Hmm, I didn't know they were making a "Final Fantasy VI Advance" for GBA. Looks like I know what the next game I'm buying is.

Yeah, a must buy for me also. They also added new Espers. They added Jumbo Cactuar in this one; exactly like the one found in FFVIII with a mustache. I can't wait.

Its already released in Japan :P It's really good too, dispite the fact that (In my opinion) the sound quality was degenerated.

One complaint I actually had about the story of FFVI/III/whathaveyou was that for a lot of the parts where the characters in your party were arbitrary to the dialogue, they just gave the speaker generic lines. Did they do anything about that in the GBA release?

Hmmm...
In the original games and the PSX release, if it doesn't matter who is in the party during a story scene, the characters usually just say the same stuff as everybody else. Do they give a little more personality to the characters in the GBA release? (like if Gau is the party leader during a scene where the party leader talks, does he still talk like a normal person as opposed to the feral child he is?)

Got mine already, already to the world of ruin.
Good Things:
New translation. While some fans might be irked by the changes, the changes do seem to make sense, and I'm not in any position to know which is more accurate.
Haven't encountered the new summons yet, and from what I hear they are hard enough to get that by the time you can you'd be well above what you need to be for Kefka's tower.
Difficulty is higher, if for no other reason than the beloved vanish + doom/Xzone combo no longer works. It wasn't just disabled for the boss fights, but normal fights as well. I gave up trying to fight Intangir on the triangle island before heading to the floating continent.
Only complaint...
Sound - I really don't know if the sound has been lowered from the SNES version, or if my CD's of the OST are just better than both.

I loved Final Fantasy VI ever since I first played it when it came out in America in 1994 for the SNES as Final Fantasy III. I haven't played it since I had bought Final Fantasy Anthologies back somewhere around 1999 or 2000. I'll be picking up Final Fantasy VI Advance Thursday and I look forward to playing it again after all these years, especially with the more faithful translation and extra stuff they added.

It may be a downgrade from the SNES, but CDs are going to provide better quality sound than either the SNES or the GBA.
As for myself, I intend to get this (as well as FFV, FFIII and a DS Lite) within the next few months.

I agree. I liked the sound better for the PSX. I would play my PSX FFVI over FFVI:AD any day..
BUT - The mobility of it lets me carry the sexy places, so FFVI:AD gets my two thumbs up. Plus, its the best FF in existance.. BUY IT Even if its watered down.
EDIT: DOOM/X-V DOESNT WORK? BLASPHEMY! I AM RAIDING SQUARE-ENIX

I got it...It is perhaps the sweetest game on my GBA right now.
As for translations... It's somewhere in-between FFIVAdvance and the original.

Did you actually play the game? The dialogue (or even delivery) changes depending on which characters you have in your party.

Even though you go through periodic storyline changes and almost never have every character in your party, and almost never are able to mix and match your characters, yea, it changes. xD

Okay a quick review from me.
Translation: Its basically like an extended version of Ted Woolsey's translation but with alot of his jokes changed and lamed up, for example the classic line "Son of a Submariner" is changed to "Son of a Sandworm". It does have extra dialog and information that wasn't in the SNES and PS1 versions, probably because of much more space on GBA Carts then on SNES carts.
Graphics: Faster then the PS1 version I played.
Music: It sounds really good if you are playing it on a GB Player on Gamecube.
Gameplay: Godlike, because I no longer have to wait a minute to load a battle and exit a battle like the PS1 version. *AKA Final Fantasy Anthology's FFVI*

Well...maybe I was wrong. I guess I made an assumption based on the fact it doesn't even state the character's name on each bit of dialogue. It only seems to do it for the important parts.

Really? I didn't think it was so bad...but then I'm comparing to what they did to [i[Chrono Trigger[/i].
By the way, are the commands less, shall we say, button-sensitive? It's really annoying trying to do Sabin's Blitzes that have diagonal (spelling?) buttons on the PS1 game.

1)In the GBA version, character portraits are now shown for all the main and special characters when they speak.
2)Yes, loading time was HORRIBLE. I guess you've only played the PS version. I suggest you find someone with the SNES version of FFVI (FF3) and play to compare.
3)Blitz is no problem on the GBA. I was able to do Ranging Fist (a.k.a. Pummel) quite effortlessly and I suppose they simplified the input a bit to accomodate the handheld.
Also, better translation: That alone should put something new to those who are familiar with the SNES version. And no, the best parts of Ted Woosely's script have been retained, and the more awkward wordings and dialogue have been fixed. The best reason to own this version.

Well so far I'm impressed with FFVI Advance. I just got it today and I'm about to head to Mt. Kolts. So far my only complaints are a spelling error in the opening, "Dread Power", and the fact that it seems like they decreased the frames of animation when a character is walking/running. Try turning Auto-Dash on and equipping a character with the Sprint Shoes and you'll really see what I mean, for those who have played the original SNES and PS1 port of the game.

Err...FFVI never originally had a "Dash" command, and the Sprint Shoes were suppose to have that effect. So now, when you equip the Sprint Shoes and "Dash", you're running 4 times faster then what you're suppose to be doing normaly, hence the frames "screw-up."

The PS1 version had it as well and I'm pretty sure it didn't look screwed up like it does in FFVI Advance. Then again..... I haven't played the PS1 version in 7 years so I could be wrong. If I am, then forgive me.

After reading up a bit, I think I got it mixed up with the port of Final Fantasy IV that came in Final Fantasy Chronicles where they added a Dash feature to it.

The problem with the graphics in this version is that they are way too washed out and and bright in this version of Final Fantasy VI Advance, while in the PS1 and SNES versions in was one of the Darker looking Final Fantasy games, that had that dark/gritty look to them.

Actually, you can 'dash' almost, in FFVI. There is an accessory to be able to run. In the original Final Fantasy III you could dash freely with an ability.

Thanks for confirming that. So far I'm loving this game and I'm pretty hooked after not having played it all these years. I'm on the Phantom Train right now on Sabin's scenario before Kefka's attack on Narshe. It also seems that Sabin and Cyan learn their Blitz and Bushido techniques when they get to certain levels now. I was pretty shocked to already have Rising Phoenix (Fire Dance) by the time I first got Banon, when in the other versions the earliest I ever got it was in Kefka's attack on Narshe. Was it like that in the SNES and PS1 versions? I coulda swore it was different.

I can not remember how they got their skills. It's been...at least a decade since I have played FFIII. I do vividly remember the running thing because it's that kind of thing about remakes that pisses me off. In FFIII you had to eat an accessory slot if you wanted to run fast. Losing even one accessory is huge in this game, and now everyone just gets to hit the dash button and be on their way.

Jeez, did you know, all this time, I never knew there were alternate commands for Sabin's Blitzes that did not include diagonal directions? I feel stupid now.
By the way, got the game on Saturday. The transfer was great, and now that I'm playing it, I do agree the loading time is faster, but I don't think that is really that much of a bother for "most" of FFVI. The occasion where it really sticks out though is when you're trying to get Gau's Rages from the Veldt.
I really only have one complaint, major or minor depending on who you ask. Does anybody else think the purcussion in the regular battle music is a little...overblown in the GBA game?

Blame GBA hardware. I'd say Square-Enix (or Tose, whoever you think is responsible) did a fine job trying to get the recreate the music as faithfully as it can be. I thought it would be tremendously butchered. Thankfully, that is not the case.

Well, the way "Phantom Rush" (the former Bum Rush)'s command is described in the game is:
Left, Up-Left, Up, Up-Right, Right, Down-Right, Down, Down-Left, Left
This also works:
Left, Left, Up, Up, Right, Right, Down, Down, Left
Apparently, these also worked for previously released versions of the game.

While I do agree with you that it just isn't worth it to fight Intangirs for the 10 ABPs, I went ahead and fought and killed one to get it in my Bestairy and so I could fight it on the Veldt. Using Stop on it and then just pummeling away on it until it uses Meteor seems to be the best strategy. Of course just make sure to heal your party and that they have at least 1,000 HP or over, since Meteor does around in the 900 damage range. Just rinse and repeat and eventually it will fall.

I'm pretty sure the game automatically unequips everything from said character. I had left Ifrit on Shadow before I went into Thamasa and after the incident with the house burning on fire and etc, I had Ifrit back in my Magicite inventory. Anyways, you should be fine.

Is this when you lose him right after getting Strago or are you talking about after the Floating Continent? I'm pretty sure the game automatically unequips everything from said character. If you equip Shadow with a magicite just before you leave Zozo for the first time (assuming you miraculously made it to Ramuh without him ditching you in a random battle), he will take off with your magicite and you cannot get it back until you go to Thamasa.

I just recently got him myself, but I spent a bunch of time getting all my characters in the 60s in the Dinosaur Forest north of the Veldt. I've yet to really take advantage of that stat increase with him as I'm still learning spells from other Magicite. I also managed to get four Celestriads with that trick in about two hours and I was lucky enough to get a fifth when a Brachiosaur dropped one after I killed it.

I'm still on my first playthrough doing absolutely everything and I don't plan to play it again for probably some years after I beat it. I've already beaten the game technically. I still have the Dragon's Den and Soul Shrine to complete. I only need about 10-11 more Rages to have every Rage with Gau. I've been getting all my characters to level 99 by doing some solo-leveling up in the Dinosaur Forest. I just need to get Setzer and Mog to 99 and everyone will be at Level 99. After that, I'll go fight Kefka again so I can get a 3rd Ultima Weapon and a Ragnarok, since I got rid of my first one for a Lightbringer. Hopefully I should be done with the game in a week or so. I also forgot to mention I have 15 Celestriads.

I've got my Locke with the Genji Glove, Master's Scroll, and 2x Ultima Weapon. Combine that with the spell Quick and the fact that each hit takes 9,999 damage and you have just about 160,000 damage of instant rape in two straight turns. :shifty: On a different note though, I'm hating the Dragon's Den. It's like the Phoenix Cave except ten times worse and more annoying. I'm probably only halfway through it. Now I'm just posting to say that I'm done playing Final Fantasy VI Advance finally after a little over a month. My game time went probably a few hours over 100 hours, I'm guessing anyways since the game timer stops at 99:59. I pretty much did everything in the game, except get the only two Rages I needed for Gau which would be Gorgimera and Zeveak. Considering I've spent probably three hours on the Veldt and have yet to run into them, I'm not bothering with it anymore. I'm satisfied with my playthrough and if I can't ever get a perfect Rage list, then so be it. Everything else has satisfied me otherwise. I think I might actually play Final Fantasy VII next.
