OK, everyday there is at least 3 spam bots. They are getting to be annoying.
Now are these humans making these so there is basically no way to stop them? Or are they bots that can be stopped somehow?
Cause i kno wi am not the only one who is sick of them.

Are you one of them? ;)
I think they're mostly just bots. I've been seeing it happend around forums more then ever lately.

Honestly I'm more sick of all the pathetic trolling and horrendous amounts of fail I see during my daily visits to this forum. It's getting so that I can barely click a single thread without suffering a fit of apoplexy from the snarky nature of the responses.

I couldn't agree with you more Soluzar. Infact I was thinking the same thing when I first read this thread. It's a bit nauseating at times.

What we do on my forum is put a block so that new members cannot post clickable URL links within their first dozen or so posts. This usually throws a wrench into a spambot's works because they're designed to copy/paste a URL filled pile of code. If it's a human being, they'll have to manually edit their copy/pasted crap to make the urls into a non-clickable format (which slows them down).
I think it's a decent defense against spammers. Legitimate members will stay around until they have enough posts to start posting URLs.

Regarding the spam: It's getting worse. How many spam threads have I reported daily? How many times have I had to wait for the forum search feature to catch up, so that I could report multiple spam threads?
Regarding the trolling: Given that I'm responsible for a percentage of this trolling, I won't throw too many stones. -_-;
Regarding the inability of several AN forum members to discuss certain topics without degenerating into flames and insults: it's disappointing to see, and it reflects very poorly on the maturity of those particular members. For an example, see the thread on... ah, you can't. It's been deleted.

This is the same thing I've been saying for a while now. A forum that my sis is on have a rule that you need to have at least a dozen or two post before you can start a thread or post any link. I think this would be a lot better that nothing at all.

An argument could be made, I suppose, that allowing spambots to make their own threads makes it easier for those threads to be deleted. if spambots couldn't make their own threads, then we'd be one spambot upgrade away from seeing spam pop up in the middle of peoples' threads, which would be harder to delete.
As a programmer, I realize there's no perfect solution. But I guess it would be nice to know that AN is looking into solutions for the problem. I realize it would defeat the purpose to say which solutions, of course.

I've noticed allot more spam lately to, I like the idea Gibb gave. I wonder if it has something to do with the forum software upgrade I've noticed a little more since the upgrade.

Regarding the trolling: Given that I'm responsible for a percentage of this trolling, I won't throw too many stones. -_-;I said 'pathetic' trolling. I specifically mean those people who want to troll, but aren't even creative or intelligent enough to be able to do it with a sense of style. When an intelligent member such as yourself decides to start trolling, it's actually quite entertaining to all but those on the wrong end of it. I know that view I just expressed is like saying "****" in church, but you all know it's true. :P
Actually, what bugs me the most is people who want to debate, but can't put together an argument to save their lives. I feel physical pain reading thier posts.

This (http://animenation.net/forums/showthread.php?t=194493) one is a good example. Read the latter part of the thread especially, if you want to see a really, really terrible 'debate'.

Gibb, what forum software are you using? Any solution would have to be less work than just reporting/deleting the threads. A hold on creating new threads can just create more posts from members trying to get to the 'create a thread' level quickly, and defeats the point of our support forums, which is to sign up to post about an issue...

this will also help stop the hentai seekers. the people that post one time asking what hentai to watch and stuff.

I'm using vB 3.6, same as Animenation. My brother was the one who set up the rule to keep links out of the first however many posts, so I need to figure out what he did and get back to you.
edit: It looks like it's a plugin. The plug just disallows URL and IMG tags from being used for the first ## of posts. My forum is set to 10, but you can use any number. If you dont tell new people what the number is, then they wont try to get 10 posts really fast just to spam some URL links.
i dont know the exact name of the plug in, but the title is "No Links or Images Allowed for People with Fewer t" version 1.1 according to my admincp.

I made some changes to the image verification system, it makes it a little harder for some actual people to see what the characters in the image are, but should make it a lot harder for spambots. We'll see how it goes over the next few days and work from there.

Aside from this one, all is quiet spam wise so far.

Prons, you're better off using the report post/thread function. This way, all admin and mods are alerted of the report via e mail. I happened to browse this thread before going to work and saw your post. Ok, I admit it, I follow you around, Prons :P . Either way, reporting's better, alerts more people, gets spam sliced cleanly.
