View Full Version : Halko Momoi Famison 8BIT (old anime songs, 8bitized?)
Gibb

Apparently Halko has a new album coming out in a couple weeks called Famison 8BIT. It featurs her singing the vocals for a bunch of classic anime songs that have been remade in 8bit sound bytes. Sounds wacky indeed, but I've found there to be a couple wacky music fans on this forum, so I thought I'd share.
http://famison.com/
You can listen to little sample bits of the songs from the website, and the website itself has a rather nifty 8bit styled Flash interface that feels like an old Nintendo game.

Oh yeah... Play Asia sent me an email advertising this in the beginning of February. It didn't have any details at the time...
Grr... the site's too slow, or my connection's too slow, to let me hear any of the sample music...
Oh wait! There... Oh my god! That's the best thing in the universe ever! :w00t:

Well, I've placed my pre-order. :w00t:
I'm going completely mad for this album. I'm so looking forward to it! Just from the preview snippets, I know this is going to be a great listen. My favourite so far is the cover of the opening for 3000 leagues in search of mother (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noBFibUlB9s). Because it's just so appropriate; it sounds exactly like *going on a long journey in a classic RPG* music. This isn't a novelty track; it's proper artistic genre fusion, of two of my favourite genres of music (retro anime & retro videogame). I'm in love with this whole concept.
Also! I went out looking earlier today, and found there's a group of people who make cover versions of anime and game (and any other) songs as .nsf files (Nintendo sound files; so you can get a plugin for winamp or whatever and it plays them like a Famicom would, kind of the equivalent to midi files). Here's a link to an archive page (http://www.2a03.org/browse.php/2A03), music players are under the "software" section. There are nintendo-music cover versions of all sorts of things, from Cutey Honey to Hare Hare Yukai... my favourite so far is the cover of Masato Shimon's Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh19orN8Fm0) which starts off like the Final Fantasy 1 Fight music, then blends in the other melody...
I like this anisong-game fusion. ^_^
And.. yeah, Momoi Halko is the most geek-friendly idol *ever*. ^_^
I wonder if she's ever heard any of these things... there are a lot of covers of things she's been involved with, after all, like Komugi-chan, Soultaker, and so many covers of the Bottle Fairy theme...

Well... videogame music + classic anime songs + seiyuu idol singers... are three of my favourite things.
Put all three together in one album, and I'm going to be happy by default. ^_^
Plus there are karaoke versions in there so if I get sick of Momoi Haruko's singing, there's something to fall back onto. :naughty:
The music (aside from the singing) is *entirely* Famicom music. No drums added on top, no effects, no cleaning up of the sound, it's 100% pure Famicom sound chip goodness. It's the same as listening to someone singing karaoke to an 80s videogame, or NSF files. Very cute.
And she's singing the only vocally accurate cover of Hajimete no Chu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUKHetnXsfQ) I've ever heard! Oh it's FAR too accurate!

Just thought I'd mention, I read there's going to be a "Famison 8BIT STAGE2"! (comes out 2007/06/08)
So yay! Even more momoi-famison-ness! ^__^
After the first album, I'm looking forward to this...
Add that to "Momoi Halko Cover Best" that comes out 2007/06/20 and June is going to be like heaven for Momoi anison-cover fans. ^__^

It's got a short version of Lum's song in it... not quite as good as the momo-i version with Mario sound effects in it, though...

Ah, that's much better than my version! Thanks, Suiko Eiji! Mind if I borrow that tracklisting for my blog? (so I know where it is for when I get the album)
I'm particularly looking forward to Majokko Megu, Berubara & the 3 Horie Mitsuko songs in the middle (from Lun-Lun to Rocky Chuck), and the Suki Suki song. The Suki Suki song will work brilliantly as a NES song. ^_^

Dude... I said it was <3 already!
Perhaps I need to say that it was <3 <3 <3 or something? I dunno. The reason I can't take any more is because it's too damn good, and I still haven't recovered from the huge wave of awesome that was the first Famison album.

My copy just got despatched today!
So I get to hear the preview online now....
...ooooh, it's not as exciting as the first one... maybe because the clips all seem too short....
oh, that "dakedo, namida ga dechau... onna no ko damon..." is all wrong! ...oh! wait! since when was "Attack No 1" on this album? And the Saint Seiya song Pegasus Fantasy...? And Totoro?
Looks like they've changed their minds as to what's on there... no more Akubi Musume and Cat's Eye, aww...... I've have liked to hear those...

oh, that "dakedo, namida ga dechau... onna no ko damon..." is all wrong!
In what sense of the word is it "wrong"? Do you mean it's a bad cover, or is it just that (like me) you find something deeply disturbing about that particular song.

I mean... it's not deeply disturbing! She's saying it like an ordinary cheerful thing to say, and *not* like she's just been pelted with a ton of volleyballs by a cruel and unrelenting coach, and is on the verge of tears!
