Basically, my room mate sucks. I need a program that will put passwords on select folders, anyone know where I can get one?

Well, a quick google search showed a few programs that are able to do this, but they're all like $40-60 (though they have free downloads, not sure what the restrictions on the freeware are) so I guess it depends how important the files are to you. You could always make a PC wide password, or if this is a computer you share you could make seperate accounts with a password, but if your room mate knows anything about computers he can probably get around the password. Or you could try the old fashion method of just beating your room mates *** when he's looking at your private stuff.

I found one and it was horrible, anyway its a program to put a password on a folder so to access a specific folder you need to input a password.

no matter what way you do it if your roommates smart at all he'll probably be able to get around it.

Why don't you password protect you profile and put administrative restrictions on thier account. Unless thisd of course is their computer and you should not be locking them out of whatever you are putting on their pc.

...

Its my laptop, it has a password, but I usually don't log out, especially when I've been drinking, and my room mate is as dumb as a door nail.

Its like he physically goes on my computer when im out, even though he has his own.

Is it possible to do that on Ubuntu?

Excuse me while I track you down, burst into your dorm, and write it on your forehead in felt-tipped marker.

1) make a habit of logging out before you leave/ get drunk
2) get a lock, or put it in some sort of locking case
3) threaten death

Not funny. My sister went delusional on me this morning and kicked the hell out of me because she wanted to go on the computer.

Set it to automatically lock itself after a set amount of time.

Um what you could do is encrypt all your "special files" its free and should work granted I don't need to do that so haven't actually tried it myself. Just right click on the folder(s) and select encrypt then set your password. Everytime you want to access that folder then it should ask for the password.

Winzip/Winrar (compressed folders) does password protection...

set your screensaver to require a password to unlock your comp. I think MSword also allows you to create a password lock on your documents.

Ya, both MSword and openoffice.org have psswrd protect.

In MSword you can choose between a password to view the document along side a password for editing.

When I need to leave for awhile, i use Window Key+L that instantly logs out while keeping your stuff running.

Only works well if you use window xp and have a password.

If you take a minute to not get smashed, and log the hell out of your computer, it will solve all of this. Thats what I do.

I'm serious! It was like 8 yesterday morning and I'm always on for my quiet time super early and my sister comes downstairs and is pissed that I'm on so early. I said that she's never gonna beat me down the stairs and that I'm on the comp until an adult comes downstairs and tells otherwise.
She threw a **** fit, sat on me so that she could get on, kicked me a couple times, and tried to BITE ME.
(I can show you bruises if you like.)

hmmm, that's a tough problem. Looks like the only way to fix it is to reformat the hard-.drive.
