Its what you would expect from Gainax. Your thoughts on the anime.

The mecha design looks boring. It's like every other super robot I ever saw with the good parts taken out. Personally I believe GAINAX are good for exactly one decent super robot anime, and they already delivered.
I may watch this someday. It is not top of my list, or even on the first page of said list.

I watched the first three and am in love with it already.
As for Mechs, I'm not a Mech fan in the first place, so how they look doesnt bother me. SO far, with how they are pulling them off for the story, I actually like them more than I thought I would. The characters are all top notch so far as well.

I would have to agree, mechs are not what sells me the anime but I can see why some would dislike the simple design, ofcourse compared to Evas and Gundams. But its the characters are what I make my decision on and if the entire show was all about Kamani I would watch it. Its the type of extreme "go get her" characters that make me remeber an anime.^_^

It had me hooked with the first ep,especially with what I assume was a preview of whats to come way down the line. The characters work pretty well the action is fast and fun, plus the dialog is funny.

I watched the first two episodes, and I found it quite good! The characters are awesome, especially Kamina, who rivals Sanger and Taiga with his hyperbole filled speeches of truth and justice. I love the Lagann's design, it reminds me of MODOK  I love the gattai sequence from the next ep. preview even more, Kamina just jams the Lagann's drill into the top of the Gurren's head, drilling through his own mech. Worst and THE most improvised gattai sequence ever!

I'm up to episode 3 and I have to tell you even though Gainax plans to take it to 26 they have a true action packed hit anime on their hands. Konami plans on making a videogame already. The story is good the characters are great and personally I dont think Gainax its going out just for the mech fanbase for this one, they proved to us they know how to do mech with Evangelion.
Soluzar

they proved to us they know how to do mech with Gunbuster.
I fixed that right up for ya. Gunbuster is far more a typical mecha anime than Evangelion, although possibly less typical than Gurren-Lagann. You couldn't reasonably call Evangelion an anime which was aimed at the pre-existing mecha fanbase, as evidenced by the fact that there are a lot of Evangelion fans who don't watch any other mecha anime.
The problem I see with Guren-Lagann is that it's just too generic. Watch some other super robot shows, and you'll find that this is nothing new. Of course if this happens to be the first you've seen, it will seem incredible.

This show is easily the biggest thing to hit mecha anime since, well, Evangelion. Only with actual mecha. And heroic heroes. And women over the age of consent.

People keep saying this. I'm going to have to check it out. The official site makes it look and sound about as dull as watching paint dry, but yours is an opinion that I cannot easily ignore. ^_^
This must be one of those odd cases where an anime is at least 200% better than it seems from previews.

To touch on what Soluzar is worried about, the show looks generic because it is generic, and it's supposed to be generic in every way. What the show is is essentially what Gunbuster was in the beginning -- that being a total parody of the super robot genre. However, unlike Gunbuster, the parody aspect in Gurren Lagann is not even close to as subtle. You have your hot-blooded, overly-positive and manly character, you have your scary, whiny and Shinji-ish character, you have your female character whose main emphasis is fanservice, and you have your giant robot which the main character finds and somehow every other piece of the robot combines to work perfectly (they make fun of this in episode 3). Everything is turned up to the extreme and becomes, in essence, a fairly unique super robot experience that is just plain old fun to watch.
Expect lots of insane action, expect lots of crazy one-liners and, most importantly, expect lots of fun. So far, that's all the series is -- lots of fun.

That's a terrible thing to tell me...
You see, I think GAINAX are mostly terrible. I mean, really unspeakably bad. There are always some wonderful ideas, and even some brief moments of clarity when things seem to be working out... but then it usually goes all incoherent and disorganised. I've seen a bunch of their anime, and I've only really liked one without reservations. If this turns out to be a typical GAINAX anime, I won't like it even a little.
If it has anything in common with FLCL, He Is My Master, and the other works which I think of as having the "GAINAX Flair", I'm not going to last as far as episode 3.
I know lots of people love GAINAX, and I'm not here to argue with those people, or to unnecessarily flame their favourites. I'm just not one of them, that's all. I like my anime to be well-executed. Good ideas are not enough.
KT Kore
April 23rd, 2007, 07:55 PM
Soluzar, just watch it and judge for yourself. ;) The show is unlike FLCL (in terms of content and plot, anyway -- animation-wise, it's a little similar), certainly nothing like He is My Master, and really unlike anything else GAINAX have done before. The show is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (of Dead Leaves fame, he also directed the sci-fi mecha episode of Abenobashi) so, superficially, the animation style is akin to his usual craziness. Content-wise, as I said before, the show is nothing more than a fun and self-aware super robot anime that doesn't take itself seriously. I don't know if you've seen Abenobashi or the mecha episode from that series, but Gurren Lagann, so far, is a much more elaborate yet toned-down and somewhat less-goofy version of that.
Mystic Gohan
April 23rd, 2007, 07:56 PM
Wow, to each their own. Thats respectable, but if my word is even worth a parcel to your decision I would say some scenes in the anime may be considered "usual" Gainax style but as for major scenes there is little distortion of their usual character designs, as for the story, personally I would really like everyone to enjoy this one but its sounds that you might want to hold off until someone can give you indepth series review. I dont want your image of the anime to be spoiled by the seemingly traditional Gainax esc story in the early episodes, if it actual turns out to be good by your standards.

To be perfectly honest, I felt the same way at first, and was ready to pass on this show. I was expecting an emo whiney kid as the lead, and all sorts of other Gainax nastyness, and I thought the Gurren-Lagann looked like some kind of Daitarn clone. I checked it out because of all the adulation it received from mecha fans. Lets just say that I was reminded of GaoGaiGar. And in my books, it means it is made of win, valor and AWESOME.

I can't really ignore you AND Crossbone, AND Mystic Gohan, so I'll give it a try. I was underwhelmed by the first episode -- it seemed all full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. I didn't care for the Vaughn Bode-esque animation style; and the content seemed aimed squarely at one's inner 12-year-old : assuming one's inner 12-year-old has ADHD.
Not enough to want to fit later episodes into my schedule.

As someone who has been watching Dancougar Nova, I can tell you right now not to bother with it. I'm not too upset by the character designs, as they did evolve, as the characters are not lolis anymore (technically, they are all adults). It's the plot, setting and overall premise that I'm disappointed with. It doesn't feel like Dancougar at all. And the lack of Shinobu and the old crew is also a detractor. If its meant to be a sequel, shouldn't there be more ties to the source material?

Love this show. It's engineered from top to bottom to be the most entertaining thing on television. The animation is great, the show is brilliantly overblown and constantly hilarious... if you don't like it you're not a human.
Brace yourself for episode 4 though, it's caused quite a stir in the fandom. What happened is they brought in Osamu Kobayashi (director of Beck, Paradise Kiss) and gave him a lot of creative freedom -- he directed, storyboarded, and animation-supervised the episode. Personally I thought it was absolutely atrocious but things will get back to normal by episode 5. I'm just saying in advance before this thread inevitably heads in that direction -- it's not a sign that animation production has moved to Korea -- it's not an indication of Gainax running out of money or whatever. It's just they gave a certain animator a lot of creative freedom for one episode.

4-27-07 (4:45AM EDT)---- Gainax Director Takami Akai Resigns Over Mixi Diary Commentary
One of Gainax's founding members, Director Takami Akai has announced his resignation after comments he published in his Mixi Diary were scrutinized by fans for being "discomforting". He was a producer and prominent force behind Gainax's latest animation, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann which started running on Japanese TV this month. Akai published his resignation on the Gainax website on April 27th. He's well known as the creator of the popular "Princess Maker" girl grooming simulation games. The comment in question lashed out at alleged criticism of Gurren Lagann made on 2ch with some rather graphic language. A wave of fan comments subsequently poured into the main Gainax blog indicating they had collectively been insulted. Akai posted an apology along with his resignation, saying that there was no room for an excuse to his actions. His mixi diary was open to the general public. His name will disappear from the credits of Gurren Lagann from the 5th episode, scheduled to broadcast on the 29th. He expressed heartbreak at leaving the staff of the show after having been intimately involved on the production for over 5 years. Akai has his own company titled NineLives and is married to mangaka Kimiko Higuchi.

That is a different case, but it sounds like the same kind of thing. Except that what this GAINAX chap said was obviously somewhat worse if it involves "graphic language". The NISA chap was just being a putz because he takes criticism personally, and doesn't like me.

His resignation was mostly symbolical though, he's still at Gainax and Lagann production planning was finished anyway. He just thought it was the best for the company to end up well-placed after the controversy rather than just leave it be and don't take into account their mistakes. It's a shame, but nothing too important and it mostly just caused a lot of unnecessary noise.
As for episode 4, I really loved it but I've liked Kobayashi's direction and animation style from the beginning, I like how he has no limits to his youthfulness and always manages to create imaginative and crazy visuals. This actually much better from his Kemonozume episode, although that may be for here he had a few really competent animators helping him in the task.

Just watched 7 and 8 after black order released them and wow.... best gainax anime since Gunbuster just based off the first 8 episodes alone. Kamina is my fav character in anime this decade easily... :(
Taku Iwasaki (sp) is doing ana amzing job on the soundtrack, this guy sadly just doesn't get his due compared to every other big time anime composer.
Oh btw is the recap scenes in ep 6 on dvd getting replaced by fanservice scenes not suitable for 8.30am?

Oh btw is the recap scenes in ep 6 on dvd getting replaced by fanservice scenes not suitable for 8.30am?
Yes, based on the GAINAX panel at Fanime Con, Yamaga stated that episode six of Gurren-Lagann was originally "about peeping on the women", and the network wouldn't allow it so they had to fill it in with something. He then mentioned something about the material being filled in on the DVD.

the direction of this series changed within one episode. Viral got his a$$ whooped in ep 7 with the Gunbuster-tribute kick. maybe it was the exact one, idk, never seen Gunbuster.
my least favorite character, though, is Lon.

My god, Rossiu is being written just like Tony Stark.
Pre Civil War = Pre-timeskip (acts normal)
Civil War = Timeskip (acts like Hitler)

Man, episode 21 was one of the best episodes the series had to offer. Everything was just well paced and I must say teacher Yoko = <3. The ending was nothing short of epic to. Can't wait for next weeks'.
I do have one question though, I thought since the helix king was destroyed, enemy Gamen couldn't activate. So whats up with the two Gamen that attacked the school?

Probably fake, but DAYUM if it´s real.
We find out about Kamina's true nature after the biological computer (spiral king) translates Adai village's holy book (the one with the mugan on the cover).
It is a historical documentation of the millennium-long war between the spiral and anti-spiral civilizations. It also briefly mentions the existence of a 'Spiral Catalyst' that may someday renew the conflict and cause the end of the known universe.
Kamina was the Spiral Catalyst. An artifical spiral being with implanted memories that was sent to Earth (the home planet of a spiral being with tremendous spiral potential) by a sinister and unknown third party who wishes to renew the conflict. This is how Kamina unconsciously knew the names and abilities of the Lagann and Gurren. Kamina carried out his programming (unbeknownst to him) perfectly, ultimately resulting in the foiling of the Spiral Extermination System on Earth.
Kamina is also an anagram for 波風 (なみかぜ), meaning 'discord.'
Simon promptly becomes slightly insane after learning the true nature of his aniki.

So I watched 22.
Pure epic. I was fangasming almost the entire time, it was just amazing. Also: if that above spoiler occurred, I would not be pleased. It would seem like it'd be trying too hard for a sequel, then (because there's no way all that could be wrapped up that quickly, especially if you consider a single episode is needed for introduction).

I just hate how the whole episode had a "Final Fantasy IV" feel to it. (To those who've played FFIV, You know what I'm talking about). I maybe have to watch the subbed version, but damn, I disliked this way more than episode 4 and episode 6 put together.

This episode was in no way bad. Actually it was very good, direction, music, and artistic wise. The animation is second only to episode 15, which is a huge accomplishment made even more significant by the fact that this episode was all action.
As for the actual content in the episode itself, I think it was in no way surprising. After all, the Anti-Spirals did promise despair, and they made true on their promise. I think that was the entire point of this episode, to bring things down so that they could bring it back up again for the finale.

thats really the point of the show. since day 1 its been all over the top stuff, but somehow it throws in some drama and amazingly works just right.
its like an MNight Shaymalan movie. He takes subjects that usually make for bad B or C movies (ghosts, aliens, etc) and turns them into A movies.
I see gurren lagann something along those lines. they take Overblown crazy mechs, crazy hyped up characters looking for a fight, incredibly hot women, a battle that goes form underground to above, to space, to the moon, and now to another universe, and makes them go so WAY over the top that the end result is magnificent.

On a side note, when doing some biology homework, I found something neat.
You know how the Spiral King's generals were named Adiane, Thymilph, Cytomander, and Guame? Well, it just so happens the four monomers that make up DNA are adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. Coincidence? Considering how much they beat us over the head with LOLSPIRAL, I think not.
End Evangelion type fanwankery.

1) ADV didn't do a hostile takeover, Geneon outsourced their DVD production and distribution to ADV. That's it. There's no chance the two would ever bother with each other. Bandai had a similar agreement at one point, now they make their own again and they're untouched in terms of ownership. So enough with the hostile takeover bit.
2) 4chan won't explode from fanwankery. Obviously you've never been there. Stuff is posted in /co/ and /m/ regularly that rivals and absolutely destroys the little tidbit I threw up there. That's not even touching some other boards. So yeah.
