So I just got set up with Comcast and they set up a new router, a Netgear CG814WG, which so far I'm really not liking. The people who came to set it up didn't seem to have any idea what they were doing and it took them hours to hook the damn thing up. I probably could have done a better job myself. Anyway, once the thing was set up I did the first thing I always do with new routers: I went in to change the password. That's where the trouble comes in.

By default the username is comcast, and the password 1234. I went in, changed the password and now can't get in at all with the new password I set up. It's frustrating me to no end. I'm 100% positive that I set the password right and that I'm putting it in right. The only thing I can think of is that it reset the username to something, too, but I've tried the usual: comcast, admin, administrator, blank, etc. So I was wondering if anyone here has dealed with this router before, and might be able to help me find out what the hell happened. Google was no help, and I figured I'd ask around before calling tech support, waiting on hold and talking to an idiot.

Is there any kind of a master reset button on this router? If so, that will restore the factory default settings, which includes the username and password.

The information in the book I received was very basic and didn't help. I tried resetting the router, but it doesn't seem to be a master reset. I'm at a complete loss. I'll try fiddling around a little more before giving in and calling tech support. Thanks for the suggestions.

Most routers have a hole that you can fit a paperclip in (it's about the size of 2 or 3 in width ala - O).

Look for that small hole, and stick a paperclip in there for about 45 seconds. When you get done pressing the little button inside, take out the paperclip and it should be reset.

Now, take a gander at

I recommend using the end of a plastic comb or a toothpick >_> You shouldnt put anything metal into a device hooked up to a computer-powered input.

Perfectly safe. The hole is designed to be used in that manner, and as such is positioned away from anything that could lead to a short. The reason the reset switch is hidden away like this is in order to prevent accidental resets.
