View Full Version : The Origin of Our Names
GreatNekoKoneko
January 24th, 2007, 04:07 PM
...no. im not talking about our REAL names. god forbid you guys find out my real name. anyway, here's another thread where some posters can stop by and drop some info on how they came up with their forum names.
as for me, it all started with my fixation with AzuDaioh's NekoKoneko, you know, that stuffed toy of 2 cats on top of each other. since someone already has the said monicker in the internets, i decided to add "great" to it. just to make it different. hence, GreatNekoKoneko. the name has stuck ever since.
what's your story?
Haro!
January 24th, 2007, 04:13 PM
I was previously known as Epyon followed by something I cannot recall. That was because for several years my AIM name was Epyon. Then it changed to Haro! because I think Haro from Gundam has a nice combination of cute and annoying.

Sushikins
January 24th, 2007, 04:18 PM
It's my nickname, although now my friends call me just Sushi. There are two other variations I'll use if Sushi-X is taken somewhere, Kiryu-Sushi-X and Nanaya-Sushi-X.
Sendo Takeshi
January 24th, 2007, 04:21 PM
Well, before, I was the legendary Deathscythe. It basically came from Gundam Wing. At the time CN started airing it and I fell in love with the DS design and the fact that it had a scythe. That made it extra cool in my eyes. I was 14 at the time(assuming it aired in 1999). So, you know, young minds get easily influenced by such things. I thought it was a cool name. I still use it on SRK till this day because that name started there and it became quite famous.
That's a name I miss on these boards. It struck fear to the hearts of nerds and geeks everywhere. That was a fine name. And then, change decided to set in. So, a few weeks ago I decided to change it to Sendo Takeshi because over the time I started to become a HUGE Hajime no Ippo fan. And the discovery of Reidar's avatar site made me change the name to match the avatar. The avatar symbolizes my love for fighting games(to me at least) because it has Sendo in a victory pose. And when it comes to fighting games, it's all about winning.
Deathscythe will forever remain a part of the history of this site. This was name that took down Richi(Sony Fanboy #1) once and for all. Now I've become the Smasher. *goes off to smash*

Yup. I changed the name recently(as explained in that long drawnout essay). I kinda got tired of it(here at least).

^^ yeah, it was only a few weeks ago you were deathscythe...
anyways, back in my starcraft playing days, my friend had a screen name swedishchicken. which was funny at the time because he was neither swedish, nor did he like chicken very much. so we made our own clan with nationalities and species of birds. germanturkey, norweigianpigeon, spanishcockatail... etc..
it just kinda stuck
The Million Dollar Prons
January 24th, 2007, 04:26 PM
Sadly the story behind my name isn't as exciting as everyone helped, you know, no blood lineage or anything. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prawns)
I'm actually the second person to use the name Prons on the Internet, when I registered my AIM name, "Prons," was taken, so I made a different Prons name (I started with Prons103, because I liked ending everything with "one-oh-three," and if I remember right I used it for like twenty years before registering Mobile Suit Prons) by sheer irony, I did meet the original "Prons," one day, he, like me, is a Vietnam War veteran in his mid-50's.
I also was awarded the title "Big Boss Prons," from the United States Government, for "tappin'," a Communist woman, the first Westerner to do such a thing since Jon Lennon.
Soluzar
January 24th, 2007, 04:30 PM
I've been using Soluzar as my alias online since at least 1997. I just needed to come up with something for a username one time, and I took this one from the surname of a character in a sci-fi novel I was reading at the time. It stuck. Here I am, ten years later, still Soluzar.
I didn't like the character or the book that much at the time, and I care a lot less now. It just struck me as cool. I don't spell it the same way. He was "Solusar" and I prefer my version. Plus this is like my 'first name', although Soluzar does not have a surname.

I loved Rurouni Kenshin and Cowboy Bebop. :/
Not exciting.
But over the year or two, I've grown away from anime and manga for some reason or another...if I changed my name it would be something music or Jmusic relasted, since that's what I'm into nowadays...
probably pillows related, for obvious reasons.
Reidar
January 24th, 2007, 04:32 PM
I was slaughtering a colony of hippies one day when I noticed that their dismembered organs laying on the ground spelled out, "Anthropophaginian". It suddenly dawned on me that when the letters were unscrambled and an "e" and a "d" were added, it spelled out "Reidar" after omitting the unnecessary items. Divine intervention or mere coincidence?
Jon
January 24th, 2007, 04:34 PM
Well, my story is boring. I used to be ThatJonKid2009, switched to ThatJonKid, and then Jonn.
Why I chose Jonn? Because Jon was already taken. So I just added a "n" at the end. Lame I know.
This was name that took down Richi(Sony Fanboy #1) once and for all.
Silly Rah...I mean Richi. Man that was hilarious.

No, remember that song, Back in the USSR? Even though it was written by McArtney, still:
Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia's always on my my my my my my my my my mind
The second verse is also sexual:
Oh, show me round your snow peaked
mountain way down south
Take me to you daddy's farm
Let me hear you balalaika's ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
Except I think I won because mine are actually IN the party. AM I doing it right?

You turned Richi into Galactus?
Me and Richi are actually quite similar in that we are both Sony fanboys, and (if I'm not mistaken) are both some combination of Mexican and Japanese. I think we may in fact be clones and may not know which is the real one, kinda like that Spiderman arc. I'm now thinking of changing my name to RichiReborn or something of the sort.
Lord Timaeus
January 24th, 2007, 04:55 PM
This is actually the third name I've used on AN. The first was my original username, ORANGE-KUN, which derived from two of my favorite franchises at the time, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and NINOMIYA-KUN. I ditched that name after certain events I'd rather not discuss, and changed it to Lord Kuroishi. That name was intended to be a combination of the Japanese words for "black" and "death;" the "Lord" part was just there as filler to make it sound cooler.
Now my current username is derived from an RPG character I developed back when there were chat threads on AN, which in turn was derived from (sadly) a Yu-Gi-Oh card from the extra-cheesy Doma arc. Once the RPG died down after one of the major players left, I began to use the name "Lord Timaeus" in other forums as a homage to that character. So I figured if I was Lord Timaeus everywhere else, I might as well change my name here.

I don't know, but you're a lot smarter than Richi. That's the difference, Richi tended to pull "facts" from his arse.
And I found the link to where the debate was. Starts on post #59 I believe:

let's see the long list of names i've had.
1st. was Old Ape Face, (in reference to the chief of section 9 Amirmaki of Ghost in the shell, as his nick name.)
2nd. i got a little taste of Samurai Deeper Kyo, and loved it, loved the name and his character, and so i was Kyo Dono for a number of months...
Until i read about another character in SDK, Sanada Yukimura, who is a very femenistic yet horrifyingly strong leader of the city of Kyoto.

I'm thinking of using an original name this time, Neko God? Na too high and mighty. Prince Neko? has has a nice ring to it but it sounds too out of place for me. NekoWannabe? na, too annoying. Kainshi? that's my Wow Paladin Blood Elf's name. it sounds too much like Kenshin. OrangoTang. a pun on words? a mix of the orange drink and the ape. Noobsinhower? (my brother uses Dubesinhower all the time. ROFLCHOPTER) Elfdragqueen666. Hmmm no too odd.

My name is blackknight because Black Knight was already taken. As for why I chose it, its because the Black Knight is my favorite character in the greatest movie ever made, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. His is a motivational story, teaching you to fight on no matter what the odds.
Or it could just be a really good laugh. Take your pick.
King Arthur: Look you stupid bastard, you've got no arms left!
Black Knight: Yes I have.
KA: Look!
BK: Just a flesh wound.

YuYu Hakusho was my favorite anime when I joined. Originally, I needed a name for my email account, so I could host my YYH fansite on geocities. I picked the two characters I thought were the coolest at the time, which were Hiei and Kurama. I usually used a number, 23 or 25, but the number 7 is awesome, so 27.
Though Im not much into Hakusho anymore (though it is still a good anime), so it can be referenced from the two mountains in Japan . . .

When ever I can fit it I'm Katayoku no Tenshi.

This is an old name of mine... I think the "Ryo" part is a reference to Ryo Hazuki of the Shenmue games, but I'm not sure. "TD" is short for "the Demon". I have no idea why I kept it. It sounded cool at the time, I guess. -_-;

Undrave
January 25th, 2007, 10:29 AM
My names come from great legends found all across the world that speak of a powerful creature...
Not really no... I totally made it up.
'Undrave' is short for, believe it or not, 'ThunderRaven'. (thUNDerRAVEn)
For quite a while I was known as HellRavenmon but after Tamers came off the air I decided to break out of the Digimon dependance so to speak and go for a real original name. The raven being a sort of totem animal for me I decided I had to fit that somewhere. A thunderraven is like a special type of thunderbird I invented... it's also got a complex origin in my head that has something to do with my love for neketsu stories like Saint Seiya but I won't bore you with my weird and complex thought pattern.
How I got around to cutting those specific letters in 'ThunderRaven' I'm not quite sure.
Now I use it everywhere on the net! On another board I'm known as 'Undrave Limito' but I kept the 'Undrave' part.
Holy Knight
January 25th, 2007, 02:06 PM
I'm a great lover of irony. About three years ago I was obsessed with Hellsing and the awesomeness of Alucard. I considered his way of acting and found it to be quite similar to a Knight in some respects. Where the irony comes in is the "Holy" part. Hence, I had an avatar of Alucard and the name "Holy Knight" to go with it.
To follow suit, I now have an avatar of Yagami Light, who is definitely no Knight and certainly not holy.

Well, yes. But, blaxploitation was the dopeness back in the 70's. And it was hilarity at its finest.

Char Aznable in Char's Counterattack.
I was watching Zeta, and just fell in love with the name. There were a few people with variations of Char aznable on the forums, but nobody with the simple first name "Char". I knew I had to grab it, and I've been rocking it since. No way am I going to change it as long as I am here.
I was Super_Naruto, then Retro, then now Char.

Are Jaehoon and I the only people that never changed their name on the forum?
Nope, I've had mine the exact same why since I signed up.
Where does mine come from? I was (guess I still am) a fan of Yoroiden Samurai Troopers and 'Suiko no Shin' (Shin of the Water) was my favorite of the five. The word itself is a fairly old origin from the Chinese literary classic - The Water Margin. It shares a similar pronounciation of the games Suikoden (which I've only thought about playing).
'Eiji' comes from a long, convoluted story relating to Battle Arena Tohinden because a good friend of mine adopted the name 'Sho' and Eiji was his little brother. It's grown on me, although I've fiddled around with the kanji to use.
I chose it for the forum because I wrote (very poorly) fanfiction and participated on the Yoroiden Samurai Troopers Mailing List e-mail group all under this name. I find it ironic now that I've looked at it how each of these are referenced in stuff in video games I think it's safe to say, I hate 90% of everything to do with video games.

Same here. I thought about getting it shortened to just "Videl," since everyone refers to me that way on AN, but I thought my username is so...weird. I mean, don't know why I chose "cool girl" at that point in time in Jan, 2003. but now, I would never give it up. I'm too attached to it.

Damn it, I've always wanted to read Water Margin but can't find a good "version," of it I don't have to pay for. I'd buy it, but 20 bucks used is quite a lot of money to spend on something, especially if it reads like the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," novel, which I've read some of online, it'd go right over my head! I'd get the "English," All men are Brothers version but it only has like 700 pages, compared to the expensive one's 2,340.

Seeing how the username "Satsu" was taken on many other sites, I decided to added "maru" to it at the end. Which goes well when I try to sound it out, and makes the username rarer and more original http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p218/Satsumaru/Emoticons/onion14.gif
{NG}Fidel
January 26th, 2007, 04:06 AM
Being Cuban but having lived most of my life in America put me in a weird spot. When I was young and not imparted with all the family secrets of the horrors that were commited to my family in Cuba when Fidel REALLY took power I always thought light of the subject. As a result I would always joke with my Grandfather and Grandmother about Che and Fidel and what not. And Finally when it came to Video games and for the first time I had to input a name Fidel was the first thing to come to my head. Plus in Middle school me and my brother always joked about Communists and Fidel came up for having a grade A++ Beard. I now use Fidelita in order to mock Fidel and me and my clan members mess with peoples heads online as they think Fidelita is a girl.
NG is Neutral Grounds which is the Clan me and two others started after our old clan FR (Federation Republic) had a not so glorious fall out. And Ive never changed my name.
Altthough Im known to use {NG}Nihilist and {NG}Clayer1 (messed up spelling player on the 360 and it stuck).

Still buying collge text books, $20 sounds like a steal. Still having to read said books, though, I typically don't have time to read something that size for pleasure. Changed to this name, cuz I felt I'm too old to be using that name, too cutesy. I was writing certain words on paper and something came up to me and wrote the word "Etch". It sounded cool but I wanted it to sound less familiar so made it past tense. Then, I was typing I missed the letter "e", and it looked better. Juz then I had my name changed.
Actually I'm waiting for another name change.

Originally known as SNK fangirl Yuri-chan, I then choose this current username more than 2 years ago. She is a sorceress from Lunar 2: Eternal Blue who specializes in black magic!! I found her personality to be so similar to mine, hence, I became Lemina. Lunar was a popular video game RPG series released for the Sega Genesis and then later on in the Playstation in the 90's and was released by GameArts. BTW, I still retain my Yuri-chan name at an SNK forum I frequent in, so I don't really miss it since I still use it there. :P I ended up changing it here because of an annoyance of messages about me liking "Yuri". >_<
Kiyone
January 26th, 2007, 10:30 PM
I was going through a phase in 2000-2001 when I didn't want to be identified by my real name on the Internet, so, when I signed up with Ain't It Cool News, I decided to be "Kiyone" since... I like Kiyone.
Then, in December 2001, somehow an AN thread overreacting to a satirical anti-anime piece (http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.11.20.94827.169.html) that was obviously written just to troll anime fans came to my attention, and I decided to make a post pointing out that it's not a serious article and it is in no way meant to be taken at face value. I wasn't feeling too creative with the usernames that morning, so I just recycled my AICN user name, "Kiyone", even if Kiyone is a female and I'm not.
A month later, I (re-)joined the ANN forum, which had just rebooted from scratch since the older ANN forum was flamewar-central, but I used the more gender-appropriate nickname Tenchi.
Today if I join a message board, I'm just plain old Steve Brandon.

Ironically, back in 2000, I used to have a username of the opposite gender. I registered the IGN VG boards as trunksdojo. Back then, I was just getting into anime and I had really got into Dragonball Z when it came out on TV. My favorite character was Trunks, hence, I became trunksdojo in IGN. Back then I didn't care, so I just chose what I liked at the time. I still use IGN just to link to my video game collection, but I still post there on the free boards once in a while. ^_^
Geo
January 26th, 2007, 11:44 PM
I choosed Geo for three reasons:
-The Neo Geo.
-I felt there were too many Neo like names and not enough Geo's.
-Geo kinda associated with rocks/earth, an element I favoured at the time.
Then, in December 2001, somehow an AN thread overreacting to a satirical anti-anime piece (http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.11.20.94827.169.html)
Ah yes, such memories.. I'm pretty sure I'm the dude who linked that site when my brother showed me ^^; Not only was it a troll, the site that it was posted on was a site aimed at certain single white males (can't really remember what kind of male population though)

Panko Z
January 27th, 2007, 08:25 PM
i honestly made mine up, i just didn't want to use my real handle but it actually took me 20 minutes or so to come up with. no associations or hidden meanings like everyone else. i'm sure some people assumed i'm a girl based on the "ko" but i am, in fact, a guy. the Z was added for some oomph, X is too common and at first it was going to be ZX but eventually it just didn't feel right. and although i enjoy DBZ it was not intended as any basis and it didn't click with me at the time.
coincidently, about 2 weeks after signing up i was at the supermarket getting some snacks and i spotted an item called Panko, apparently it's bread crumbs for cooking.

This is Trefellin, son of Trefellgus. He is a faunish chieftain and obviously a badass. I just wrote down a bunch of name beginnings, middles and ends and then mixed and matched them until I got something I liked. Then I googled it to see how many other people had come up with the same thing. Trefellin was completely original.

A name is a name, not a person. Label me what you will if you are being negative, if you are not, then yes I was a big time back in middle school secretly staying up late to see Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim. Thankfully I changed, and trust me I know what you mean. Yet when I am working out to get through those last few tough sets I listen to one song and just picture my former fat self, then change my thoughts to the girl that means the world to me. These lines can sum it up, as I got the message, changed, and still don't care about certain things, as such my user name is just a name, not me.

Holy Knight
December 31st, 2007, 12:29 PM
I'm a great lover of irony. About three years ago I was obsessed with Hellsing and the awesomeness of Alucard. I considered his way of acting and found it to be quite similar to a Knight in some respects. Where the irony comes in is the "Holy" part. Hence, I had an avatar of Alucard and the name "Holy Knight" to go with it.
To follow suit, I now have an avatar of Yagami Light, who is definitely no Knight and certainly not holy.
I quoted since I already responded to this thread when it started.
However, I now have an avatar of Clark Gable, whom I found quite fitting when combined to my username.
Plus, the man is made of awesome.

Lord Timaeus
December 31st, 2007, 01:33 PM
My apologies, Bernard.
"Timaeus" is derived from the Greek name Τιμαιος (Timaios), meaning "honor". Therefore, the name is pronounced "Tim-EYE-us" rather than "Tim-MAY-us". It, of course, is shared with the name of Plato's dialogue referring to Atlantis, which was in turn ripped off from the Doma arc in Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters.

My cousin and I were trying to come up with names for Starcraft online. I got KenOhki'sRage and he got Freya'sRage (from FFIX). I became KenOhki'sRage when I forgot my password to my earlier name Tekrelious. I asked the moderators to change it to Ken-Ohki later when I realized the name wasn't taken.

My parents were hippies, that's how I ended up with a name like Prons.
When I started talking to Chinese people I found that it was really hard for them to pronounce and spell Prons (Pronce, Pron, Pons), so I adapted a chinese name, kind of like how Cat Stevens adapted an Islamic name. I'm glad to say mine is a little less sillier than a lot of other foreigner's chinese names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rowswell Big Mountain? I doubt he gets any chicks)
In everything on the Internet, I go as Prons. If I need a last name I put Amuro
Mikosage
December 31st, 2007, 02:52 PM
Seeing as how this is an anime forum, I assume that many of you have heard of Gaiaonline. For those of you who are scratching your heads and furiously drawing out math equations to figure out what I'm talking about, it's a site where you make a little person and walk around in a little world to chat with people. It's...well...meh.
Anyway, when I was trying to sign up originally, I could not figure out a name. There are millions of users on that website, and I am seriously not exaggerating when I tell you that even scrawling random punches across my keyboard received the message, "USER NAME UNAVAILABLE".
So I thought for a minute. I absolutely adore Miko. They are what I consider to be one of the sexiest group of women on the planet. I dunno why, so don't ask. I have issues...lol
Then I thought, "Well, Miko are wise. What is a wise person called...?" *cue lightbulb above my head* Aha! A sage is pretty wise, right? Hells yeah!
So I put 'em together. Mikosage was born. To this day, if you Google "Mikosage", you'll get a bunch of my AMV's on Youtube and random posts across a bunch of forums. I suspect that I am the only one on the internet with that username thus far, as it is ALWAYS available on different sites.
(Lol, I was really mad when I tried making a Gmail account. It said username taken. I was like, WTF?! Who took my name?!!! Heh...turns out I made the account a few months before and totally forgot. XD)

But, I'm surprised "mikosage" is even that unique. There's even a Myspace account used by another Lord Timaeus, and I am in no way affiliated with it.

December 31st, 2007, 07:30 PM
Okay, my story about mine...
When I first joined here... possibly back in 02 or 03 I was under the nickname Apophasis (or some adaptation of that using other symbols etc to make it look "cool"). I used to only use the FanArt / Fiction section and barely glimpsed at the rest of the board. (That was back in the day when I first started to learn how to draw anime characters).
I then stopped coming here (life/busy/girlfriends etc got in the way), for a while, and when I'd come back I'd only check it out and then disappear for a long period of time again... needless to say, I ended up forgetting my password and login details, I think I also changed my email account so I couldn't get it back... LOL
Anyways, since coming back, I've had Mirkz since I was at school/highschool.
It's a shortening of my last name (u know... typical bloody Aussie type thing to do...idiots.. LOL), and because my last name is actually spelt differently I used a few different letters etc to make it look "cooler" :P

Wow, I didn't make a post last time.
Meson comes from my science fiction video gamer days when I was a noob. Meson guns are a type of weaponry. It slowly came my stage name as it began to stick. It also refers to a class of particles, which relates to my love of physics, which is good.

I like Scandinavia. And I dream a lot. Last night's dream involved my having a Barbie doll named Brooke with really straight blonde hair and a bikini.
Back in October 1997, I was trying to pick a Hotmail username. "Scandia" was taken, so I just put "Scandiadream" because I dream so much and so fatidically. And it was not in use. So it has been my internet alias since then.
Things are MUCH better now in every possible way.

f2akid
August 15th, 2008, 04:44 PM
I think I owe an explanation for my name as I'm pretty sure no one gets it.
Basically my close friends call me 'faith' or 'faith man' (that's another story altogether but to put it bluntly it's because of me being more religious than my friends when we were younger). And I had an American friend years back who would always say the word 'kid' at the end of most of his sentences, ad-libbed it all the time. Now I've always been a fan of the east london rapper Kano and he sometimes says 'K.A!' (the first two words of his stage name) in his songs, so I would say 'F.A!' as a joke every now and then. My American friend liked me saying F.A. and when he saw me he would say something like 'Yo, F.A. kid!'. And that rolls off the tongue for me considering the context of it all (also I haven't seen American guy in years) and when I was thinking of a name for AN I was going to put faith or faithman but me being myself, I decided to make the name a little complicated and thought about f2akid as in - F.A. kid.
So, I'm sure that's not what anyone was expecting but it finally explains the name.

But I liked the handle since it incorporated the name of my hometown!

The Collector
May 3rd, 2009, 11:27 AM
*Appears*
Many view my name "The Collector" as a description of what fans of a certain fandom does as in Anime or anything else; and that's collect items. This had a part of having this name as it works, but it does have a materialistic view of me which I did not intend to possess.
The true meaning is that I'm a collection of many things that make me, me. In thought, action, beliefs...etc., an eclectic being if you will. (It also describes my secret powers of collecting lightening and collecting the powers of others and turning them into live action figures and putting life into non living action figures.)
Some made a referance that I'm named after a name that the comic book guy used in a Simpson's episode, but I can tell you I never knew about that episode until way after I made my existance on AN and the episode may have been shown after I debuted here on AN.
Thank You.

It's one of many names I've used while playing Team Fortress 2, specifically in the peak of the Sniper vs. Spy update. Simply put, it's a name ideally used by a Spy equipped with the Dead Ringer unlock, which allows the user to feign death after taking damage while simultaneously cloaking yourself. Naturally, it's a name meant to deceive the enemy players after supposedly dying.

If you have ever read the SDK (Samurai Deeper Kyo) Manga, you will understand why I picked my username. In the event that you do, there may be more than one character personality I feel I sort of match.
But Yukimura is so shiny :P
