Which do you prefer overall?

I had to say both. I love Arakawa's drawings, but it was easier to follow the storyline of the anime.

The manga is better because it doesn't have this stupid crap about Ed going to Nazi Germany and Envy turning into a dragon. Don't get me wrong, I love the anime. The manga is just better in terms of story.

Well, seeing as how I've only read the first volume of the manga, I naturally think that the anime is better...

You should continue the manga, it's worth it.

The manga is the genuine article. The 2nd half of the anime series was nearly all made up by a 3rd party who don't have an iota of creative genius compared to Arakawa.

Screw bones and their plot holes & mistakes. Ill take the loss of animation & voice for a much better story anyday.

If that is the best you can do. We also have Shinji Ikari self loatheing homonculi who does not ant to see himself, Mr Triclops I created Alchemy except for Chinese and Jewish alchemy which I am vunerable too. Oh yes I forgot he drinks philosophers stones and craps them out of his magic third eyes. Boy, are you sure L Ron Hubbard and Ed Wood did not give this guy writing tips? I so want to see a film version of the manga just so we can riff it.

I anime really helped create great characters through voice talent, and emotional connections with the audience. I admit the movie was a little over the top, but it was good none the less.

Its not like Envy was a paragon on not being envious of the Elric brothers in the anime.

OH NO THE NAME MATCHes THE PERSONALITY!

I like both, but I find the story line in the manga is better (it also has more characters - eg. Lin and Lanfan) and Scars still running around at the point i'm at.

I've read about half of the manga (I need to start reading it again, actually!) and I've watched all of the anime (not seen the movie yet, though). I most certainly prefer the anime. Not only does the FMA anime benefit from all the usual aspects that makes anime superior to manga (music, colour, movement) but the storyline that Studio Bones created is by far superior to the route the manga went down.

Plus, Lust in the manga is criminally underdeveloped compared to how great she is in the anime!

hated anime ending but still love it as a whole

Would've preferred the anime have left off with the TV series and not the movie. Then I definitely would have felt it superior. Regardless, the last half of the series is what captivated me, and that was when Bone's take on it came into play. I guess the deviation in who's ideas were helming the thing helped give it that jarring effect. Keeping up with the manga though and it's still pretty good.

Guess I'm just glad we get two different takes on the story.

ya agreed, i wish they hadn't done that movie...

but if u only look at the serie, the story line is awsome, especially the second half.. its just amazingly deep, while short and sweet, unlike some other n##uto anime which had to use 300+episodes to make some story line.

So, the movie is bad, then? I haven't picked it up yet (no idea why, I love FMA!). Should I not bother with it?

It Depends. Sometimes i get fustrated by how quick it takes to read some manga. I think that a huge weakness of some manga such as naruto. Its so short that you can never realy immerse yourself enough in the world the mangaka is creating or feel saisfied. You're always left gaging for more like that guy who was cursed to starve for eternity with sumptious bits of food dangled just out of his reach. Though obviously this makes you really up for reading the next instalment of the manga, the manga can be as equaly successful if not more simply by extending its its length but maintaining its rate of release. At the very least customers would get more satisfaction. Then again that may not be possible when Shonen Jump are the editors.

I've seen all of the anime and have read the first nine volumes of the manga. I find myself liking everythng about the manga more, so it gets my vote.

The anime is better imo. I became emotionally attached to alot of the characters. Also, it puts more importance on drama which I think is important because the series already has alot of action and science stuff. It feels very balanced. Plus i love animation, especially quality animation. When I read stuff like bleach and naruto i'm always amped because I can't wait to see how it will be once they get it animated.

The manga seems overly focused on alchemy tech talk. I love that stuff though so its not a complaint, but thats the only advantage that the manga has to me. Well, that and it having a longer story.

I wish they'd actually have like a 2-3 episode OVA that summed up the series to where the manga differs (basically when its Furhor invades Greed's bar/hideout) and then they made a new series that followed the manga storyline. But the japn seem to have a love for killing a series even though its popular and you can still make quality stuff from it.

I like the anime more.

I liked how the Humonculi were created due to Human Transmutation, and that each Alchemist who attempted it had to carry their sin on their shoulders. It made humonculi more human. I loved Lust in the anime.

I like the manga how the Sins are killed according to how Dante thought each deadly sin should be punished, according to his seven layers of hell theory.

Divine Comedy, it was called? Or something like that.

Manga BY FAR
The Anime is just boring and way overdramatic... while the manga has a good balance of action, comedy, and drama. The Anime is just drama with occasional action

Plus, Hawkeye and Armstrong are WAY underdeelopped in the Anime

Well, it's sort of hard to say. The anime plot was weird but not TOO annoying. However, the manga is getting weird. Honestly, I don't care what evil deeds the Homonculi are up to now. Being a linear kind of person, I only care when Ed and Al's quest is involved. So I don't like where the manga is going at all.
On the other hand, I like the character development a lot better in the manga.

I say manga, but then again we're getting a new anime come April, probably based on the manga. I eagerly await the internet exploding.

Also, as the kind of guy that say, prefers TTGL to NGE I like the manga. Even as things grow dire it still brilliantly blends hilarious and awesome. The anime on the other hand, while a masterpiece in art, soundtrack, and story is absurdly depressing by the end. And then there's the entertaining but utterly batsh*t insane train-wreck that was the movie.

Anime by far, the author of the manga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-8j8c7iL3E&feature=related) watched too many Ed Wood movies while huffing gasoline considering Father's plot has been revealed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cE1fzfOogo). I am still flabbergasted people try to defend this crap.

Didn't Arakawa tell BONES to make their own ending? At least that's what I read some where. I think it was NEWTYPE USA a long time ago.
