View Full Version : Using my TV as a monitor, part 2

I discovered that my gfx card has an s-video port, so I started searching for TV's with S-video ports. I'm pretty sure most modern/hi-def TV's have an S-video port.

In the meantime, I discovered that the RF modulator that I bought to hook up my DVD player to my TV has an S-video port as well. My problem with these ports is that they're not labeled. I don't know if they're s-video out or in. So, I bought an s-video cable, and plugged one side into my comp, and the other side into my modulator.

However, my TV is not showing my computer screen. I suspect one of three things is wrong:

1) I didn't restart my comp after plugging in my s-video cable
2) I still have my monitor plugged in, so that's the default output
3) Both ports are "OUT" or "IN"
4) The S-video port in the modulator is "out" and s-video on my gfx card is "in", in which case I can watch TV on my 'puter, perhaps, but that's the opposite of what I'm aiming for

So, if y'all could help me figure out what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it.

My gfx card is a GeForce4 MX 4000 (old, I know).
My RF modulator is a RadioShack brand with coax in, coax out, RCA (that red, yellow, white wires) in, and S-video. It also has an Ohms setting between 75 and 1K.

If anyone can explain what any of that is (especially that ohms business) I'd be especially grateful. Thank you in advance for your time and wisdom.

cant help you with the ohms or anything, but the s-video port on the compy is almost definitly "out" rather than in. restarting shouldnt mean crap, so i'd say the s-video on your modu-whatsit is also "out". there may be something in its instruction manual that can help you?

instructions sure would be nice; I'm pretty sure I lost the box ages ago  thanks for your help though. I'll search the intarweb for instructions and see what I can find

if this (http://www.radioshack.com/sm-rf-modulatorvideo-component-adapter--pi-2103095.html) is your radioshack whatsit then s-video is "in". yus! so um the problem must lie somewhere else.. are you using the coaxial cable to connect to your TV rather than the AV cables?
