View Full Version : Gender And Media

I'm currently in a Gender and Media class, and as much as I LOVE men-hater radical feminists, the class is pretty interesting. Thing is, we have to produce a video on how WE personally view gender, and how it effects us. The video has to be 60 seconds long, and can have whatever in it.

Since I am an African-American female, Tomboyish on top of that, you think I have a lot of options. Which I do I suppose, but this was just a thread asking if there are any ideas of what I could do the video on, and how to get certain ideas across. In 60 seconds no less.

Well, before anybody can answer what you could put in your video to represent your ideas, what are you ideas, first of all?

Well, there are a lot of pretty stereotypical ones. Having to deal with how black women are portrayed in the media, being a woman and dealing with things like body image, how I'm supposed to act, ect. I do feel as if women are controlled by the media (although we do it to ourselves a lot), black people make fools of themselves on TV, and that there are more than the traditional "two" genders.

I'm pretty liberal, and from the way I act, I'm completely everything thats NOT how a woman is supposed to act. A black one nonetheless.

talk about how the old days were the best when women were housewives and men did the work and were in charge, your feminist class mates will love that

N.B I am not sexist before people start going on, they are mot MY views.

My views are that things are perfectly fine the way they are

A straight foreword Montage of where you live might work. My instructor said that most videos make a good representation if you film familiar places around your town and add some music to it.

as a personal narrative go around and interview what people think.

My video would be about how LAME so called "men," are portrayed in the media. It's impossible to turn on TV and see a man who's balls aren't in his woman's purse.

Except Doctor House.

This goes double for any of the Joss Whedon dreck that's out there.

Also, I know it doesn't count as he's not on modern television, but Captain Kirk is still the man.

You know, that's actually brilliant. The underlying message behind what's portrayed goes right along with today's media. Couldn't have made a better suggestion.

So, how YOU personally view gender? Well, seeing as how I am your hero (Right?!!), I have no qualms about imposing my sexist beliefs onto you.

Does it have to be live action? Well, if not, you can make a collage or whatever of some anime scenes or somethin' in which the Animu guys are doing that Punchy-fainty thing to the Anichicks... or somethin' along those lines. Oh! I just watched that Ikki Tousen show (piece of crap, it is), and whenever there was a chick fighting, her shirt would be ripped right down the middle... you know, in-between the flapjacks. And, they always get the panty shots. Hmm, or maybe you could even get some pictures of those chicks from that Eiken show... >_< Dammit!! I hate that show!!

Seriously, I'm not too creative, and I don't know how you feel about women (you hate them right?!!). And, I don't have just one fixed view of women. There are some real salty female dogs approximately 9" inches at the withers out there, and then there are some like my mom. And, Yours Truly, of course. Did I mention how Great I am? But, I think you should do the anime collage thingy (if that's an option), 'cause you're just the biggest (um, not literally...maybe) female Animu geek out there (there being Washington... Haha, you live in Washington!! :P ). I guess you don't have to use scenes of chicks with ZZZ cups getting the crap smacked out of them... I mean, you DON'T have to be cool. Dammnit, Videl, that's why you weren't allowed into my Dino Gang!! This is ridiculous. You reach in there, and you pull them Ovaries down and out. Then, you'll truly be a "Cool Girl." Hmm, maybe not a cool "girl," per se, but still pretty cool... in a grotesque kinda way.

I'm not a sexist or anything, but I think some Women get offended at media too easily.

They don't want to be treated differently than Men, yet they complain if certian things happen' to certain Females in some types of Media.

If anyone of you read "The Walking Dead." letter culums you will see many enraged females over a few lines of dialogue. And some other things I won't get into.

OR, I could take scenes from Death Proof, and show that with anime scenes. Have that black woman from Project A-ko or something!

Man, my friends were so wasted, and when I got back from the movie had to take care of them. I hope it was because she was drunk though. She had her hands all over the prize. (Prize being me.) I should do something on that.

Well personally, I think women today are stupid and I feel bad for men cause they have to deal with them.....

So I think you should really let loose at media today. I like Haro's idea, but I think it'd be funnier if you did in the style that Pink did her video for stupid girls. Go ahead and attack media, especially women.

No offense Feminists, (well, actaully yes, I do mean offense) but if you're going ***** and whine about how men are treating you unfairly, then why don't you first start with the women who let men treat them that way? Like all the chicks in the videos wearing nothing but a g-string?

Just a suggestion, you know?

Yeah, it's not like women have been systematically and socio-economically oppressed by male-dominated cultures for thousands of years or anything! If anything, women need to be punished for being raped and things like that. It's totally the woman's fault if she gets raped, even if she's a nun.

And those black people who were enslaved, they wouldn't have been enslaved if they weren't always letting rival african tribes attack their villages and sell them to white slave traders! It's their own fault they weren't smart or strong enough to fight back, right, Illusions-chan?

Erm, no.

Men have nothing to do with the treatment of the women in these videos. If anything, the women should have the full brunt of the criticism as they themselves are doing the acts of dancing around on video with virtually nothing on.

Reminds me of the case of Nelly being protested at Spellman College in Atlanta (a black all female college) for disrespecting black women. First off, no one put a gun to any of these women's heads and forced them to do the things that they do on video. So the onus is on the females to shape up.

THANK YOU! I was getting a little annoyed reading this and was getting ready to smack a couple people down. Now the urge has subsided, and I can rest easy in the knowledge that not everyone is completely ignorant to the socio-economic developments that lead groups, no matter which group you're speaking of, to the position they are currently in.
