It was explained quite clearly in the anime. At first, Kikyou wanted to kill Inuyasha because she thought he had betrayed her. Remember, Inuyasha and Kikyou had both been tricked by Naraku. Naraku disguised himself as Kikyou (remember, he can shapeshift) and tried to kill Inuyasha; and he disguised himself as Inuyasha and mortally wounded Kikyou. So, when Kikyou was first resurrected, she was still in the mindset of "I've been betrayed," and that was why she wanted to kill Inuyasha then.
After Kikyou learned that both she and Inuyasha had been tricked, she focused on getting her revenge on Naraku (by killing him, of course). But she also wanted to "keep" Inuyasha for herself by dragging him to hell with her. So any instances of Kikyou attempting to kill Inuyasha after episode 23 were her trying to take him to the underworld with her.
Does that make sense?

I have one thing to say to both of you: Go read the manga. As in, the latest chapters, past where the anime leaves off.

I don't think I'm allowed to post the links on AN, but most people look for the scanlations of the future chapters.
As for the main topic on hand, Mikadzuki covered it well enough.

WOW...a lot of Kikyo haters I see. One thing to say to that....the anime villianized her somewhat. I personally was never a Kikyo hater, and I always felt sorry for her because she met a tragic end and was brought back to life against her will.

I never liked the anime's treatment of Kikyo. It's like they really went out of their way to demonize her. I just saw the dubbed episode of the one with her and Kagome trapped in the cave and it simply further cements my ideas about her anime portrayal. Even when they try to make her nice, they somehow just get it wrong in some way I can't quite explain.
The closest the anime has really gotten to being an accurate portrayal of her (in new material like fillers or stuff that wasn't in the manga) was in the episode where she meets that thief that used to know Onigumo. Something about that episode felt right, but that's about it.

I personally never really saw much reason to hate Kikyou after her first few appearances. No matter how hard I try, I can't come up with any reasons to really dislike her.

Yes the knife scene in episode 48 was just unecessary, and the creators messed up what was supposed to be a nice moment. I'll also point to episode 43 (after the Kaze no Kizo was reflected at Inuyasha), where they had Kikyo on top of a tree while Inuyasha was laying there close to death. She says she's glad he's still alive, but she sure doesn't look it when she's all on top of a tree and Inuyasha is on the ground close to death. In the manga, she actually puts his head on her lap and hugs him. This leads me, as well as many other fans, to believe that the creators didn't favor her character at all. They messed her character up, and I think if they followed those scenes in the manga more closely, the majority of the fans wouldn't have so much hate for Kikyo. They'd probably hate Inuyasha's indecisiveness.
I was introduced to the anime first, but I always liked Kikyo's character. She was my favorite character when I first started watching the show because she's the tragic figure of the show. She's not my favorite anymore, but I do like her character because she goes on with her purpose despite the fact that she knows after her purpose is done she'll have to die again.

I was introduced to the anime first, and I think that might be part of the reason I hated Kikyou so much. Once I started reading the manga, I realized she wasn't quite as bad as the anime had made her out to be, although that still didn't make me like her; it just made me feel sorry for her, and redeemed her a bit in my eyes.
