View Full Version : The weirdest "nagative" reaction to an anime you've experienced

I am thinking this has likely been discussed off handedly before ... maybe, but probably not directly.
Thought of this while posting to the peeves thread.
It's one thing for "us" to have a peeve, but, what's the most illogical negative reaction to anime you have experienced or at least know about.
Myself. Ok I have a long time very good friend of mine, his wife is a very nice person, I do in fact get along well with her, no objections to HER specifically, but she has some of the most grossly uneducated totally whacky notions in her head.
Ok first off she lives eats sleeps for her bible. No I am not initiating an anti religion dialogue, you just need to know, she lives for reading her bible and apart from work, housework and grocery shopping, there is nothing else in her life basically.
She once admonished me for watching Sailormoon, as she was of the opinion Sailormoon is demonic. You see Sailor scouts use crystals, and demons use crystals, and thus Sailormoon is demonic.
To be honest, I had a hard time not bursting out laughing. Not sure what I would have said in protest though, as usually a counterpoint is rooted in at least something reasonably logical sounding.
So with great will power I shut down, and said nothing, nadda (that was actually painfull, I talk alot routinely).
I've wondered about her ever since though (this was a few years ago).
I also lost a non friendship thanks to Ranma. I call it a non friendship, because the person was never really a friend in the first place. You don't lose real friends over the truely meaningless.
Well it was dinner, we had invited some friends (married couple) and their son over to dinner. Nothing special, just dinner. I was watching Ranma before dinner was served. I just left it on. No biggie I figured.
Well Ranma ends up nude a number of times in that show eh.
The friend's wife gets suddenly aghast that I am watching I suppose she thought porn or something. Thought it greatly inappropriate I would expose her 14 year old son to that stuff (I said 14 year old son eh, remember that).
I said lighten up (insert her name here). It's nothing.
She completely loses it. I mean loses it.
She's disgusted I would challenge her parental authority.
She's at the front door at light speed and informs her husband aka pet dog he better not be far behind her (lost all respect for that man immediately).
She just up and dumps a supposed friend of several YEARS for that.
Screw her.
Back to the 14 year old son. if he's normal, he's already been in bed with a 14 year old girl, likely having better informed sex than I would have experienced when I was 14 too :)
That she freaked out over a modern 14 year old boy seeing an animated unclothed barbie doll leaves me to realise, better the non friendship ended before I actually needed to depend on it one day. Good riddance to people like that.

I used to share a house with a buddy of mine. He's not as big of an anime fan as I am, but he would often watch my DVDs right along with me. We watched quite a few series together, but then we tried watching The Vision of Escaflowne. After about six episodes he just couldn't keep watching.
Apparently the noses are too pointy.

But lets not have a religious debate

I once knew a girl that dispised Naruto because she thought that it wasn't appropriete... no, it wasn't any of the parts you are thinking of...
she thought that love triangles were inappropriete... no matter how much I tried to explain it, she thought this...

Well, "birds of a feather, flock together." Most anime fans seem to get along, because if you share the same interest with another, especially when it comes to some of the views presented by anime, you most likely share a similar view about other things as well.

So if you haven't been nailed by 14, it's not normal? -_-; I think that's kinda...half true, half false.
I haven't had any reactions that I'd label as weird. Most are are just narrow-minded and blind bashing of anime. Like, when I was a senior in high school, so lowly freshman girl found out I liked anime. She said it's weird to prefer it over real movies. I asked her if she had seen one, and she said no. I tried to kindly rationalize with her and tell her that if she hasn't seen one, she really has no right to be labeling it as weird anyways. She still said it's weird. I can't stand people like that. There is no way of having a civil conversation with them.

Regarding sexually active 14 year olds, maybe I was over reacting. Still, I live in a town where the gals are juuuuuust a bit too "willing". I've heard my town referred to the teen pregnancy capital of Canada. No that's NOT a good thing.
On the subject of "She said it's weird to prefer it over real movies."
My reply, anyone that enjoys "reality tv" types shows is a great deal weirder than I will ever be that's for sure.
And let's just examine some of the movies released this century. Sorry, the quality in anime is actually a good bit higher normally.
I watched my KOR series recently. I was reduced to an emotional wreck. Good luck getting any of the schlock in the theaters doing that to me. The only time I get emotional in the theater normally, is when I realise, "hey I paid 20 bucks to see this worthless crud with the wife tonight. I want my money and my 2 hours back!!
To be honest, I do NOT consider downloading movies to be a major moral offense. I would rather watch the film, and if it was good THEN go and invest my rare dollars on it. I usually will only go to a theater when the film is likely money in the bank. Something like Lord of the Rings (I have the ultra deluxe mega release box sets for that triology eh).
I'm still wondering for instance, how did they actually get people into the theater the SECOND day after Borat was released.
How was it Children of Men survived to sell tickets after the first weekend?
No, it's a very deliberate thing my choosing anime to watch.
Those that go overboard on their objections, they are to be pitied. They are ruled by some seriously freaky dogma and misinformation.

Well, I'd consider this to be a strange anime reaction. I was visiting a neighbors house one day and for some random reason the topic of Ranma 1/2 came up. The girl who was several years younger than me said she thought it was a tad bit religiously offensive the idea of a boy changing sex (even though the series clearly states that Ranma didn't ask for this).
Curiously she liked Evangelion a lot.
-Hopeless, you should go watch Pan's Labyrinth if it's available in Canada. Disturbing to say the least.

On topic I had a 40 year old man nearly go into epileptic fits in a comic store when I told him Sailor Moon sucked worse than Pokeman. He was talking to a group of 8 to 12 year olds. It turns out later that evening the Sherriff came and talked to the shop owner and the guy was a registered sex offender and this was the 3rd shop he had tried to camp out in. The owner asked me if I could take him home, I of course refused but offered to remove the guy from the premises.

- People in a Christian chatroom on IRC about 7 years ago were totally opposed to anime in general.
- Someone I knew was opposed to Pokemon saying they were satanic, but had no problem with anime in general and even thought Sailor Moon was good.
- People thinking all anime is hentai.
- When I asked a co-worker what did he know about video games, he said "I know they exist".

I did get one weird response once. I for one reason or another wrote an outline and a draft on essay about anime and the type I preferred (stuff like Gundam and you know manly anime) and how I would incorporate that into a short story of my own. So after we wrote our drafts, and the teacher had read them he called us up one by one to discuss the drafts/outlines we had written. So the guy says "so I read your draft and I want to ask you, do you have a lot of inner anger?" I laughed out loud and said that I in fact had no inner anger, quite loudly and people laughed even more. But the whole thing was pretty funny, especially considering I was always making jokes in that class.

And yeah, I've had a lot of bad experiences, but I don' hold it against people if they hate it. Loves the bible? Good for her, shes a good Christian. Thinks Pokemon is better than SM? Absurd, but hey, not my opinion.

By far and wide the weirdest reaction I've gotten happened about 3 years ago. We were watching Evangelion in my Comic Illustration class, and only about 5 of us were really appreciating it. Everyone else, who was only in the class for class credit, was making fun of it the whole way. We had just gotten to the scene in episode 2 where Shinji discovers Pen-pen in the shower and accidentily exposes himself to Misato. All those kids were saying things like "Dude, wouldn't you know if your schlong is just hanging out like that?" That was actually a rather amusing comment

Related, but not from anime. But I also once did an article for an english class.
I tried to dramatize a scene similar to what had happened at My Lai (points for anyone that actually knows this event). Anyway, it should be mentioned, this happened DURING MY LIFE, it wasn't something I read in a book. I watched most of this live on TV much as a lot of you see things as they happen in Iraq.
So I turned in the short story. The teacher goes and writes, sounds like any war story. I blew my cool right in front of the class. She was talking to a returning adult student that had already spent time in uniform.
I bluntly asked her exactly what made her think she was even sufficiently skilled to make such an assertion. I walked out and told her I was having my class moved to another member of the faculty.
I can handle a person simply not liking something, but I have a lot of trouble suffering outright blind ignorance.

I once brought Chobits Vol. 1, Gravitation Vol. 2, and Naruto Vol. 6 to school last year.
Bear in mind that in 7th grade I went to a TINY Catholic school. The graduating class that year was 14. MY graduating class was 29.
So I'm sitting there minding my own business reading Chobits and suddenly I get it taken away from someone claiming to be the "Biggest ***** in Pennsylvania". However I reclaimed that title at the end of the school year. They're showing it around and reading it and OH NOES NAKED ROBOTZ!!!111
The chick flips out on me and another one takes my Gravi manga.
My face: O____O ****.
They experience looks of horror on their face and start yelling about me "Bringing in pornography!" "Worshipping the devil by supporting homosexuality!" and what-not.
They take it to whom I believe was my BEST. TEACHER. EVAR. I'm not going to reveal more than his first initial though. Mr. C, I know, has a ton of Evangelion manga and honestly does not give a flying **** about the hints of religion and such in it. I know he's also bought Sailor Moon for his daughters and he owns a Yu-Gi-Oh card shop in Zerns. Not to mention I've seen pics of this guy's living room. So they take it to Mr C., thinking I'll be EXPELLAMABANNHAMMERED!
He takes the book, reads it, and hands it back to me.
"I don't think it's nice to take someone's property in the first place, because I don't think she let you have it. Apologize to Katie." They stand, mouths open.
I brought in Kingdom Hearts the next day to let them look at that.
They couldn't find much of a problem with it besides the "DEVIL WORSHIP!!!111" crap.

A few years ago in a kmart store I was at I had started talking to an employee about a certain figure they might carry, and in mentioning anime he said the most annoying thing an anime lover could hear, "Oh, I can't stand that stuff, all their faces are the same." This of course is from someone who hasn't seen many other than sailormoon or any other of the ones that did not have much merit. Yes some of the character designs follow a set template, but if your really paying attention, you'll see the unique differences in each anime. ~Angela

My ex-girlfriend was thumbing through my ROBOT vol 1 a while back and got really creeped out. I asked her what was wrong and she said something along the lines of "this is child pornography....I... I don't know what to think of this..."
I tried to explain that art is art and that ROBOT was an uncensored, raw compilation of works from some of Japan's most famous artists, but she still thought it was sick and disgusting. I didn't feel like pointing out her obsession with yaoi at the moment, since I didn't want to act as narrow minded as she was.

Here's another weird story, though not exactly negative as in' "Y'all are going to hell for reading/watching child porn" way:
Probaly around three years ago, I went to a comic book store in Philly that I like 'cause they were the only ones that had the Japanese versions of manga and magazines I liked. I go in and there's this guy boring the poor clerk on his theory on how Kagome and Kikyo are the same person from Inuyasha.
I don't mind discussing anime; hey I would love to meet more people who are into it, especially those around my age. But the way the man was talking, all I kept thinking was, 'Thank you for giving more people the impression that anime fans are either pedophiles or pathetic.'

Anime and manga theories should be kept to either friends or forums. They're the only ones who'll be receptive to it anyway.:P

Well, to her, it may not be narrow minded.
See, I think everyone here, (Expression, not EVERYONE) is using their own prejudice over what they think the other person should be feeling. To someone less educated, they might think its porn or whatever, but thats from what they believe.
I hate Love Hina. I think its one of the worse anime I've seen in a long time, yet somebody might tell me otherwise, and say "you have to see more," or ect. But that's my prejudice, and if I don't hear any of it, and continue to say its a bad anime, why care at all?

I think the Love Hina anime is a mixed bag. Basically if someone didn't like Love Hina, the last thing in the world I would tell them to do is see more. I felt it went downhill really fast, because the little changes they made started to accumulate towards the end. If you don't like the anime I would suggest the manga, as it is a lot different.
And all of these stories about people having bad experiences with outsiders to anime/manga are really funny. I've never actually had one because I keep it to myself or my friends. I think it basically boils down to trying to explain something foreign. Different cultures have different views on certain things, and even though the common anime/manga fan will be open to a lot more things, discussing these things with...I want to say this in a nice way...people who live in their own little world, is just asking for trouble.

I once had to listen to a Star Trek fan talk about Vulcan mateing habits to any passing female at a Houston comic con. He parked in front of my booth and evidently thought he could get him some hoo hoo by suggesting he was in his 7 year itch cycle and was ready to cheat on his hand. You have never met strange until you have talked to hardcore Trekkies.

I've never had any real "negative" reactions when it comes to anime. Most people are pretty understanding, especially since it's more mainstream now but...

Yeah...negativity...

I hear ya :P. I think if somebody invited me to a Dragon Ball Z marathon, I would have a pretty "negative" reaction. My dislike of DBZ isnt based on my actual watching of the series, but more a preconception/prejudice that I will not even allow myself to enjoy it. The main reason for my DBZ disdain is because I abhor Akira Toriyama's artwork. Something about it makes me cringe everytime I see those eyes and headshape.

Myself, I try to never to discuss a hobby without a fellow fan being present. It's enough to mention almost any hobby in passing, but if the listener isn't actually interested, it is indeed time to shut up :)

I like to think of myself as a Trek fan, but I'm not that bad :) I think the reason I might indulge something over the top for anime, is likely because dressing up as a Klingon just doesn't seem as daring as dressing up as Sailormoon :) I guess anime cosplay feels more outrageous and silly (and the outrageous and silly part is what makes it fun hehe). It's important for cosplayers to realise (and not mind) that they likely look quite idiotic :)

Idiotic? No way, my Ideon cosplay was magnificent!
BTW Ideon movie 2 comes out tonight, everyone on the Internet better download it!

My dad used to be one of those people. My gramma has video from before I was born about my dad doing something along the same lines.

Hmm, I was just looking for informatoin about cartoons on the internet and, somehow, came across more posts by this ASIAN guy. Apparently, other forums get tired of his nigh race supremacy (not as fast as AN did, but...).

Yeah, more readings on this blind faith to ASIAN animation supremacy based solely on the amount of Japanese Cosplayers is painful, but it's a pretty good model of when your fanaticism is becoming blind and just plain ignorant.
