This is just rant but I really don't like him in the anime, it hard for me to find anything good about him.
From the beginning he seen as a**hole from trying to rise his mother from dead which I have no clue why he thought he could pull it off while many others fail, and his brother try to tell him many times they should not do it, but he blow him off.
He huge hypecrite, when scar was on the hunt and edward first battle with him. Ed actually say this line when he know why scar was killing State Alchemist "Revenge does not bring back anything people should be happy with what they have" (I know it is the not the exact line).
I was like wow he had the nerve to say that after trying revive his mother, and now looking for Philosopher's Stone to clean up his mess saying it in front his brother too. Where does he get off he has any right to talk like he on moral ground after his actions.
That what most series he does, ignore any warning and advise that people give him and act high and mightly half the time.
I realise that fullmetal actually mean stubbron, but Ed takes it to a new level.

Well, he can be a pain in the arse, but I'll defend them on some levels.
I think Ed knows he made a huge mistake by trying to revive his mom, so that's why he told the Scar that line while he was attacking the state alchemist. He probably felt he should have been happy living with his brother, because if he was, he wouldn't have destroyed their lives the way they did.
Then again, he is trying to get his body parts back, so he's not exactly following that either. But I think he is doing it more so for Al's sake rather than his, since Al got the worst end of the whole deal.
And yes, Ed was stupid for trying to bring his mom back. I think he realized that later on. In the episode where he was worried about whether or not Al hates him for what he did, I think that kinda tells you he knew what he did was dumb.

What he said. Ed tried something that didn't work and learned from it. Passing on that knowledge to someone else does not make him a hypocrite. He is trying to prevent him from doing something he would regret.
Hes trying to find the stone so they can fix their mistake. Nothing wrong with that. Ed feels responsible for what happened to Al and I think that is the main reason he is looking for the stone. Their is a big difference in what their doing.
Yes he is stubborn but he didn't really do anything in the entire series that made it a impact in a negative way. He ignores what the military tells him to do because he couldn't care less about the military. He is using them only for their sources and Mustang is ok with that because he will get the information Ed and Al get. Its mutual. Everything he does is for himself and his brother. Selfish yes, but not exaggerating to your extent.

I feel the reason Ed attempted to bring their mother back to life and felt they could do it when others had failed was simply because he was a child. Children think they know everything, and children are constantly striving to exceed their parents. Their father's notes said that human transmutation was impossible, so Ed had to prove him wrong. Ultimately his father was proven right, but children make mistakes, learn from them, and grow from the experience. Ed is not going around trying to ressurect their mother again, correct? He is trying to correct hismistake by restoring their bodies. He's not going to go right back to reviving their mother once (if) it happens.

It happened twice at the end of the series. Al brought back Ed and Ed brought back Al.

Yeah, I just finished the series today, so I saw that. Kinda disappointing how it ended up.
And how close is the anime to the manga? I gave up after a certain point, due to the mangling of the story the anime did. Not really bad, but I can't tell what's consistent until I read more of the manga.

You should watch the movie. It will help with the series ending.
As for its manga counterpart. No idea. I dispise Manga and comics alike.

the manga wanders well off the anime storyline, even the Humunculi are different... I just started the manga, but I've heard from others

Let me tell all of you this now. THE MANGA IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THEN THE ANIME. Different characters... alot longer... more development for the humonculous... and some of the humonculous are completly different then in the anime. Also, there is no Dante.

that's what i've heard. I've heard
Sloth, Wrath, and Pride aren't the same as in the anime because humunculi aren't created from a failed human transmutation, there's someone(something?) called Father to guide them
is that right?

Yay! So you know about badass daddy! (I've been forced to call him this because he is so strong. I mean how strong could he be!?)
How far are you?

I agree. Boys of that age don't exactly have the greatest impulse control as it is, and Ed seems particularly prone to act first, think later. But he does learn from his mistakes.
That said, he does have at least one annoying trait. The whole going chibi every time someone called him short got old REALLY fast. Dude, you're short. Get over it.

I actually enjoy the 'short thing' (sorry, Ed), it gives Ed a humourous side! Also, when Winry tries to get him to drink milk, he's not normally funny, it gives fans(well, me) a chance to laugh at him, instead of crying over his hardships

Sure it was funny--the first ten times he did it. Then it just got old, IMO. As for him not being normally humorous...He does plenty of funny things without the redundant running gag. Like how he reacts when he accidentally grabs the Psiren's boob when they're fighting. (One of my favorite scenes) It's not slapstick, but it's still funny. And his little sarcastic remarks and asides. I found that kind of thing much funnier than him freaking out over being called pipsqueak for the hundredth time. Dark humor, sure, but still funny.

Well actually, if Ed didn't try to bring his mom back, FMA wouldn't exist...eh, we wouldn't even be discussing this at that rate...

Yeah. I agree. I like Edward even though he can be kind of annoying. He adds alot of character to the show and his mistakes/antics keep it unpredictable and interesting imo.

In Ed's defence, when my mother died all I could think of was getting her back. it's the same for Ed, just he had a possible way of getting her back, thought the chance was small he had to take it. he now sees his mistake, but when he was doing it he wasn't thinking rationally, but rather through his emotions. I also like Ed, and empathies with his character.

But he's so cute in the anime! LOL XD

No matter how stubborn he is though, I still like him in the anime. He is way different from the manga Ed, though.
