I noticed that symbols that are supposed to be Japanese just appear as question marks, why is that? They appear as Japanese symbols on the school computers, but not on my machine.

Am I missing some type of file? If so, is there anywhere I could download these files?

You have a Japanese language pack installed? If not, get it from the Microsoft site.

^Isn't my computer supposed to come with the Japanese langauge pack? I didn't think you had to download them all.

It would be easier just to pull out an install CD and pull the files from that since the East Asian Pack on the site is only for Microsoft Office.

What sites are you trying to view, Jonn?

you most likly do not have that font loaded on your computer. If you are trying Japanese on your computer you may need a program to do it. I know that I have to use a program when I type russian.

I'm not trying to learn the language, but I just find it annoying when text appears as "?" marks.

Not sites, just sometimes people have Japanese in their signature and profile and it always comes up as ? marks. Kind of annoying, I was just hoping someone could link me to something I had to download.

I'd use the CD, but I've misplaced it (XP is my OS).

Just download the language pack then. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24a66277-cd9f-4332-a6f1-52b85a6470bd&displaylang=en)

Yay! It worked! That's all I wanted, and everything works fine now. Thanks.^_^

Is the language pack compatible with only IE or can I view the text with Firefox? I've been having the same problem as Jonn for a while and, just like him, it's getting annoying. =/

To think, the most trivial stuff is usually the most annoying.

Works on both Firefox and IE for me.

shift_JIS works with every browser to make the UTF-8 to shift_JIS switches when your browser forces Western ISO encoding. It should work with every browser, even one you made yourself.

It works fine with just about any browser. It will actually enable Japanese characters in other applications than your web browser too. Not all applications, of course, but you can Notepad in Japanese if you want.

Hmmm.....does it have to be Office XP only? Because I have regular Windows XP.

The regular Windows XP Home Edition contains these files. You need to find "Regional and Language Settings" in your Control Panel, and then on the "Language" tab, you should check the box that says "Install files for East Asian Languages".

You'll need your Windows XP CD and you will probably need to reboot.

You may not need the language pack at all. Sometimes it is an encoding issue. If you go up to View(in your browser) and then encoding, you can mess with it until it works. I have IE7 so I wouldn't know where to look in Firefox, sorry.

I did it without the CD. Thank you for the directions, sir.

Videl :'( Thank you...
Everytime I ask that question everyone says 'find the magic CD' I don't know where it is! Yet another annoyance gone!

Hmmm.....mines is giving me a problem with MS Word. It asks me to insert the disc everytime I open up MS Word. I have to find the MS Office disc. Which I think I can't find. Thank you MS. I hate you. Bastards. I hope I can find the disc.

If you just want to view the japanese text in websites and such then you can try my above suggestion. I have never installed a language pack yet I have always been able to view Japanese text with no problems. If you still want to do it that way, then I believe you can order a replacement disc from Microsoft. Also you may be able to download the files as an optional update from Microsoft Update. I have not used that service personally but it seems as if it would have what you are looking for.
