Raziel took a deep breath, to either side of the path were vast paddy fields, farmers attending to there crops, to the east was the Minara moutain range that marked the very edge of the water nation, northbound was North guard forest and within that there destination, eastways were more feilds that eventually gave way to the coastline, the sentinal Ilsands and eventually Atlantis the capital of the Hydromancers. Southways lead to the great Asana river and eventually the tail end of the Minara range. Beyond that was the realm of the Pyromancers.

(( I figured Atlantis would be good for the water capital, not sure bout the others but I thought possibly Laputa for Air? Big flying castle type thing? ))

Rayne was in awe of the scenery about them. She reveled in her new environment, enjoying the freedom that her Water village never gave her.

Mirabelle looked around, and finally heard Jason's voice.
Jason! You're alright! she cried, running up to him. Blinking back tears, she reminded herself that she was a soldier, and grinned at him.
I would like to return, she said, suddenly hearing a call. Firex descended into the middle of the battlefield and cried softly.
Oh, Firex! I told you to stay home! the young lieutenant exclaimed, rushing over to hug the pheonix.
Never mind! Just listen next time.

Jason glanced over at Mirabelle and gave her a tight smile. "Did you expect otherwise, that I wouldn't be alright? Give me some credit."

Despite that, his face said otherwise. Physically he was fine, but he was mental and emotional wreck. His mood shifted from deep depression to blazing rage to completely numb, over and over again, all within the cycle of a few minutes.

Raziel turned around and walked backwards so he could talk ot Shinji, "Well Shinji if there ever was a reason not be in the military this is it." he spread his arms out dramatically towards the scenerey "You just gotta love the freedom of being a mercanery".

Shinji gave a smile to Raziel and then shifted his eyes to take in all that lay around them. The trees seemed greener out here, and the grass a bit softer under his sandaled feet. Taking in a deep breath, he noticed that the air even seemed cleaner. Perhaps this was all just because he no longer felt like a caged bird, or could be attributed to Raziel's return. Whatever the case, Shinji liked it much more than he could express or admit.

Her face tightening up, Mirabelle managed to avoid crying.
Jason, you don't get it! When that earthquake rippled through, I thought I had lost you! You don't realize how hard it is... and with Firex... she gasped out, trying to swallow the tears rising up.
You were right! I never should have continued as a soldier, I should have just become a medic when I could! I didn't do anything at all just then! she cried, finally allowing the tears to flow. Turning, she ran off, calling back.
I just want to be alone for a while!

"I completely agree," Rayne said enthusiastically. "Being a mercenary is much better than being in the military guard where you do not get to go anywhere and you don't get to do anything other than what people tell you to do."

((here I am passed out on the ground after saving thousands of hydromancer civilians, and not one of them could spare me a single drop of water v.v))

Vladamir woke up all of a sudden.. just because!! He was a bit disoriented and couldn't see his team. It's funny, he usually was a lone assasin... or farmer -_-;, but now he felt part of a team. " Some medic that girl was, and that commander looks pisseedd, looks like it is time for revenge." Vladamir liked revenge. There was this one village he visited when he was a kid. It was a small settlement in between a big forest. It had an awesome bakery that made the finest donuts. The baker on the other hand was not a fine man, so one day Vladamir made a potion that made the baker trip out and see spiders and bugs and stuff. Needless to say Vladamir couldn't help but think of donuts.

Jason was surprised by Mirabelle's outburst and subsequent retreat. "I, uhh...hoo...I'll never understand women."

Looking around, he saw Vladamir begin to stir. He walked over and offered a hand. "You did well, Geomancer. I'm afraid to say it, but you're starting to grow on me. What say you, care for a march on Fire?"

[master terrence]

Vladamir grinned, "I call shotgun." From the looks of things, vladamir wasn't going to stay around and help re-build the village. He already planted some seeds... and um... paved some canals.. with the earthquake and everything. -_-; Come to think of it, he had no intention of staying here at all, not even from the beginning. "No point in staying here anyways! what the hell kind of water village doesn't have a water slide?!?!"

[Delta-Pheonix]

Raziel looked up and checked the postion of the sun, it was going well past midday. "Hmmmm looks like were behind schedule" he said to himself, he stopped to survey the scenerey and spotted a copse of trees not to far away.
Raziel hopped off the path and beckoned the others to follow him.

Rayne followed closely behind Raziel. "Where are we going? Are we making camp for the night?"

[Delta-Pheonix]

Raziel nodded "It'll be dark soon no sense in wandering in the dark" he confirmed.

[Kali-chan]

Mirabelle sat on the edge of a lake, crying, as she let her fingers in the water. Giggling when a bit of steam let off, she blinked.
Maybe I shouldn't have run off. Well, it was in my best interest, I needed to be alone...

Jason laughed at Vladamir's rhetorical question. "Perhaps there were plans for one, but they never got around to it."

He looked around, his face changing from a smile to a slight frown. He glanced over at Vladamir. "Go track down Gregory and bring our wagon over. There's something I have to do."

Without waiting for a response he strode off. His step seemed to have a purpose to it, and he seemed sure of himself despite his unfamiliarity with the area.

Sure enough, when Jason reached his destination he stood looking at a lake, and down by the water's edge crouched Mirabelle. Though her back was turned to him, he could tell by the way she shook that she was crying. Though he was not trying to, he walked with almost completely silent steps, making his way to Mirabelle's side. Before she noticed his presence he spoke. "Whatever it is that I said or did, dear Mirabelle, I apologize from the bottom of my heart. Admittedly, I don't know what I said or did that so offended you, but it must have been bad to have hurt you so. If I can do anything to make it up to you, short of breaking off this coup, I will do it. So please...please forgive me." With those words he fell to his knees, head bowed in supplication. This would have seemed odd to any military man, a major prostrating himself to a lieutenant.

[Kali-chan]

Mirabelle turned teary-eyed to Jason and shook her head.
That was... terrible, what happened to the village, she said, remembering a talk with a certain hydromancer.
~Rayne~ she thought, taking Jason's hands and pulling him up.
You did nothing wrong, my dear, I was in shock. Although you did scare me after the earthquake. I really thought I had lost you...

Jason gripped Mirabelle's hand firmly. "Darling, you will never lose me. I will fight my way back through the Nine Gates of Hell to get back to your side."

He looked over at the Fire army which he had so easily taken over. "It has begun. There is no turning back now. We will rejoin with the Third Firestrike and conquer Fire." He fell silent for a moment, watching the troops mill back and forth. "I am quite probably leading many of them to their deaths. In all honesty, I'm not certain we'll succeed. Even should we defeat the armies surrounding Fire, I don't know if I can go toe to toe with the Two Generals. They are the leaders for a reason."

"Oh..." Rayne was slightly embarrassed for not realising the obvious. She mentally beat herself over the head.

[Kali-chan]

Mirabelle nodded.
I'll be one of those soldiers you lead into Fire. I'll fight for your cause, and I will do what I can to help you succeed. It's all for the hope of peace, right? she announced, her eyes falling upon the ring around her finger.
You might not alone be able to go against the Two, but with companions behind you, you can't lose hope. I will stand behind you, and I think you can count on Vladamir, although we will have to ask him. And Firex will rise above me, with his help, I'm sure we will be fine. Yes, trust me, Jason, you have loyal followers who do not care about death. If we should die, then we will die together! and with the end of her speech, she leaned forward and kissed the man of her dreams.

As Vladamir went to fetch the carriage, he had saw an old lady, then a sick man, a rotting corpse, and then a soldier gazing into the sun with blood on sweat glistening on his face. It was then that Vladamir had an epiphany. We are going back with a large military force on top of the one Jason commands. Maybe with the help of the hydromancers, we can not only end this feud, but gain a little power for ourselves. Vladamir got in the carriage and rode back into the village.

Jason, caught off guard, went rigid for a moment, then wrapped his arms around his beloved Mirabelle, drawing her closer, and returned her kiss with equal passion. When they finally broke this kiss he looked deep into her eyes. "I will never see you harmed, dear Mirabelle. If we stand together, then by God, I'll see to it we survive!"

He held her close for a good while longer, then finally, unwillingly, broke the contact. He offered her his arm. "Shall we go lead an army, Lieutenant Mirabelle?"

[Kali-chan]

She nodded, smiling happily. The kiss had given her renewed strength, and she was ready.

Major Markham, let's go. she said, her face lit up.

The men of the Second Brushfire division of the Fire armies looked up as one to see Major Jason Markham emerge from the smoke and mist, Lieutenant Mirabelle ((She needs a last name...)) walking beside him. Without looking to either side, Jason and Mirabelle walked to the wagon, where sat Vladamir and Gregory. Jason lifted Mirabelle up into the wagon, then turned to face the assembled army. "Spread out and commandeer any food you find in this city. Harm no one, but detain anyone who resists."

A Marine, clearly an officer by his slightly scorched uniform let out a noise of protest. "You can't take our food! We'll all die if you do that!"

Jason faced the Hydromancer. "And what concern is that of mine? When the lives of my companions and myself were in danger, did you grant us sanctuary when we begged for it? No. So why should your lives mean anything to me? Be glad I have ordered my men not to harm any of you. Although now that you've made me think..." He raised his voice so that the Second Brushfire could hear him. "I withdraw my order concerning the restraint of any who resist. You now have permission to kill anyone who resists. Dismissed!"

"No...how could you be so heartless?"

"The same way you could be just as heartless. Now begone from my presence, worm. The only way I will rescind that order is if you get down on your knees and beg me, just as I begged you before. I will show that I have more mercy that you do."

((Delta Phoenix, I leave the Hydromancer's response and actions to you.))

Mirabelle watched in pride as Jason ordered the men to go into the city. Her pride, however, was slowly weakened a bit by his order to kill any who resisted.

~Well, they did do the same to us...~ she thought, worried. Looking over at Gregory and Vladamir, she fingered her ring.

Major... she whispered, thinking about the faces of some of the people she had saved, and suddenly, Rayne's face popped into her head.

I'm not feeling too well... she moaned, climbing deeper into the wagon and laying down.

((Well, I WAS going to let Delta Phoenix deal with it, but since he's apparently gone AWOL...))

The Hydromancer glared at Jason in defiance, and his stare was met with ice cold eyes which barely covered the fires of rage burning behind them. For a moment, the Hydromancer was afraid. This was Jason Markham, infamous in Water for his tactical and strategic genius, his ferocity in battle, and his devastating rage. The man hesitated still, but as the screams of the first few unfortunate civilians who tried to resist split the air he quickly dropped to the ground, prostrating himself before the major. "Please, Major Jason Markham, I beg of you, spare the people of Water. Please..."

Jason glanced down at the Marine. "On one condition. The remainder of the Marines left in this area will join my army. Understood?"

The Marine looked up at Jason in surprise. "J-join you? But why?"

"Answer quickly. The longer you delay, the more innocent lives that will be lost."

"Yes, yes! We will join you!"

"Good." Jason immediately sent up a series of coloured flames into the air, calling all troops to return to the deployment zone. Within minutes the men and women of the Second Brushfire had returned, standing at attention. Jason looked down at the Marine. "This is why a military government is the greatest form. Each and every person is trained to obey orders and to fight from the age of 6 to the age of 16, regardless of whether or not they have flame powers. Because of this obedience is immediate. We are a well-oiled machine, and we shall eventually trample over the bogged-down debacles that are the governmets of the other nations. For now, though, I must remove the cancer in Fire, and I would appreciate the aid of Water Marines in this endevour. That's where you come in."

He climbed up into the wagon, noting the supine form of Mirabelle in the back. He turned to the combined forces of Fire and Water under his command. "Move out!" He nodded to Gregory, indicating for him to start the wagon moving, then climbed in the back to be by his beloved's side. "Mirabelle, I'm sorry. It had to be done."

Mirabelle managed a small smile as the cart started to move.

I understand, Jason, she said softly. Sitting up, she leaned on Jason's shoulder.

I see you picked up an army to join us... she mumbled, forcing the nausea building up inside her to remain down.

Jason shook his head. "A few rag-tag survivors. I'm hoping they'll at least be able to weaken the defenses of any Fire troops that resist us."

He lifted her face and looked into her eyes. "I wish I could convince you to leave us and go somewhere safe, but I know you'd never listen. Just promise me you won't do anything foolish, alright?"

'Whereas I will be doing the most foolish thing of all. Such is the terrible truth of war.'

[Delta-Pheonix]

Raziel quikly gathered some fire wood and and began to rummage in his bag for the tinder, "Ok so who's got the food?"

Rayne rummaged in her pack saying as she did, "Um...I think I do...somewhere. Ah. Here it is."
She pulled out a few wrapped cloths of dried provisions and handed them to Raziel.

[Delta-Pheonix]

Raziel smiled "Excellent, once we get into the forest we can hunt game and pick herbs, but jerkey and rice balls will do for tonight."

[Kali-chan]

Mirabelle smiled.

I wouldn't leave your side for the world, she breathed, taking his hand.

[blackknight]

He squeezed her hand firmly, reassuringly. "Nor I yours. I worry for you, though. Nothing will change that."

Gregory called back, informing him that they would soon be at the border of the nation of Fire. Jason smiled grimly. "Things are going to "heat up" soon. Are you ready?"

[Kali-chan]

Please, don't worry. I might be more of a medic, but I can still fight. Who was it who avenged the major? Mirabelle joked, cringing as soon as she said that.

Sorry, there was no need for me to bring that up...

She remembered his despair upon hearing of the major's death.

A look of pain flashed briefly across Jason's face at the mention of the late Major Pendrik Greer, but he quickly concealed it. "Don't worry about it, darling. What's done is done."

He locked her gaze with his. "But that also argues against you. The Major was no pushover. If he can be slain...Just be extremely careful, alright? If you die my life will have no meaning."

He thought for a moment. "Mirabelle, could I borrow Firex for awhile? I'd like to have him take a message to the Third Flamestrike, have them meet us at the border."

[Kali-chan]

Looking down into her lap, Mirabelle smiled, although her hair was covering her face.

Don't worry. I'll be careful, she said quickly. Still looking down, she considered his request.

Of course you can borrow Firex. Now where is he? she asked just as quickly. Looking up, she spotted the pheonix flying above them.

Firex!

Firex descended to their level and flew along side the wagon.

Jason has a request for you. Pleas listen.

Jason quickly scratched out a note, then fastened it around the bird's leg. "Take this to Lieutenant Hagan Kipone of the Third Flamestrike. Fly with all speed, Firex, for it is imperative that this message gets to him as soon as possible. Our continued existence may depend on it."

The phoenix nodded once, then lifted off, powerful wingbeats carrying him swiftly away. Jason watched him go, and murmured, "Godspeed Firex."

Mirabelle watched Firex fly away and turned back to Jason.

If he manages to catch up to us ususally starting a day after us, then he can make it, I know he can.

Jason nodded, praying that the bird would be fast enough. "Come on, let's keep going."

Less than an hour later they reached the border of Water and Fire. As they crossed over and headed deeper into his homeland, Jason grew more and more nervous. His instincts told him that something was not right.

Suddenly, the ragged band of Fire and Water troops was surrounded by a fresh and well-rested army of Fire. Jason raised his hand, indicating a halt. "Who are you, that you would stop me me from returning home?"

"Major Jason Markham, you are hereby charged with high treason against the nation of Fire. The punishment for this sentence is death. How do you plead?"

"I plead not guilty, while at the same time accusing the Two of the same crime. Now release me and let me continue, that I might exact the prescribed punishment."

The leader of this army of pyromancers drew his sword and leveled it at Jason's throat. "You will climb down from that cart and surrender yourself and your army. If you cooperate we will be merciful to your renegade army..." Before he could finish, the officer was leveled by a lightning-quick blow from Jason's staff.

Jason jumped down from the cart, screaming orders. "Amoeba formation! First and second layers composed of able-bodied pyromancers! Hydromancers in the third row, create shielding for those in front. All injured in the center as reinforcements!"

He unleashed a gout of flame, forcing back the troops who tried to seize him. He looked at them in disdain. "Don't you know who I am?"
