I remember seeing on a show called Max X that there are places East that flay, gut, cook, and serve fish while they are still alive (This video Pale's on comparison to the one i saw, seeing the poor fish being eaten while it was gasping for air mutilated is not something im sure allot of you would want to see) Im no peta Nazi but i don't think I'd mind if they cracked down on this (It would be a welcome change for them to do something actually useful and not kill our pets >_< ) I know it's another culture and all but this just makes my stomach churn. what are your thought's on this?

Thats not the point of the post, it's one thing to process a cow for its meat its a whole different thing to be sticking your fork into it while its still alive and breathing on your table "partially processed". like i said im no Peta Nazi I eat meat daily but i certainly wouldn't want to eat it that way.

I just read the title of your thread and thought, WTF? of course sushi is raw. and then you speak as if it's unusually to flay fish as soon as you catch them, My cousin fishes all the time and does exactly this. they're about to be killed and eaten anyway i see no reason why this should be strange. and on the topic of small house hold aquarium fish. what's so wrong about that? animals eat them alive in the wild all the time.
you know whats disturbing? in the middle east, they sell live Kittens, you know what for? if this doesn't settle your stomach then i doubt what i would tell you about the kittens would.

I was focusing more on the fact that they are served cooked but still alive while being dug into with chopsticks. I know animal's eat things alive but usaully they devour them in seconds as apposed to 10 minutes of being grilled and picked at by chop sticks. Being eaten while still alive is pretty high up there on the "worst way to go" list. (Gotta love zombie horror films.... just be sure to watch the classic's and not the crappy remakes)

ummmm, its not like fish comes precut or anything....
Plus i remember a study somewhere that said fish cant feel pain.
DId you know you can also basically eat fish right out of the lake? Just sink your teeth right into them.
We are animals, and at the top of the food chain. Our bodies were made to eat other animals. You gotta cook/eat/clean them somehow.
In some asian places they still have dog meat. But it isnt like they steal pet dogs from people homes....Heck, hamster and or guine pig is a popular dish in SE asia.

Perhaps as a consumer I've been desensitized a bit, I get meat, cook it, and eat it without ever seeing the process it took to get that way. And i guess i also have this image in my head that the first instinct creatures have is to kill something and then eat it. I dunno I just got this bad feeling when i saw a fish served half cooked and covered in sauce while it was still gasping for breath (And seeing them take pieces out of it with chop sticks just looked so painful). but for all i know the process of being packaged could be far more painful, I've heard about fish not feeling pain though Ill have to wiki it to see what the theory is based on.

Most people do think that meats come from the grocery store. They never think that the steak they are eating is a cut out piece of a cow.
Its about survival, humans need meat to survive. It is in our genetics, and you can see that by just looking at our teeth that we are carnivores.
And if people want me to stop eating meat.... I made a deal with the animals, once they stop tasting good, i will stop eating them.

lol i'm a little bit of both, i understand where beaf comes from, but i'd rather let the people who do that for a living handle with the messy stuff.
ever have a pig roast? i have, and it was the freakiest thing i've ever seen.
yes they eat kittens in the middles east, so i've heard.
but i'd have to say the spookiest dish i've seen was fried squid, ever since i saw 20000 leigues under the see, squid just never brought my apitite to a stand still.

True, it's allot more effective to show a commercial about a family enjoying thanksgiving then it is to show a cow on an assembly line getting chopped

Of course I couldn't go a whole week without at least 1 serveing of chicken or steak. It just seems weird to me to eat something while it's still breathing, it might be the imagery more so then the actual act though.

I've eaten fried squid before, all ill say is it was like chewing on rubber (for about 20 minutes) I've heard some ppl swallow them whole live and choke to death if the squid manage's to grab hold of your throat. (they must REALLY like the taste if they are willing to risk that.)

That would be some brazen Koreans, and those creatures would be octopi. =P
Yum. (I've had tako wraps raw myself, for sushi, it's quite horribly rubbery. Morseo then calamari)

I'd seriously like to see proof of this. Once you pass Human Embryology 101, you discover we are more similar to fish than we want to admit. Our ears, toungue, maxillary and mouth were once made out of the same anatomical structures that are the breathing apparatus of a ordinary fish. In the first 4 weeks of being the condensed genetic code of a sperm and an ova, we are no different or in any way special from a cow, bird, lizard or absolutely any animal that has a spinal cord you can think of. There's a reason why many universities still use chicken embryos to teach how babies are made. Sadly mine didn't though. They used to use bunnies but stopped by the time I was a student because of "budjet" concerns. ¬¬ Guess ripping bunny embryos to pieces was "too expensive" or something.
In some asian places they still have dog meat. But it isnt like they steal pet dogs from people homes....
Never tried the dish myself, but dog tacos are served in Mexico City. They like to use street dogs and freshly run down animals for the meat. And if you're thinking about the perils of transmitting rabies by using unsafe meat, I live in a country where people think cisticercosis eggs are a "delicacy". Believe me, they aren't scared.
--
I'm personally against animal cruelty. Just because you eat it doesn't give you the right to torture your meat. I personally hate bullfighting. What a painful way to kill your future hamburger.

They pick up dead dogs off the street to cook them? Thats nasty....
One of the many reasons i say avoid countries where you cant drink the tap water. You never know whether their food is clean.

Believe it or not, most of the time, it is cleaner than in this country.
Ever wonder why only the US inhabitants are shaped like pears, and everyone else isn't?

I agree to this statement, however, the point of about clean water depends on location. in New England it's not a every bad source, of course we use a well and a water filter but that's to test for harmful chemicals in the water that were put in the soil when it was used for farming. (yes my house is built smack dab in the middle of an old corn field.) but i don't normally drink tap water, even though it tastes fine, we have a water tank bubbler, for Poland spring water it's good water but it's a bit chili and the heater part doesn't work very well.

I've seen things worse. For example, dogs in China. They eat them all the time, as I am sure some of you know.
I suppose that killing a dog isn't any different from a cow. What justifies one of their lives being more important over the other? But still....I don't like the thought of eating a dog. I look at my dog, with her big brown eyes....I could not imagine doing something like that.
Anyways, in China, they believe that if you torture an animal before it dies, it will taste better. Sometimes they leash a dog up, drag it down the street while beating with with clubs. They also have these steamers for dogs/cats/goats. You put them in it, and it melts them alive. What a disgusting, horrible death. It may be normal over there, but I hate that so much that I almost have no respect for people who do that.
They could at least try to give it the most painless death possible instead of extending the torture. I am sure animals in other countries including my own have to suffer before they die, but in most cases they are killed pretty quickly, or so I hear.

Check this link. Scroll down to about a little past the middle of the page until you see the picture of the dog and the food. You will see two links in that post too, one telling about the steamers.
