Yup, born and raised in New York City until she started her singing career. She actually flopped in American before coming to Japan to become one of the most popular Japanese music artist ever.

Utada Hikaru is both Japanese and American as far as being raised. She spent alot of her childhood back and forth between Japan and America. However, I think she thinks of herself as being a bit more American than most fans would think.
