Recently read an article on this place, anybody ever hear of it? I was astounded at the amount of money that is going into the place and how rapidly its developing.
50 years ago before oil was found there, the place was pretty much nothing.
Today, it has some of the most extravagent projects underway. The city is pumping excess of 50 billion into construction projects.
By 2010 this place will have:
The world's tallest skyscraper, largest mall, biggest theme park, longest indoor ski run, and the most luxurious underwater hotel (accessible via submarine train).
There will be a 60,000 resident area called the International City. Divided into nations where each place will have to reflect their national architectural style.
Hydropolis - The underwater hotel I mentioned will have domed ceilings over its suites so you can see the fish. Fog machines come equiped if you want to block the sun.
The World - 300 man made islands off the coast designed to look like a map of the world from above. Rod Stewart is rumored to have bought Great Britain for 30 million.
Dubailand - 3 billion square foot project that will include the biggest mall in the world, the worlds largest cruise ship, the above mentioned ski resort and theme park, and there will also be replicas of the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal, only they'll be 70ft taller (tower) and 150% larger (Taj) than the originals.

I could say the same to you for posting free advertising for the Dubai tourism bureau. Hence my inquiring as to what you wanted to hear from AN users about it.

I just think its interesting whats going on over there.
Maybe its the fact that I've always had an interest in architecture. The amount of excavating thats going on (especially in the water) is unheard of.

Dubai is the world's largest tourist trap. Like Navy Pier in Chicago, except as an entire city.
Anyway, the architecture in Dubai is interesting and they really are trying to diversify their economy away from oil, unlike say Saudi Arabia. They already have a track record of starting up large profitable corporations from scratch (Emirates airline, anyone?), and they are dumbing billions in tax write-offs to large companies to start large trading markets, in competition with say New York or London for financials. Personally, no opinion.
By the way, those man-made islands are supposedly very poorly constructed for how much they are selling them.

One of my close friends is Iranian and she showed me pics of Dubai, and I was astounded to find all these technologically advanced structures I've never even heard of nor is ever shown on Western television... Now, I feel like taking a trip there... She pretty much champions the Middle East (except for the women mistreatment)....
(Heck, I didn't even know it snows in Iran until she told me so?!?!)

I kno rite? They gotta run out sometime. And where do you think the balls GO?!?!? Into the ocean. Soon Dubai will be renowned for its tennis ball infested waters. They'll find a way to make money off of it...

Hmm....Palm Islands. Looks cool. The design in the architecture is nice. It's like looking into the future or something.
NYC still looks the same. 100 years and barely any changes. Although, midtown is supposed to be getting some sort of touchup to make it look futuristic. Oh wait, that doesn't benefit me. Only those dumbasses in Manhattan.

Not to burst your bubble, but that tennis court is actually a temporary conversion of the helipad. I believe they converted it as a publicity thing for the first Dubai Open or something.

As for how expensive it is to go there, I guess it all depends how much you're willing to spend. I'm assumings its just like Vegas to a larger degree. Affordable, but if you have the money to spend, they have the places to accomodate such desires.

Yeah, I know whats going on down there. Has anyone actually seen the inside of the famous hotel of theres? It's ridiculous. That's all that it can be described as. And there are artificial islands there that resemble the nations of the world. You can buy an island, it's so freaking awesome.
