View Full Version : YouTube Gets Serious

Ok.... so after waking up this morning and I go to check my account on YouTube, but what do I see?! I see this (http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=k0YEWkxDzEc). And just because I had a few funny clips I made from Dragonball Z and One Piece uploaded into my account, they just delete those videos? No.... they just go and delete my whole account instead. That's strange considering they seemed to be ok with it before for months and just about everyone else on YouTube was doing it. All I can say is that was about as bad for me as getting kicked in the groin when I woke up to see this. All those videos I had saved under my favorites are all but gone now... Just because they had to delete my account when they very well could have just deleted my videos. Ladies and Gentlemen... it doesn't get much lamer than that I'd have to say.

Well, you broke the rules. What did you expect?
The crackdown was always going to come. And with the amount of news coverage its been getting I hardly sympathise with those who are surprised that they got caught doing something they shouldn't be doing.

Just to delete the videos and at least give me some warning, but I guess that's not how it works there. It sure took them a long time if they were going to do what they did, but oh well...

As much as I hate to say it, I don't really watch the news.

I guess a warning might have been appropriate. However, considering the volume of traffic that goes through Youtube every day, you can hardly blame them for wanting to do things quick, and do 'em right.
They're only now putting into practice their guidlines and regulations because of increased pressure from big licensing companies such as Fox.

I feel short clips (say under 3 minutes) of anime should be allowed, whereas the accounts of people who post entire episodes (in 10 minute chunks) should be deleted.

And I guess you think you sound cool for constantly trash talking people? I will say however though that I don't really understand why people would want to only watch anime on YouTube on some small little box when they can just easily download it and watch it at fullscreen with hopefully nice looking quality. The only justification I can give for that is hard drive space, but it's not like it's that hard to get extra space for a decent price nowadays.

...no, i don't wanna sound cool. its the voice of reason. people who watch anime on youtube SHOULD be shot. aside from the fact that you don't get a decent screen size to watch it on, you have to watch it in increments of 10 minute videos. what if the 2nd part of a 3-parter was corrupted? I don't think he was trying to sound cool, it's a pretty accurate statement. Those who watch anime on Youtube probably don't know how to use torrents, or don't know what they are.

The massive amount of files on YouTube aside, the law sides with them completely deleting the accounts. They are legally responsible not only for the content put into their systems, but also legally responsible for the actions of their members in regards to their uploads.
Besides, isn't it, and hasn't it always been, a violation of YouTube's TOS to upload copyrighted material of which you are not the copyright holder? That's what I seem to remember talking about with a couple of friends about a year ago. Right now, YouTube is cutting material from companies threatening or pursuing legal action, yet if they serve injunctions (which these functionally are) against anyone violating this portion of the TOS then they can be held responsible to remove all pieces related to that TOS violation.
The short fix? Create a new account (unless they've completely banned your IP addy) and don't upload content you don't own.

Youtube should stop acting like sissies & get tough! Either they accept the charges from companies threatening legal action against them like r34l mens, or they should do something about it.
I propose they send the Youtube shocktroopers round to the houses of all those that violate the terms of use, instead od going behind peoples' backs deleting their accounts like little girly men!

They are accepting the charges like real men - that's why they're deleting files and accounts. Perhaps it would be a little shady, if say, I had some video of me doing karaoke to the theme of Hokuto no Ken and they had deleted my profile. They're merely complying with something they don't have a legal leg to stand on.

It was a good source to watch the first 5 episodes or so of one show just to see if it was download or purchase worthy.
It was also good to find old anime that can be difficult to find in torrents with still active seeds.

Who owns the Japanese rights to Bleach? I don't think it's Toei, whom I believe is one of the ones spearheading Japanese IP lawsuits against YouTube. Which was my first clue as to why Dragonball Z and ONE PIECE clips are being removed.

Just give a quick search on the interweb and you will find something. Its their bad, I know a lot of sites that will try to take over Youtube place after this one:P
Until they realize that they have to "adapt" in order to stop piracy..

For those who are upset I have a question. Are you willing to spend say, 5 million dollars to create something that is then distributed for free? After that of course you'll have fans of your work DEMANDING more of your creation for free.
This isn't communism where everyone works for free dammit. I admit to downloading fansubs but certain shows will NEVER be available in the US like Pita Ten and Fushigiboshi no Futago Hime. If you can pay for something pay for it.

Its youtube. It was bound for them to start cracking down sooner or later. Im the first to admit to watching shows(unlicensed, except Bleach) on there; its a good tester to find out if I would like something when on DVD.
But you have to expect the fact that somethings are going to happen...like anime being taken down.

.....capitalism goes beyond just that.
there are several problems with licensing: 1. is the editing and voice acting, which usually sucks compared to the original japanese voices, and even the subs, which often arent accurate. 2. is the the fact that an entire series takes months to completely release, and even years 3. is the sometimes very cheap episode number per dvd ($23 for three episodes my A**:$%&#!:) 4. is the price per dvd, which varies upon the licensing company and the series, the store you buy it at, or the website that you've finally found it because it is literally impossible to find

Those "money-grubbing" tactics are the result of business decisions designed to maximize return on investment, in order to bring more content over and continue the cycle. The only way you have a say in the matter is by choosing whether or not to buy the finished product, otherwise individual opinion matters very little in the domestic anime industry.

Personally I use the Veoh Player's web browser plugin, which makes a handy little toolbar on your browser (either internet explorer or firefox) that checks for videos or music embedded in the web page & lets your download them through Veoh Player, which happens to be the only reason I even use Veoh Player.
