Well, in my life, up to now, I've always felt that J-music and classical were the only ways to go (maybe some jazz in there, but only a little). Then when I was struggling with my music to day I realized. I am a freaking musician, I have to listen to all kinds of music to be the best and most prolific composer. So... with this new potential unlocked, I need suggestions! Give me some music to pick up! (Keep in mind, I hate every kind of music othen the latters, so don't give me anything too extreme, I need to snake my way in at first). Also, I want music. Not crap. Don't give me crap. For me, crap is anything that is:

Too loud.

Heavy metal (you know with the screaming)

To many overtones (too much distortion)

Serialism (You know, that's the stuff that avoids tonal center and goes off of dissonance)

Songs with scary/stupid/odd lyrics (Stupid might be ok actually)

OK. Seriously guys, please help. I'm also getting some people I know to give me mixed CDs of their faves so I can add them to my itunes.

 well then i suppose the Beatles are out since you don't want tonality distortion.

Green day is out becuase of the lyrics (No matter how awesome they are.)

Linkin Park's out for the Distortion factor.

System of a Down is out for the lyrics and some distortion.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are in nothing wrong with them except a little perversion in there earlier albums.

you could try Arosmith, Pink Floyd, Led Zeplin, Queen, other's below the 80s level.

A little distortion is ok, just not too much. And I studied the Beetles' music back in Music History.

Are you trying to say everything after the 80s is full of alot of screaming and distortion!? NO!!! I was hoping I could get into some really cool bands... I might have to adjust my tastes a little (force myself to suffer).

Lol Green day doesn't scream, they just riot and complain about which side of the road there girl friend live on. And a bunch of Punk stuff. I wont be dragged into calling it Emo.

Linkin Park is good. i love the lyrics and the sounds are so ingenious.

I've been listening to an odd band recently, named Old Crow Medicine Show, basically they play folk music, and stuff like Bob Dillon and the like, the irony is they formed in 2000 and they play stuff relating to Civil war times. Working for the Union the trade shift between the Iron Horse (train) and the boating industry. if you like folk music go listen to them.

eh the best stuff is what you find interesting to your ears. My advice is to listen to the radio, modern rock type stuff. if you like what you hear go buy the album.

Actually, some of the guys from yellowcard used to go to my HS. I didn't really KNOW them much but I wish I had got to knw em' a bit more. Still, I used to listen to their music, but it didn't inspire me much to do anything... usually the popular bands don't give me any ideas. And as for folk music... I think all American folk music is pretty much trash... sorry. I'll listen regardless though. I'm pretty eager at this point.

Queensryche > DragonForce.

Dforce is like a wannabe progressive metal band, and they don't even play progressive. All their songs sound the same.

Queensryche wins.

Get Metallica's S&M album, a pleasent combo of Metallica and a live symphony orchestra.

Queen, PINK FLOYD, classic Rolling Stones, Styx, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, the Eagles, DAVID BOWIE, Blue Oyster Cult. I strongly suggest Pink Floyd, they use a lot of effects, sure, but their music is quite... musical?

QFT. Call of the Ctulu has never sounded better.

I also recommend Metallica's "black" album (just titled metallica, but has a solid-black cover with a barely-visible rattlesnake on it), and Load.

I recommend Rob Zombie. I think you would like his work because it has a very unique sound. Also, it varies the gammet in that it can be fast-paced and metal, to slow and creepy, with a couple songs that have an odd tempo. You may not like Rob Zombie because some (all?) of his lyrics are non-sensical or else very creepy. I like Zombie for his sound, not his message. If you take this artist suggestion, I recommend Hellbilly Deluxe, and the "Past Present and Future" album, which is a greatest-hits compilation.

I also recommend Franz Ferdinand. Again, unique sound that has a "fun" theme, versus the creepy angle that Zombie approaches. Franz is 90% inoffensive, and features nothing metal, nor screaming.

Also, try these Tidus:

Simon and Garfunkel
John Lennon (by himself, or with Yoko...I don't care. He has some really great songs that shouldn't be missed.)
John Denver (now, most people write him off because he sounds a little bit country. But you know what? The man was a great singer, and his voice is incredible. Really sincere, very powerful tenor.)
Queen, as said before. PICK. THIS. UP. NOW.
The Carpenters (don't laugh until you try it)
Kansas (Dust in the Wind, baby. Great group)
Chicago (Again, don't laugh until you try it)
The Bangles (OMG, OMG OMG....Eternal Flame is *so* my favorite song to sing karaoke to!)
Bee Gees (Haha, don't laugh at me for this--they are a great group)

My taste in music is awesome but I'm a little pretentious, as you can see.

XTC. Early punk with organs in it, then the albums start to get more and rock/folk/experimental.
The Streets. Lighter British Hip-Hop/rap/dance.
Pizzicato Five. Japanese R+B/Dance/Pop/Experimental/Classical(?) duo.
The Specials/Special A.K.A. Masters of British reggae/ska/early punk rock.
Richard Thompson. Folk-Rocker and probably one of the greatest guitarists of all time(?).
Devo. Don't let 'Whip It' fool you! Ranges from early, heavy sythesized punk to a much lighter affair.
The Clash. Really talented punk/rock band that everyone knows already.
NWA. You wanted to expand your horizons a little more? Early gangsta rap. It's pretty smart though.
Buttersprites. Only have one album out so far but it's great. Japanese/American girl band, with an accordian or two.
TsuShiMaMiRe. Same as above except a trio with no accordians. Awesome bass player.
Primus. Best bass player ever IMO. Funky Metal.
Tom Waits. Everything. He sings with a raspy/gargly/scratchy/bassy voice that sounds so good.
Ian Dury & The Blockheads. Unsung hero of late 60s rock'n'roll and the best lyricist of all time.
Frank Zappa. Experimental rock with over-the-top solos, outstanding compositions, lots of different instruments. Extremely funny to boot.
Sublime. Great band, great singer. Ranges from hip hop to ska to metal.
Dean Martin. Badass easy listening vocalist.
Shonen Knife. Talented punk/rock girl group from Japan. A little squeaky, but that never hurt anybody.
Liz Phair. Check her out before her last two albums. Pretty innovative acoustic/vocals stuff.

I do. I buy OSTs for every game I can get my hands on (Shadow Hearts 2 OST rocks). Movie scores bore me. IT makes me sad that the classical style has been reduced to program music...

Besides, I'm trying to get into music with lyrics. Classical is the most beautiful type of music in my humble opinion. I love instrumental... but to become a completely well-rounded musician I have to listen to all types of music. DOn't worry, I know what the good stuff is, now I'm trying to listen to the stuff I ignore (unfortunately, the music is ignore is the type that brings fame and big bucks). I realized that no matter how good I become at classical music, I'll never get the recognition I deserve for killing myself in front of the keyboard all day.

Oh yea... I picked about 15 Alicia Keys songs. They're pretty ok, I'm also trying to get into some Mary J., but it sounds HORRIBLE.

This sounds interesting. I'm actually interested. Unfortunately, nothing yet has satified me ask much as my J-music (and definately not classical). I don't think anything will, but I just need to experience all of these different types of music, so I can absorb it.

You didn't seem to request non english music. Since you like Jpop, I'm sure you're not demanding the music to be in a language you understand. I'll suggest a variety of must hear spanish music and some good english music not mentioned yet.

Spanish rock:

- Cafe Tacuba (The band members live in my area. I occasionally see some of them in the street)
- Mana (I don't like them that much, but a lot of people do even though they haven't brought a new album in ages)
- Los fabulosos Cadillacs (Don't underestimate this group by hearing that idiotic song "Matador"; that's like saying Creep is the best song of Radiohead)
- Mago de Oz (Weird lyrics and some songs are pretty metal, but I like this celtic rock band very much)
- Juanes
- Moenia
- La cuca (Crazy lyrics and maybe a bit too metal for your taste, but a good 90's band)
- Los Tres (A Chilean band, I've only heard the song "La Torre de Babel" which is a great song)

Pop or romantic:

- Luis Miguel (Hate the man and all his songs seem the same, but you should try it out at least. He's known as a pop idol/wannabe sex god in Mexico. And no, I don't think his gap makes him hunky).
- Tiziano Ferro (Who cares if he thinks mexican women are unattractive! Hate the person, don't hate his music).
- Uff (J/K. Though some songs are pretty decent for this generic boy band)
- Armando Manzanero
- Yahir (Some songs are pretty good even though his career isn't going anywhere)
- Eros Ramazotti (Most annoying nasal voice ever, but his songs are really nice)
- Alex Ubago
- Alejandro Sanz (Some songs are good, others suck. I hate the songs he duos with Sahira, yeggh).
- Andrea Bocelli
- Fey (Out of fashion and her new album sucks, but her old stuff is good)
- Sentidos Opuestos
- OV7

We all know you wanna hear grupero/cumbia music (don't complain, you said you wanted to try a bit of every genre):

- Celia Cruz
- Banda El Recodo (I don't like this kind of music myself, but the lead singer has a good voice. The less grupero-ish versions of some of their songs sound very good)
- Daddy Yankee (Because we all know you're dying to hear La Gasolina)
- Selena (Dead for almost 15 years and her Tex-mex style music is still very popular)

English not yet mentioned:

Ray Charles
Judy Collins
Phil Collins (Laugh if you like, but I like his music)
Sting
Soundgarden
I don't like country too much myself, but I like some stuff by Kenny Rogers
Beastie Boys
Rage Against the Machine
Billy Joel

----

So many music bands I've never heard of in this thread!!! I really should try some of this music out for myself.

I'd recommend BGMs. I mean, it could be from any show you watch -- anime or movies, whichever you like. If you're tired of the usual, go instrumental. It helps you get away from all the musical mediocrity and ruckus that's present today. At least you don't have to lean juz into J-music. Instrumentals can be in any genre you can think of, that way you won't be leaning to any one genre and well, appreciate music much more.

Thanks everyone. I got alot of stuff I can incorparate. I'm pretty sure the music I've checked out will lead me on to other stuff... and I'll end up with a pretty broad library of music.

Chris de Burgh. His lyrics are brilliant and his music great. My personal favourites are Lonely Sky, and Transmission Ends.

I've heard a little Kings of Leon, and I've liked what I heard (as far as the first album "Youth and Young manhood").
Another recommendation: John Mayer.
