View Full Version : The Consequence of Bittorrent?

I've been doing everything I possibly could to cure my poor computer proformence this past week. From running norton & spyware programs to cleaning out my whole computer, nothing works but I thought of one thing that might be the source of my problems. Bittorrent.

Im not sure if my theory is correct or not, but that is why I'm posting here to share opinions with you. I check my virtual memory today by pressing ctrl+alt+del and I found that bittorrent is taking up alot of it. I then went to google and found that the longer you leave a application open (IE, Foxfire, msn, bittorrent, etc.) the larger amounts of virtual memory it takes up. Then I ask a friend and he also said that the less VM you have the problem im having right now usually occurs. So is he right? Does leaving on Bittorrent on for 3 nights straight affect your computer this bad? Share your opinions and your experiences with bittorrent or computer proformence in general because Im getting so !@#$ing pissed off for paying so much for high speed internet when Im not even having fast internet.

Edit: Lol, I've been whining about my problem when I havent even told you what pr0blem im having lol..

When I click on the internet explorer shortcut on my desktop, it takes 10 seconds or more for the acual Internet window to pop up. So i'd be pointlessly staring at my Totoro wallpaper for 10 seconds until some white window finally pops up and magically transforms into the AN homepage. *sigh* slow comp proformence suX0rz.

You perform Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter at least once a week, correct?

negative, but I believe even doing that I still wont be able to resolve my problems.

restart your comuter (and don't start BT) and try running IE. Also give us the ETA on other programs that don't use an internet connection and your computer specs.

Some BT programs hog resources. Others don't. One more reason I like uTorrent. Or whatever the hell that little Greek symbol is supposed to stand for in the Roman alphabet.

It usually means micro. One µmetre is = 1/1,000,000th of a metre. I also use µTorrent, and for the same reasons. I used to use Azureus, but this has most of the same features but much lower resource consumption.

 ya I use utorrent too.

Maybe you should ditch IE too, I'm using Firefox. Firefox uses more memory (Although I'm convinced it dosen't actually use it) but runs smoother than IE.

Defrag works.

switch to simba, linux or even gentoo. Simple and less problems then windows.

I did it like a million times yesterday, and my anime is @ 75% but downloading at a incredibly slow rate so after thats done, im switching to uTorrent.

okok, I just switched to mozilla firefox and my internet now is much faster than before, still not upto 100% but its at about 85% you think it was internet explorer's problem? Im still not 100% convinced it's 100% IE's problem becasue i never had any problems with it before but give some reasons for this.

Are you supposed to? Mine has never been defragmented and we've owned it for almost 2 years now.... Ooh, that's probably bad, isn't it?

Your browser has nothing to do with torrent speeds nor does disk cleanup or defrag.

many factors can cause slow torrent speeds.

-Client
-Seeds/peer speeds
-ports
etc.

IE is still ****.

Try another torrent program. I've seen first hand that certain ones can make your internet slow down.

If you're satisfied with your computer speed, there's no reason to. Try it sometime and see how much it makes a difference.

Ramen Boy, I've been trying to figure out what your problem is, but you've never given us your computers specs.

I'm sure I know what the problem is, as I've had this as well.

Do you have a router or firewall? I'm betting you're NAT'd. There are a couple ways to get around this. Set up a DMZ, forward your ports, or just not use the firewall when you download (not recommended).

DMZ Info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demilitarized_zone_%28computing%29)
Google for "Setting up a DMZ" (http://www.google.com/search?q=setting+up+a+dmz)
Google for "Port Forwarding" (http://www.google.com/search?q=port+forwarding)

For more help, I'd need to know what your router is. For Example: Linksys, Dlink, Netgear?
