View Full Version : 90's kids

Just because you were born in '97 doesn't mean you're a 90's kid.

It's not like you could remember the original Simpsons. I am sorry but three conscious years of the 90's just wont cut it.

You're a 90's kid if:

You can finish this [ice ice _ _ _ _ ]

You remember watching Doug, Ren & Stimpy, Pinky and the Brain, Bobby's World, Felix the Cat, The Tick...

AAAAAAAH Real Monsters!

You've ever ended a sentence with the word "PSYCHE!"

You just cant resist finishing this . . . "Iiiiiiin west philidelphia born and raised . . ."

You remember TGIF, Step by Step, Family Matters, Dinosaurs, and Boy Meets World.

You remember when it was actually worth getting up early
on a Saturday to watch cartoons.

You got super excited when it was Oregon Trail day in computer class at school.

You remember reading "Goosebumps"

You took plastic cartoon lunch boxes to school.

You still get the urge to say "NOT" after (almost) every sentence.

If you remember seeing hot tub bubbles make bubbly sounds before every music video on VH1.

when everything was settled by rock paper scissors..or bubble gum bubble gum in a dish...and even better daddy had a donkey inky binky bonky.

when cops and robbers was a daily activity.

when we played Hide and go seek until our legs grew numb.

when we used to obey our parents

You used to listen to the radio all day long just to record your FAVORITE song of ALL time.

"Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" was both a game and a TV game show.

Captain Planet. He's a Hero.

You knew that Kimberly, the pink ranger, and Tommy, the green ranger, were meant to be together.

You remember when Super Nintendos and Sega Genisis became popular.

You always wanted to send in a tape to America's Funniest Home Videos.

You remember watching Home Alone 1, 2 , and 3.

You remember watching The Magic School Bus, Wishbone, and Reading Rainbow on PBS.

You remember when Yo-Yos were cool.

You remember those Where's Waldo books.
(Did anyone ever find Waldo on the last page?)

You remember eating Warheads.
(And daring other kids to)

You remember watching the 1st Batman, Aladin, Ninja Turtles, and 3 Ninjas movies.

You remember Ring Pops.

You remember drinking Surge, and Tang.

If you remember when every thing was "da BOMB!"

When they made the new lunchables so that you could make pizza AND tacos.

You remember boom boxes vs. cd players.

Making those little paper fortune cookie things, and then predicting your life with them.

You played and/or collected "Pogs"

You had at least one Tamagotchi, GigaPet, or Nano and brought it everywhere.

You haven't always had a computer, and it was cool to have the internet, and Windows 95 was the best.

You watched the original cartoons of Rugrats, Power Rangers, and Ninja Turtles.

Michael Jordan was a king.

YIKES pencils and erasers were the stuff!

All your school supplies were "Lisa Frank" brand.

You remember when the new Beanie Babies and Talking Elmo were always sold out.

You collected those Beanie Babies.

Gak was the coolest stuff invented.

Lambchop's song never ended.

The old dollar bills.

Silver dollars, which were cool to have.

You remember a time before the WB.

You collected all the Troll dolls

If you even know what an original walkman is.

You remember wanting to sit on the orange Nickelodeon couch.

You've gotten creeped out by "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"

You know the Macarena by heart.

"Talk to the hand" . . . enough said

You always said, "Then why don't you marry it!"

You remember trying to collect all 150 original pokemon cards but never could and if you did you thought you were all that!

You know the significance of the number 23.

You went to McDonald's to play in the playplace.

You remember playing on merry go rounds at the playground.

Before the MySpace frenzy . . .

Before the Internet & text messaging . . .

Before Sidekicks & iPods . . .

Before MIKE JONES . . .

Before PlayStation2 or X-BOX . . .

Before Spongebob . . .

Back when you put off the 5 hours of homework you had every night.

When light up sneakers were cool.

When you rented VHS tapes, not DVDs.

When gas was $0.95 a gallon & Caller ID was a new thing.

When we recorded stuff on VCRs.

When we called the radio station to request songs to hear off of our walkmans.

Way back.

Before we realized all this would eventually disappear.

Who would have thought you'd miss the 90's so much!!!!!

So does any one remember these?

"Before the MySpace frenzy . . .

Before the Internet & text messaging . . ."

That's rather ironic, coming from mindless internet chain-mail drivel.

I remember every single one of those, and am quite content that I'll never see the likes of most ever again. Stick Stickly's grinning face on Nickelodeon television made me want to commit hara kiri, the smirking bastard (and that was before they unleashed the homicidal popsicle). Same goes for those pooping machines known as The Rugrats. Oregon Trail was boring. I wiped out my entire family with the bubonic plague and got sent to the office for laughing out loud in the school library at it (who wouldn't at the hilarious convulsion animation?). The Magic School Bus was brainwashing propaganda (newsflash, geniuses: buses don't have eyes). Where's Carmen San Diego? Hopefully a P.O.W. in Vietnam. Goosebumps were embarassing. I knew that R.L. Stine was running out of ideas by the time I'd gotten My Hairiest Adventure in the mail. I almost puked at the obscene cover. I thought that Doug Funnie's nose was a face tumor. That, and the fact that everybody was a sickly shade of green, blue, or purple, fits with my hypothesis of the setting being that of post-nuclear fallout.

Oh, and the Macarena? We had to square-dance to that smut in fifth grade. I kicked my partner in the vulva and got sent to the office. Mortal Kombat and Doom had nothing on the violent inflictions caused by that song.

Good riddance to that licensing-frenzy "nostalgia".

I remember Scat Man John.
And all of those other things as well.

VidelCoolGirl
February 5th, 2007, 01:49 AM
Scat Man john was awesome. "IMA SCAT MAN!!! DE DE DE DE Do DOP!"

I'm a 90's kid. I had Space Jam on VHS, I had my fair share of light up sneakers, and all I read was the "Babysitters Club. and Bearenstien Bears, and then later, Goosebumps. Monster Blood still freaks me out. I watch Nick all the time, and "Clarissa" was my idol. I hated Doug, but loved Legends of The Hidden Temple.

I still know the original Pokerap by heart.

TGIF Used to be cool. Anybody remember Teen Angel?

I had a Garfiled Lunch Box that had him eating on it. It was purple and had the words "Snarf and Gulp."

Hated Lisa Franks, but loved Benie Babies, and Gak. Gak was awesome. So were Nerfs....which still are cool. And Bongo bats...

Pogs are and will always be cool. Nobody could beat my slammer.

Favorite Commercial: Stick Stickly for the old Ziplock ads.

My mum wouldn't let me take it anywhere. My pet kept dying :'(

I was born in '93. I've seen most of the cartoons and my gram would sit me down to watch the others.
I had a tamigachi once. Good times, good times. *chucks the damn thing out the window*
Oregon Trail day was the best day ever. But my people kept dying when I got to the rafting part. The new Oregon Trail is boring.
And I watched GUTS AND LOTHT. I just didn't remember watching them until I saw Nick GaS and I was like "HEY! I REMEMBER THIS SHOW!"
*raises hand for having a Rugrats lunchbox*

I did a lot of cool stuff when I was a little kid.

Woah, I remember most of those.

I loved the 90's XD I remember getting up early every single morning with my sister to watch cartoons. The original Power Rangers is the best compared to the new weird Power Rangers -___-;

Captain Planet just rocked XD Pinky and the Brain ruled all. And AAAAAH Real Monsters was just....amazing. XD I remember a lot of things, my favourite memory probably when I was collecting Pokemon cards at school and playing with my Yo-Yo with my friends XD

I remember other cartoons like Earthworm Jim, which was just plain funny, and I love it when tv brings back old 90's shows because they think they can survive again. Not sure if Saved by the Bell was a 90's thing, but I remember watching it when I was little, then a few years later it appeared again. Earthworm Jim has come back recently too.

And now I suddenly wanna watch all those old shows -__-;

I cried because my Tamagotchi wouldn't shut up. I was a lousy owner, and I didn't know how to make it shut up. So my mum took the batteries out. Then I cried because it died. XD

That show was awesome.

Solid_Snake
February 5th, 2007, 06:40 AM
Is it wierd that I had something to do with EVERY single thing on that list?

And, if I'm not mistakin'. 'Pop up Video.' was the show in which VH1 ended it's videos with bubble sounds.

I was born in the 80's, but I am a 90's child fo' sho'.(20's...)

I miss pre Myspace/ Emo fad days. Sick of every young person in my town dressing like a queer.

Who remembers Pop-up video?

Yeah. The show with the trivia boxes over the music vids? I'm more an eighties kid than a nineties, having been born in '75, but damned if I don't remember most of the stuff in that list. I guess I must be an eternal child.

I tell ya what though, all of you nineties kids claiming to remember a day before the internet has got me all nostalgic. I remember the days before HOME COMPUTERS. Or at least before they were in any way common.

Then all of a sudden, Sinclair launched the ZX81, which people could actually afford, and before ya know it, it became normal to have a computer. The sheer range of different computers I used before my first IBM compatible PC (which was an 8086 XT clone) is mind-boggling.

LambChop's song? Do you mean...

This is the song that Never Ends
Yes, it goes and on my friends
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was
And, they continued singing it simply just because...

Didn't Charlie Horse sing that at the end? And, that song is stuck in my head, and I'll have to sing it ALL day.

Macarena lyrics? Didn't know it had lyrics...;) They made us dance to it in P.E., though. And, we had to learn the Achy Breaky Heart and the Electric Slide. I think they were all essentially the same dance...I can do the Macarena and the Electric Slide, but I don't remember the Achy Breaky. I was so uncoordinated....I'd miss the turns, bump into people, step on people's shoes... "Why are you facing me?" Oops!! I'm glad I learned the Electric Slide, though. You never know when people will start Electric Sliding. Like, we Electric Slided like three times in 12th Grade. Um, do they still make kids do those dances in schools nowadays?

And, you forgot about Double Dutch!! Well, kids were Double Dutching long before the '90s, but still...Interestingly enough, I couldn't DD to save my life. Shoot, I couldn't even turn the rope. -_-;

Also, you forgot about those Hand Slidey/Clappy Rhyming Games... I remember the one about the train falling off the tracks, and Slide Baby, and ROCKIN' ROBIN!!

"Fat and Skinny was in the bed/Fat rolled over and skinny was Dead/Mama called the Doctor and the Doctor said... Um, what did the Doctor say? Stupid fragmented memories.

I loved the '90s. I remember when I hit my sister in the head with that brick, and when I hit my cousin in the nose with that Charcoal, and when I got my legs popped (didn't even become a Cheerleader).

Now, who remembers the return of YoYos,
Which time? I'm sure they come back regularly every 8 years or so. I remember them being popular at one time due to a Coca-Cola promotion in which you could save ring-pulls for branded yo-yos, and that also applied to other Coca-Cola Company drinks. There was a whole range of different soft-drink yo-yos.

Does any one remember Headbangers Ball, 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, Matt Pinfield, Kennedy, The Real World San Francisco, Dan Cortez, Henry Rollins, and Julie Brown?

i remember a ton of this stuff. plus, the 90s formed the base for my future anime fandom. yes it was a time of editing of massive proportions, but many current anime fans started on 90s anime. face it, much of the girls are into it because of Sailor Moon. but i was born in 87, so i was kinda too young to know a bunch of this stuff.

and lets not forget the video games.....mmmmm, 16-bit greatness.:smokin: cartridges were $70. and Pogs...those things were awesome. then one day they just stopped:huh: and these were the days before reality TV, so thats definitely a plus. hell TV all around was better. i tried to watch the simpsons, but every time i did my mom shut off the TV:mad: WTF!? VHS was the way to watch movies. CDs and CD players were very expensive, and sold in wierd cases:lol: and having a playstation was a big thing.

there is so many reminders here.....but when it comes to music, i like rock 1990 and below (no hairbands)

You want my MegaFile. The ST isn't too hard to find, and there are better models than the plain old 1040 STe that I have. The Atari MegaFile hard drive is almost impossible to find, and I'm not sure how long this one will keep working. It's not like I use it all the time, though.

1984 birthdate allowed me to witness all these things. Batman TAS and Street Fighter were the 90's to me. Also, Wu Tang, Nas(Illmatic only), Biggie, Tupac, Snoop, Gang Starr, Craig Mack(One hit wonder, yo) and Two Live Crews "C'mon Baby(Doo Doo Brown)" was too good. I miss the 90's.

Also, the Yankees '98 team. Too broken. And let's not forget the greatness of Michael Jordan. Especially '96 Jordan. One of the most broken things I've ever seen. I rank him among ST Akuma for most broken.

I think I still have my pogs lying around somewhere, and when I saw the opening to Fresh Prince I almost sung the whole thing. Of course, in Western New York the 90's were a painful era. It's still a painful era for New York fans when it comes to Hockey and Football. Hell, it's just as painful for the Knicks fans. Although, the Rangers had that one year when they won with Gretzky. So, it's not all that bad.

Man, I remember the drug dealers when they used to hang out in front of my building and in the video store where I played Street Fighter at. Practicing and watching shady deals go down. Ah, memories. Also, beating them in all SF games was fun too. The 90's were good to me.

Anyone else remember Transformers G2? That was so cool!

I still watch episodes of the original Power Rangers on youtube occassionally. In fact, I even remember having dinner at a restaurant once with Jason Frank (Tommy Oliver, the Green/White Ranger), very cool guy

Back when the only music worth hating was the pop princess/boy band crap, and the rap was actually good!

Office Space, such an awesome movie...

BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD!!

Silver dollars, which were cool to have.

Back when you put off the 5 hours of homework you had every night.

So does any one remember these?

Why are you listing all this that's not unique to the 90s at all? You're obviously not aware that American popular culture, matter and reality existed before 1990.

Not to mention things like yo-yos have been around for thousands of years and were already popular in the US decades before the 1990s.

Tommy Smothers - Master of the Yo.

I don't know why anyone's going on about this 90's Scat Man, when the real Scat Man was the one and only Scat Man Crothers. Had to be more of a child of the 70's to appreciate that, though.

I apply for about half the list and am guilty of mass collecting Pokemon cards (between me and my brother, I think we had about 1000 cards, until I suddenly decided I hated Pokemon and gave away 450 cards, 11 "shinies" and 1 Charizard card which I found in the very last packet I bought) and striving to become a yo-yo master. Magic: The Gathering was also the rave among our elementary school classmates, but I never got into it.

The console of choice around here used to be the SNES and the Playstation before the N64 eclipsed those and our nights by bringing in Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. Ah, the hours we spent doing multiplayers and parties of those games.

Me and my friends used to stuff those Warheads by one's at first, then it became two and then three, then four. By then you could see the veins popping. Too bad they got toned down.

Even though I was never into T.V. or sports, I still recall many shows and specific moments on that list. And Space Jam is still a catchy tune.

Oh God, I feel old.

Man, Pokemon was fun when I was 12(1997). The games were pretty deep. Although they were full of glitches, they still were fun and competitive. Ah, the good ol' days of gaming.

Super Mario Kart for the SNES occupied a lot of my time during the early 90's. And I'll never forget my speedrun of Super Mario World when I was about to trade my SNES for a PSX. I beat the game in 13 minutes. Star World ftw.

Well, to quote from the Meat Loaf rant 'Wasted Youth':

"I REMEMBER EVERYTHING!! I remember every little thing, as if it happened only yesterday."

The 90's were far superior to these 00's. The only thing I didn't like about the 90's was the fact that it was the height of the grunge era. I despise grunge, did then and do now. If I could bring back 80's metal I would.

I think hiphop had a much better decade. With the whole East Coast vs. West Coast nonsense, hiphop was where it was at. Nas, Gang Starr, Wu-Tang, Biggie, Tupac, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and crapload of others becoming names in the industry. Then came the cashmoney nonsense and hiphop lost it's luster.

I suppose I'm a 90's kid. I was a 70's baby girl born in October 1978. I was 11 in the beginning of 1990, and I ended up turning 22 by 2000. My middle school and high school days were in the 90's (graduated in '98), so I obviously caught on with the style and pop culture of the time. I sure miss those days, I had so many great memories, but its part of the past now, so all we can do now is look forward and make new ones.

90's had the best music of any decade anyway, rock-wise. Then it all got flushed down the tube when the Smashing Pumpkins breathed their last breath.

While hiphop had its best days in the 90ties, rock music took a big dive when grunge got co-opted by record labels, and Pantera stepped up and became the torchbearer for metal in the US, while extreme metal bands Morbid Angel, Carcass, and Sepultura did the major label dance with Epic/Sony Records bringing forth some the best music from these relatively obscure bands while Korn ushered in the era of nu-metal.

Alternative rock had a good run with bands like the eels, Primitive Radio Gods, Presidents of the United States of America, Cake, Beck, Weezer, The Cranberries, Nada Surf and others. Around '96, you had an explosion in popularity for all forms of electronic music, leading MTV to famously declare "the guitar is dead" This of course was incorrect and its popularity in the US is relegated to the underground scenes, whereas in Europe it still enjoys commercial success.

The late 90ties brought us the return of the pop princess and boy bands while pop music was devoid of the experimentation and power that was 80's pop and the new wave/new romantic styles.

Joy Division

Joy Division is a late 70's band. Dissolved in 1980. Doesn't really count.

Their last album came out in 1980, so they could be counted as an 80's band.

I was a 90s kid, because I remember and did so many things on that list. I had an enormous collection of Lisa Frank stuff. I wish I still had all of it.

But, they suck. Without Ian Curtis they're lost puppies in a shed full of pitbulls.

No, sensei. Listen to them without thinking of Ian Curtis and they stand by themselves as innovators of techno and dark electronic music. They are more than Joy Division without Ian.

Perhaps. I've heard a few tracks before due to the ex gf. Wasn't my cup of tea. =/

I dig techno and stuff, but, it really isn't something I listen to a lot.

Have you heard the Warsaw Demos? The title implies just what it is. Their demos were a lot better than their regular stuff. It was a lot more raw than when Ian decided to add effects and whatnot. Very good stuff. Search for them. Ice Age is probably my favorite Joy Division demo from that set.

I own two copies of The Warsaw Demos, one on vinyl, one on CD. Yes Ice Age is made of win.

Happy! happy! joy! joy! happy! Happy! joy! joy! happy! happy! joy in my heart :D

The most memorable for me was when the time a friend bought a guns and roses casette tape>I don't know the album, but it was the yellow one< and I bought basketcase. The next day, we received the school newsletter. There was an article about "backmasking" and hidden messages in rock and metal music. A friend said that there was alot of evil messages in the guns and roses album. We used a mirror to look for 666 numbers, goat heads, etc. satanic stuff. We were planning to backmask it the nextday when a friend introduce us to Robotech Roleplaying.... :D those sure were goodtimes.

Uh-huh, I remember nearly everything on that list - except folk saying 'PSYCHE!' and the like.

Was born in the mid-80's meself. The first computer we had was a secondhand BBC Micro in '87, a new, more powerful model had come out of the BBC computer by then so you could get the older ones cheap. You had to plug the computer into your television and VHS player to operate it. All games for that were run from VHS tapes.

Later brought a Megadrive, with the Sonic games and Landstalker. Got a Amiga 500 cheap at that time too with loads of fun games.

My favourite cartoon was Sonic, the SatAm version: http://youtube.com/results?search_query=sonic+satam

It was when computer animation was really starting to come into its own.

Pre-2000 it was easier to find anime being shown on TV. There was a period when SKy came out that the Sci-fi channel would show anime movies every night, then once a week, and now: never.

John Major was in office then wasn't he - before 9 years of Tony.

I listen (and still do) to the Stone Roses and the Manic Street Preachers. Brit pop was... popular! Blur, Oasis, Primal Scream - I remember all that hype about Ibiza as well, and all the songs written about it - was that the late 90's tho'? The M25 was a ring of E and ravers wasn't it?!

As for 23... Captain Clark welcomes you aboard.

Hail Eris!
and on a unrelated note:
Hail Bob!

Legit. I know almost all of these, waking up for cartoons was the most awesome though out of all of these, now I just waste my day away because I'm up to rediculous times like 3-4-5AM on Fridays. :/
