It's an old question, where do geeks come from.
After all, if guys never leave their basement, how do you end up with little geeks :)
Well THIS is perhaps the best evidence ever, that female geeks do indeed exist

It happens when two geeks meet in the night....
I'm a Video Game and Anime Geek (I also love NFL Football). I met my husband in college through Theatre and he's also a geek (video games, Anime etc). We have been married 5 years and have our own mini geek who is about to turn 2 next month.
And yes, she already likes to sit and watch Anime with mommy. (The ones she liked the most are Kodocha, Negima, Samurai 7, and Angelic Layer.)
So see we do exist....

I could have told you there are female geeks out there, pleanty, in fact. Ok, I don't know any personally, but I'd love to meet one (so if you know any cute lady geeks, just pass along my phone number, I really need something besides gaming to fill up my Friday nights).
As for where little geeks come from: don't you know that geek is hot, it's the new meal ticket. Everyone wants a geek.

Sorry Tenou I know some semi-geeky girls but I got dibs.
I didn't answer the title of the thread which is arguably the most interesting thing about the thread. I think geeks are from Mars and the rest of us are from Venus. No actually I think geekiness is in fact not an inherited trait. Geeks occur as a result of excesses. That is the true origin of the geek: excess.

January 24th, 2007, 02:48 PM
Geeks are a result of culture and natural disposition. Example: I grew up around electronics, video games, and cars, so naturally, my interest was piqued on how those worked. I didn't have much, but learned to use what I did have. I developed a keen interest in reading as a result of being in hospital for 11 surgeries over ten years. Parents can also be a major influence on such things, my father being the biggest influence on my passion for technology.

... or if you want to be really technical, Geeks are brought into the world through the union of human beings. everybody is born a geek: some just choose not to show it.

Dunno. I'd consider myself a geek. Only a geek would spend their whole summer reading books about Black Holes instead of going to clubs. Course, my dad is a geek too. Could be inherited.

I like it when women gyrate. That's what public access television is for to watch reggae videos with women gyrating. If that is geeky then geekiness is awesome.

That's kinda neat. The part about spending the summer reading about black holes.
A while back I was watching some of my documentary stash, it was on String Theory. My son came in and watched it. He said it was interesting.
Man I was soooooo proud hehe.
There's little chance of him ending uplike me though. I am waaaaaaaaay so extreme a case. Every facet of my personality is so utterly non conforming. My interests are always so totally fringe. The way I see things is so totally contrary to the norm.

So do you think drinking the blood of puppies is okay? (Its so fringe I think only **** Cheney could say yes). Just messin' with you there.
You know, the spending summer reading brings up an interesting point. My summers are quite geeky as all I do is go to work. Oh and I eat lunch with friends or watch movies with them. The rest of the time was spent pimping my old mac. Otherwise they lack the excitement they used to have. I used to spend summers in Cancun with my cousin picking up Portuguese and Japanese girls. Now summer is just tame. I am becoming more of a geek every year I think.

I'm a geek and a girl, yet my parents are not geeks at all. I think I am because I was raised in front of a TV watching Star Trek, and fell in love with the ewoks of star wars so I just assumed my role as a geek. I also have the inate ability to figure out how to use electronics, so naturally I am a geek.

Why do guys act like women liking things besides shopping and shoes is such a crazy idea? I hate shopping, and I would much rather sit at home playing Zelda for the Wii then going out to a romantic movie. I'm a giant fan of anime, and I can talk old Nick shows for hours. As soon as I see something like this I see somebody that is just like everybody else and just wants to be different. Non-conforming is normal so deal with it. Don't call yourself normal or different. Don't say your an extreme case or the most mild of a person, it all makes you look like an idiot trying to hard. Just be yourself and do not put any kind of label on yourself no matter what it is.

and people, stop trying to say that we're the normal ones and everyone else is wierd, that all people are nerds/geeks and they just dont know it. geeks are into things not mainstream at all. if your good with computers, nerd. you like anime, high caliber nerd. bookworm, nerd. play video games a lot, nerd. different personality than most people, freak. we're separate from society, so we are rejected by many. deal with it. your part of something different and not understood.

I think the key to geekiness is the obsession factor. I call it the "fan" factor. You either have the capacity to be involved in fandom or you don't. I think there actually might be some heredity to this as my uncle was a massive D&D geek in the 80's, and my dad is a sci-fi geek. My mom is not a geek in the least, and yet both me and my brother are.
I think that a lot can also be attributed to characteristics defined by Jung in "Personality Types." For instance, there's a very high level of introverted thinking types in geekdom.

play video games a lot, nerd.
Hmm....no. And I play Street Fighter at a high level and I still don't appear nerdish to people. The way I dress and present myself to people would say otherwise and aside from video games, I read comic books, collect action figures and post here and a fighting game forum.
I wouldn't even consider calling anyone a nerd. I consider them knowledgeable in niche subcultures. A nerd is a pretty harsh stereotype. Just my $0.02.
VidelCoolGirl
January 25th, 2007, 11:56 AM
Yeah, the term "nerd" matters on the person, and I'm not sure if it can really mean anything. Everyone has their obsession, and if its not in the "norm," it shouldn't matter. I may be a "nerd" by society's terms, but I don't think I am personally.
Soluzar
January 25th, 2007, 11:58 AM
Is there a difference between "nerd" and "geek" in the eyes of those using the terms? I use the terms differently myself. Nerds are like that film "Revenge of the Nerds" while geeks are those who actually have social skills to some extent as well as the anime/sci-fi/videogames interests.

I say bs to the list. I'll die an extreme music enthusiast before anyone tells me I'm to old to listen to metal, new wave, digital hardcore, and noise. This generation of pop won't hold up in five years. Regarding sex, I'm an avid Erotica enthusiast, but other than that I take a scholarly approach to such things. I watch Mexican Federation Football and Premier League as well as being an avid motorsport fan. I do try to avoid reality tv, but some shows are just awesome trainwrecks.

Yes... that's what makes you a geek. At the very minimum it is what makes you a part of the counter-culture, even if you don't conform to the specific 'geek' stereotype.
Like it or not, that list works for the majority in society, and it is from the example of the majority we derive the societal norm. The part that most sharply defines the norm is not a specific interest in any of the things on that list, it is instead an unwillingness to take an interest in anything outside of the list.
The first time you open your mind to an unpopular genre of music, or to video games after the age of 16 years, or to learning to program your own computer instead of using the programs written by others, you've taken a small step away from the norm.

So imho, I don't really think there's any such thing as a geek 'cause we all have different interests, but we're all people. I think everyone is weird. So that makes everyone normal, lol. Some people may show their "different" side more but, yeah~

I guess the only thing I can currently add to the thread, is for gods sake accept that there are no drop dead female goddesses with an obsession with your fav anime waiting out there for you :)
There's no dream hunk waiting for the ladies either.
If life blesses you with a mate, chances are by 30 and two kids, your wife will have a lot in common with a pillow, and for guys, they likely will have lost their hair and added padding at the waist :) Certainly describes me and my wife along with all the 40 something's I know :)
I know of at least two guys that meet my description, that would likely be good finds as mates, but forget bragging about your catch while at the beach hehe.
Given enough time, you can actually add several modes of geekness.
Been the army geek, the D&D geek, am currently an anime geek, been a bookworm geek my whole life. Slowly turning into a computer geek with some gradual learning. Never been a Star Wars or Star Trek geek, but happy to be an SG1 geek.
I think I have had the most fun being an anime geek though.

I'm not sure whether geekiness is hereditary. If so, I may have got it from my father, but my mother certainly isn't geeky. Also, my brother is kind of a geek too. Therefore, I think it may only require one geek to produce several geek offspring, depending on whether geekiness is a dominant gene.

Classic rock and heavy metal. i dont even know what you could consider Jimi Hendrix, cause what he did on the guitar is not normal. its like blues meets heavy metal in a genius combination.

But sadly, I've had past troubles with being "too" smart in my past. It gets in the way. Being VERY smart is no less a burden than being utterly gorgeous. It's just as intimidating. I think I am still wearing scars from an experience in my mid teens at a cadet camp in the summer. I was taken aside by an instructor and told, no one likes being around me, because I'm too smart. He essentially told me to act dumber to be more popular.

I think you're dead wrong about it being intimidating. It's certainly not a popular quality with a lot of people, but you're just fooling yourself with a comforting fiction if you think they find it intimidating. They just find it annoying. They want you to come down to their level not because they are intimidated by you, but simply because their level is the only one they have an appreciation for.
When you say it's intimidating, that's like all the people who say that cool kids are jealous of smart kids. Wrong. Cool kids just don't like smart kids. The annoying thing is that some people hold onto that mentality their whole lives.

I'm starting to think that most people are not looking for smarts these days, they're more interested in a man's mentality sate and the old Dog's woman's best friend routine. but recently, I've found out that's not always the case with some people.
Listen if any of you think your and underachiever, I will sure a hell say i'm the underdog here, even if i'm a genius. haveing smarts is one thing, building smarts from someone who lives with you, now that's something totally different.

Geeks are anyone who has more interest in the little, technical things around them than "dull normals". I also don't believe you have to be smarter than the average person to be qualified as either a nerd or a geek, since hard work > smarts. Therefore, I applaud anyone who pursues his or her area of interest with passion and devotion.
I don't define myself as either of those titles, nor would anyone brand me as either upon seeing me, though I would probably be attributed both by outside observers. I just what I want, the way I want to do it and how I want to. If others choose to define it in their own ways, then I'll sometimes enforce that image and even joke about it. Either way, I don't care because I'm the one who's actively pursuing his ideals rather than what others would expect out of me.
To each his own.

I've had to put up with girls complaining that I'm too smart for them, leading to being dumped. It's usually because of the way I speak, since I choose to speak in correct English. It's a crappy feeling having to carry a guilty conscience for wanting to learn and present myself eloquently.

This is the way i speak in real life, it's all slow and jagged and and i don't seem to use the right words. Put a little pinch of college procrastination in there mixed with a 12 year old soul in a 21 year old body. and I'm like the perfect chick magnet :P

Screw that, dude. I wouldn't stay with a girl like that if she begged me. I wouldn't stay with a girl like that for any price. If the girl isn't on my level, mentally speaking, there's no future in it anyway. That's partly why I've been single for so much of my life.

My parents are concerned that I haven't had sex and they keep trying to pair me up with the most stereotypical Latina girls and putting pressure on me to go out. I just tell them to **** off. Oh well, as always I have to take it upon myself to convince them I'm normal.

I am experiencing fear. The last thing any male wants or needs is for his parents to be in any way involved in his sex life. I'm so grateful my parents never made any serious efforts to pair me off with anyone. They may have made few suggestions in that direction when I was younger, but they soon got the idea that their notions of what constitute a sexy lady are very different than mine.
In fact, if my mother were to say "Oh, isn't she pretty!" I would turn around fully expecting to see someone that I wouldn't give a second glance to even if my life depended on it. The girls she thinks are pretty are these wispy little waifs with extremely angular features.
I don't date women with angles. Curves are where it's at.

You're lucky. I'm getting the ol' "Are you gay?" routine. Hispanic parents are harsh. They don't pair me up though because I would unleash a beasting SO HORDE they would feel it in the after life.

dude sex is just the whipped topping, don't go for that cherry before you eat the ice cream. the ice cream is the trust and unity the whipped cream is just the flavor enhancer. you got to make the girl happy before you do the fun. trust me, I've never had it, but that's how it works.

See how damaging cadet camp is to the geeks of the world? Hurts their pride being taught by anti-geek people... who you respect at the time, because they're older and instructors and in a position of authority...
Asking everyone for a facade so they can temporarily get along with a bunch of strangers for a few weeks over summer.
You were a teenager, though. There's actual intelligence, and then there's snotty pedantic know-it-all who acts like he has no respect for anyone else. Which is a common behaviour amongst geek teens, before they become tolerable adults.
You mean the guy who was doing all the dance moves to Dragostea Din Tea on his webcam? That was much funnier than this. I was just talking about that video the other day, as it happens. It's pretty funny, but that guy must have no self-respect.

Ohhhhh.... that thing... I saw that ages ago, but completely forgot the song.
Yeah... you guys talk about geeks being too smart for other people... yet, this is what you claim while you spend your time watching this rubbish. That's the dumbest thing of all. :P

Since you're frequently accused of being too smart, hang out in bars near to a local higher education institution (rather than school playgrounds)

Hey, at least your parents still have hope for you. My dad, relatives, friends, uh...Priests...teachers, and random folk seem to all think I'm going to wind up the old wrinkly spinster woman who lives on the corner. You know the one--the old lady who smells a little funky and has tens of thousands of cats. Yippy.
I should make myself a T-shirt or something.
EDIT: Oh, Soluzar--your title made me seriously laugh. Nice :P

That would be a behaviour which some geeks never fully leave behind. It's very irritating to find that behaviour in a person who has passed his teens, but it's not quite entirely uncommon.

Being too smart for a lot of the other people in this world... doesn't actually mean you have to be particularly smart. You just have to be smarter than average.

Quoted for true!! this woman knows what it feels like!! I support you!! they also scare the crap out of me!!....but..they usualy can go outside...cleaning the streets while being under the heavy eye of a female guard....
There are houses just a couple of meters from the main entrance of the prison...Right now I can see the prison from a near window...We are talking about a very lack of space here...afterall this is a very small town where I live.

Its funny though, because women are usually more discrete, or not as easy to catch as guys. There are women out there who just do it, but most do it because they SERIOUSLY need a boyfriend, or something happened to them when they were younger.
Remember that Dateline thing about the online chatrooms? 40 people, all of them men. They asked why, and he Said women are more careful about that kind of thing or something.

Now, my neighbor`s Wife...usualy asks me to come to her house to give her some private lessons about computers..she has a laptop and she doesnt know very much about it while her kid plays the psp....One day while she was cutting my hair..Yes she cuts my hair..thats her job, hair dresser.
She told me about something very much messed up because when she was graduating in the same collegue that I am now, there was a case involving a math teacher with a student...she belonged to that class and knew the boy..15 or 16 at that time...This happened 20 years ago...and the teacher was about in her mid 20 for what my neighbor told me... the Teacher assaulted one of her classmates for several months....This secret play was only found out due to the fact of the victim...appeared one day in the house very late and full of bite marks and scratches....
The woman was caught and judged guilty........My neighbor told me this story because..she met her old math teacher...Married with the so called boy and has two kids...
