WTF AT THIS MUSICAL???

At my mum's advice I listened to a bit of it on the way home from seeing my dying great grandmother in Jersey. I made it to A Little Fall of Rain.

Seriously. Wtf at this musical? First, the guy goes in jail and then gets released and then the hooker chick dies...

There seems to be six different storylines. And Marius is a ****head.

If only it made sense like Phantom. Phantom makes a world of sense.

Discuss and help me make sense of this.

You forgot to lock this thread after that post...'cuz that basically ended it.

Les Miserables is based off the Victor Hugo novel of the same title. It takes place during the french revolution (if memory serves) and the play is divided into two distinct parts. Part 1 is the story about Jean Valjean, his escape, and his redemption, all the while he is being pursued by the diligent police officer Javert. At the same time, it's about Fontine (sp?) and her daughter Cosette. Fontine must become a prostitute, so that she can pay her daughter's bills. Her daughter is staying with an innkeeper and his wife, who force her to do chores and such, while Cosette's poor mother is paying her bills. She even has to go so far as to sell her hair.

Part 2 takes place about 10 years after part 1, in the middle of the french revolution. This focuses more on Cosette, Valjean, and Marius. Valjean has taken Cosette as his daughter, and basically is lying low to avoid the still-pursuing Javert. There's a bunch of other stuff that goes on, too, that I simply don't remember. I saw the play on stage once...that was the single best Musical experience of my life!

Awsome trashy pulp novels are written by people like H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Robert A. Heinlein. Abbreviations in names are very important when chooseing a great pulp author. Gaston Leroux has no abbreviation, no elder gods dreaming, no Hyborian Age, no Stranger in a Strange Land = auto and forever PHAIL

Alice, oh Alice. I had such faith in you! To see you desecrate Les Misérables with filthy american English fills my heart with sorrow.

Now, go learn French and hit that book until you know every line by heart. I might forgive you then.

Not only did I have to suffer through hours of slow death from being FORCED to watch the movie adaptation to this incredibly ridiculous musical, but the thought of someone actually wanting to get the cast recording makes STABBING MY EYES OUT WITH A WAX CRAYON sound exciting (and far less painful might I add). Alice, dear sweet, confused Alice....Guys and Dolls? Seriously? You liked Guys and Dolls but didn't like Les Miserables?

OK, if the male leads weren't total ****heads, I may have said I liked Les Mis a bit more than PotO.

However, take into consideration that:
1. Jean Valjean was considering letting another man go to jail for his crime.
2. Javert is 10x more psychotic than Erik. Then he commits suicide. Erik just goes under a cloak and disappears. Therefore Erik>>>>>Javert.
3. Marius is a worse fop than Raoul in that he fell in love with Cosette without getting to know her, while poor Eponine (sp?) loved him for years on end and he didn't even know it. All because Cosette is PRETTY.

Now, this:
1. Erik had good ****ing reason to be as psycho as he was. People who've only seen the movie and the musical don't really know it as well because let's face it: The main point of the musical is the music. Those who have read the novel know Erik's past, particularly if you've coughed up the $75-100 to get Phantom by Susan Kay. Come ON. Dead end job after dead end job, deformed face, unrequited love, being cooped up in a sewer system. While Javert just has a twisted view on right and wrong.
2. Christine almost sacrificed herself to save Raoul. As much as I hate Raoul, that was a ballsy thing to do. What would have happened if Erik would have believed Christine truly loved him? She would have been there. In a sewer system. With a deformed guy who has never been laid in his entire life. Who is a psycho murderer.
3. At least Raoul knew Christine before falling in love with her. They were childhood friends. Love at first sight my ***.

1. Yes, it was an internal struggle very well described by Hugo. Jean Valjean is a paragon of redemption, resitance, respect, tolerance, and takeing responsibility for your actions even if the system is rotten. The system also beat down Jean Valjean so much he is nearly incapable of haveing any emotional bonds (hence him stealing from the Bishop of Dinge and the scene later in the book were Thenadier tries to kidnap him).

2. Javert is a product of a rotten system and represents that system. He is a incarnation of cold bueacracy andis the opposite of Valjean. He is a parogon of keeping the status quo and takes the contrary opnion to Valean on Fantine. Valjean wants to alleviate her suffering while Javert wants to punish a irredeemable criminal in order to protect society. Haveing broken his own rules by being freed by Valjean during the riots he sees no alternative but to kill himself because his life essentialy became meaningless.

3. Marius is the only character in the novel who is well to do, he is sheltered and has very little contact with the outside world. His house his split between his father who was a colnele in Napoleans army (liberal) and his stounchly monarchist grandfather who raised him. He is the most innocent character in the novel, it keeps him from being cruel or cynical but makes him blind to the suffering of others.

You left out the second antagonist as well Thenadier.

Thenadier was so much of a ****head he was funny. It actually comes out and says, very basically "THIS GUY IS A PRICE GOUGING STINGY ****HEAD." in "Master of the House".

Because people consider Les Miserables a classic.

It is also used as a play for the girls to perform in Sakura Taisen 4 video game.

That's actually kind of cool.

And I've read the POTO novel. I strangely like novel version Erik better than Movie Erik(Well, the 2004 version anyway)...especially when he keeps calling the Persian, 'You big booby'...

On another side, I'm surprised that you know about Susan Isaacs novel, Alice. I only knew about it from a friend I used to talk to from another forum...

I love Kay's Phantom. I'm going to rent the Gaston Leroux novel from my library as soon as I pay my 4.50 fine.

They pretty much never enforce the fines here.
