I'm glad to see some of those bands on their, but I would dispute some of the positions (of course). It's old.

Ratt is on that list. And so many **** rock bands are in front of ZZTop. VH1 sucks

Blame the collective will of Viacom and the internet for the list. MC5 and the Velvet Underground contributed more to rock/metal besides Sabbath.

Did you just say Velvet Underground is more influential than Sabbath.

I'm pretty happy with the list.

Noise and feedback feature prominently in metal nowadays. Granted Sabbath did create metal, they held their technicality back due to Tony Iommi sustaining injuries while working at a machine shop, thus holding them back musically.

...Jimi Hendrix?
Good example but I was referring to more recent bands

Unsane
Boredoms
Mad Capsule Markets
Alec Empire
Big Black
Jesus Lizard
Morbid Angel
Coverge
ISIS
The Locust (a favorite of mine)

if Iggy Pop is on there, shouldn't Johny Cash be too.

What kind of criteria is this based on? I thought RATM was funk (but then I guess you can't confine them to one genre)

Sad to see Cream #16. They should be at least on top 10.

I agree with such a list.

Though Queen should be number 1.

Sorry, Freddie Mercury really doesn't deserve that.

As funk is primarily bass driven, and since RATM used unconventional techniques for their songs that were guitar driven they were thrown in. Iggy Pop's first band was as guitar driven as the MC5 but the antics were as much a part of the music as anything else. Johnny Cash never played a heavy chord in his life, yet he should have been included just on songwriting merit.

Nah I mean, wasn't Jimi Hendrix also one of the first to use Noise and Effects? I may be wrong though.

He wasn't the first. Tony Iommi gets the nod on that one, but Jimi just kicked it to the forefront.

Yeah, we as humans can't even comprehend his position, which is better than #1.

Anyway, since when was Jethro Tull "hard rock"? A gnome prancing around with a flute?

Tool is not prog, they are an amalgamation of metal and ambient.
ISIS is prog and a much better band in my opinion.

Most people I know seem to consider Isis to be Post-Metal. I'm not sure why bands like Queensryche are on there, myself.

Auqalung sure was badass though.

Tool sucks and should not be on any list.

Hard Rock is just a blanket term to cover pretty much every genre of music ever made.

Pshhhh, more like:

99. Bad Brains
97. Primus
91. The Misfits
81. The Pixies
75. Spinal Tap
66. Joan Jett
60. The New York Dolls
42. The Kinks
36. Frank Zappa

30. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
27. Iggy Pop
26. Motörhead
25. Cheap Trick
19. The Clash
17. The Ramones
13. Queen
4. AC/DC

Whitesnake? WTF? And also the list should really be pretty straight through backwards with acdc on the bottom and bad brains on the top.

props for bad brains, clash, zappa, kinks, iggy and primus. but honestly, ac/dc, queen, motorhead and spinal tap are the only bands that i would consider hard rock; its arguable but i think punk rock is fairly seperate from "hard rock". a lot of funky rock stuff in here too. might as well put up bootsy.

...and devo should be on here as well.

^Which is why they're low on the list. Have you ever heard their early albums? Most people I talk to only judge them by American Idiot, which was more of a political outcry than a music album.

I don't put much stock in VH1 and their so-called lists. They did a recent show on the 100 greatest songs of the 80s and their number one was Bon f**kin Jovi.

No Flock of Seagulls or Tears for Fears? Man, they suck now.

No Tears for Fears but I think they did have Seagulls on there because they were talking to the singer.

I loved Tears for Fears though; man they rocked. I wonder whatever happened to them?

They had one Depeche Mode song on there (I JUST CANT GET ENOUGH)...not even any of the Violator hits!

*puts on 80's Nerd Members Only jacket* Richard Mayfield went on to form his own band in 95 (Mayfield) and released two solo albums in 02 and 04. I have the unfoortunate distinction of being conceived to the hit song "Shout."

NO DM VIOLATOR? That's it. I'm watching The Tube for my 80's fix now.

No...AC/DC are an Austrailian/British hard rock band. Their original lead singer died back in the eighties sometimes. But they rock a lot harder then today's bands.

Another live show that has to be experienced is Alec Empire. He consistently overpowers the main stage in festivals and triggers heart attacks due to the massive amount of volume and sonic depth of his songs and equipment.
