someone give me a quick but good installation checklist for this OS...

Boot off the CD.
Check that everything is working: video, sound, network (wireless!), printer, scanner, camera, etc.
Press Install.
Read forum at their place.

Ubuntu is very good. But MEPIS (http://www.mepis.org/)can be easier for the beginner. They are not so stuck with totally free software.
