to finally get a Pink Tail from fighting Flan Princesses and thus got the Adamant Armor. My Cecil is at Lv 99 and with the Crystal Mail he had 55 defense. With the Adamant Armor, his defense skyrocketed to 130, not to mention greatly boosted a lot of his other stats, plus maxed out his speed. Now to just get one of each for the four other tails. Getting every piece of rare equipment for every character is too daunting and time consuming of a task, so I'm just gonna go for the four other tails I need. Then I'll fill up the rest of my bestiary that I can, try the Kain, Rosa, and Edge Whyt mini-games, then I'll finally move on and beat my first playthrough. Then enjoy one more playthrough with New Game+ and then I'm done playing Final Fantasy IV DS. I can't wait to actually get back to playing, rather than farming for items, because it's boring as hell.
