View Full Version : Korean singer Ivy getting sued by Square Enix

Ok, I found this out from two friends at Japankore.net:

Ok, recently a Korean pop singer name Ivy release a music video, which is a rip off from Advent Children church fight sequence, and Ivy is playing as Tifa. Know what is worse? She did the video without Square-Enix permission and she's making profit out of it, and that's never a good thing. Well, here's the excuse that the director of the video came up with:

"I couldn't find their numbers." was their excuse to this.

Anyways, Square is taking this issue to the court right now and they are suing that Korean music company for producing such things without permission. They're suing for plagiarism, copyright infringement, and defamation of character.

Oh and yea, I hate the video as well, Check it out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiM29NZtOeU

And they even got Turks wanna-B dancing in the background.

I found it pretty interesting, so I figure I would show it to you guys. :D

I don't know what disgusts me more, Squeenix busting a nut over an homage or the loser fanboy kid who made the post you quoted.

Seriously. And that has to be the worst excuse ("I couldn't find their numbers") for a copyright infringement I have ever heard.

It was a frigin parody. They even acknowledge that its based of AC in the video.

This isn't a rip-off as much as a try at a recreation. They just failed at getting the rights to it.

But I'm going with Prons. If she was Japanese, I bet there wouldn't be the same scale of reaction. It seems some Western fans who are "all into Japan" don't like Koreans because some Japanese don't like Koreans. Think for yourself.

My thoughts exactly. There tends to be strong anti-Korean sentiment in anime and video game fanboy circles. Unfortunately they don't know how hot your average Korean girl can be.

As far as the song goes, it is pretty lousy, even by Korean standards. I also found the video unwatchable.

Seconded. Why? For people like this:

Fanboys and fangirls.

The scene recreation itself was pretty good. I think Square Enix could let this one go though, this might actually serve as an advertisement for FFVII AC and increase Korean sales/imports of it.

No they shouldn't due to mere copyright infringeent. any business would do the same and sue if it happened to them. I don't think it's due to racism it more of a business call.

The first 5 seconds of that video had me laughing, and that's all I watched. What a COMPLETE rip. I'm glad Square sued.

The video was good, if not pointless. Doing the same thing with live actors as SE did with CG seems a bit daft to me. They get brownie points for the special fx, but lose them all by failing to secure the copyrights.

Also, the song sucked balls.

The most frightening part of this post is the fact he's ******** a brick over someone that's ripping off a crappy movie. And, the last few years, crappy game series.

Yes. That had to do with this topic.

The song would be ten times worse, not only would the video be a rip off, but the cameras and software used to shoot it would be bootleg as well as her clothing. And they'd sell DVDs of it on Canal street.

See, but Solid Snake's post wasn't a trolling attempt. There's bait in it, but it's not a trolling attempt.

And on our defense, the guy that got banned was trolling. Plain and simple. He came into the thread with no valid reason as to why the story sucked and the voice acting sucked. There's a difference. Then he goes off and starts flaming others and a mod, on top of all things.

I mean, you're welcome to try as well. You're the one that went ahead and picked out the LAST sentence. So what if he said that the FF series is crap(which it is these days), doesn't mean you gotta nitpick the last sentence and wanting to turn this into something bigger than what it is. At this point in time, your post before this one was a troll attempt.

Read the thread title. Are you on topic at all?

I don't think that the producers of this video thought square would go outothe way to sue, but that's a mistake on their part. It may seem excessive to some, but I can see why Square was offended (the music vid. sucked ***).

Let me quote you from another thread;

Dragoneer's Aria is a PSP rpg by Hitmaker. It wont be good.

Wow. Just, wow. You cry because I'm critisizing games that have been released, when you managed to do so with an unreleased game?

So trolling it is ok?

Yes. Aparently saying that I didn't like a game is trolling. You got me.

Though, in all technicality, I was baiting. If you hadn't noticed 90% of my posts bait. For some, unkown reason. This one being the nerd that the Topic Starter was quoting.

Wow, I must be the only person who liked the song.

But to be honest... I still say it's a matter of Japanese fans refusing to believe anything from any other asian country could possibly be good. But I figure everyone already knows my theory. No need for race trollin'.

Rocking Fur Elsie and Asian woman singing about tutti frutti = Win.

I actually interpreted this post to indicate that the threads where people knock FF are more popular than the threads that praise it.

At any rate, even IF my interpretation were the "correct" one, I'm not knocking FF. I liked Advent Children, but I thought the music video was stupid for the reasons I'd listed already.

Alright, fine. ALL of you guys are off-topic then, but who cares, you're still off topic, and that's against the rules.

Hopefully people will be more careful about referencing content like that (though I think this was more than a reference). It did follow along the lines of FFVIIAC a little too closely.

I hate alot of asian songs. I think female vocals in Japanese/Korean/Chinese can get a bit squawky (sound like they're blown up on helium). Sometimes, I think the guy vocals just get... weird. Still, I'd rather listen to Jrock or Krock rather than American crap.

Still, even so, this is one asian song that I can add to the list I don't like. It's just... weird.

Sadly the few asian artists with good vocals don't get as much recognition as the ones with bad vocals.

A lot of Asian Musicians, especially pop (well America too) have way too many effects on their voice.

Chousho
April 20th, 2007, 05:21 PM
Effects on their voices?
Do you mean extra additions, or corrective ones?

I would definitely agree on the last. I've noticed some of the singers I have on CD are great, but when I see a live performance of them, it seems a bit...
