When is the original Gundam series going to be sold in the US as sub so I don't have to limit my mecha to Neon Genesis Evangelion (and soon, Gunbuster)?

I want to get into only one of these Gundam series, and it's got to have a sub option on the sold DVD and can't be more than 55 episodes. How about it? I hear this Seed thing is good, but I also hear it sucks...

I was thinking the original MSG because I think it's simple and stuff, and it's the orginal story, unless the creator planned or at least directed all those other series, too.

Mobile Suit Gundam may never be available subbed on DVD. It has only recently been released on DVD in Japan, in fact. It's a shame, but the dub is excellent. Unless you are deaf, and require the subs to enjoy anime at all, it should still please you.

SEED doesn't suck. It's very derivative of Mobile Suit Gundam, but re-interpreted in a modern style. There are aspects of this which work, and aspects which don't work. Personally I enjoyed it a lot, but it wasn't as good as Mobile Suit Gundam. The direct sequel series, Gundam SEED: Destiny is another matter entirely. It starts out pretty strong, but the quality of writing towards the end is not as good as Gundam SEED was. It was dissapointing more than bad, but it was also... pretty bad.

Just go with the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy if you want it subbed.
Only downside is you still don't get the original Japanese track. Its a new Japanese track with changed sound effects & music. Not as good as the originak track(which you can get on VHS but its rare) but the new 5.1 track sounds amazing with the sound effects. Although I prefer the classic sound effects more.

I do believe that we will get Mobile Suit Gundam TV subbed on DVD. It will just be a LONG time.

Damn it! I always forget about the movies when someone asks this questions.

Yeah, I also recommend going with the movie editions--honestly, the overall impression that you get of MSG may actually end up being better since some of the series' low points were trimmed while the best parts were left intact (and, in some cases, expanded with new footage).

As for the question of whether or not the various other series were planned by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam..

Well, he directed all of the direct sequels to the original series, which include Zeta Gundam, Double Zeta Gundam, and the Char's Counterattack movie. He directed Victory Gundam, which was set in the relatively far future of the original series' timeline (the Universal Century). In addition, in 1999, he directed Turn-A Gundam, a series which united the alternate universes of the Gundam series that weren't created by him under a single roof through a complex tale of history being lost. Stylistically, this Gundam series is one of the least-conventional ones, as it is set in an early industrial society.

However, Mr. Tomino has said before that he was forced into making the sequels to Gundam and would perhaps have preferred if the series had ended after the original.

The story told in the original series is pretty much self-contained, but Zeta ends on a cliffhanger and leaves many plot threads open. Some are resolved in Double Zeta, and CCA, and some have never received a proper conclusion (outside of Japanese-only novels).
