Substantial.. well he's not that famous but folks in the (mainly NY and fans in Osaka) hip hop scene know him. I heard Pharrell does (maybe Chad too). Hell I think most rappers like anime, its a ghetto thing just like kung-fu movies. And Prons I remember barenaked ladies, I actually liked a couple of their songs if I remember correctly.
Wait do Japanese celebs count? Verbal occasionally makes reference to anime/manga characters. And tons of others like anime too.

-Robin Williams
-The Barenaked Ladies (they reference it in their song One Week, one of their bigger hits, actually).
-Aaron McGruder (author of the Boondocks) is another, hence the anime-styled characters of the cartoon.
-The Wachowski brothers made tributes to anime in The Matrix.
-Kind of stupid, I know, but Anna-Nicole Smith's son who died was a gamer/anime fan.
Not sure if this counts, but the writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation liked anime, and referenced Urusei Yatsura and Dirty Pair on a couple of episodes.

Overall, he's really into Ghibli films, Miyazaki and Takahata alike (Totoro and Grave are the only anime he included in his Great Movies books)... So far, the only anime I know he gave a thumbs down to was Howl's Moving Castle, but even then his essay review didn't even include anything plausible that made it bad--just shoddy comparisons to his last two works... Which sort of unfair, and weird that Roeper gave it a thumbs up... I believe he also gave a thumbs up for Metropolis (thumbs down from Roeper) and Kon's upcoming film, Paprika, might be up his alley too...
Oh, and I read in another forum that there's a band in the UK named Urusei Yatsura... KIYONE confirmed it to me... :P

But its impossible to find Japanese brands in the States. "Neighborhood" is a good brand too but tis to damn expensive. Why the hell do the Japanese and Europeans get the best clothing?? ><;

When I went to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers last October, during one song (I forget which), they had a video screen behind them showing a montage of some random manga(s) with the Japanese text still intact.

I used the psychotic break montage from End of Evangelion as a visual for a noise music performance in Japan.

Not to split hairs or anything, but the footage in the Girlfriend video was from Space Adventure: Cobra, not Uresei Yatsura.

He's known for dropping references to anime in his recent work too, but that video is his most well known. In fact, Matt Pinfield (former MTV VJ) dedicated a segment on an old special about video production to anime in videos.

There's a few celebrities who've decided to make their own manga.
My pet peeve is Courteney Love. Her manga, Princess Ai, is aweful in my opinion. If you have money, at least splurge it sensibly, and not into making a business in the mainstream society.

We have Japanese brand, MUJI, in England, which does some pretty good, albeit plain, clothing. Not sure if America has it, but it's definately something to look out for.

She's not really behind it that much; Ai Yawaza did the drawings while someone else came up with the story. I think if I read correctly, Courtney Love just suggested the story. But yeah...it's not exactly my cup of tea.

And.. I liked the art for Princess Ai.. but I agree, the storyline was non-existant and obviously a kick in Cobain's grave with the puns from his songs.

I would give an example but I'm afraid of hurting myself.
I didn't mind the puns, but Cobain's dead and his band didn't change the world. I say Princess Ai was decent.

How many times do I have to define the word 'Otaku' for those who misuse it? :P
Elitists need food, perhaps to drag then away from their source of giggles. If food doesn't do it, I'm afraid there is no hope for this world. :(

I'm old school so I was under the impression that otaku was still seen in a positive light in the English speaking fandom.

As an honorary elitist, I disagree as true elitists just use the collective term "nerd" or "geek". Those who use that term in question would also fit under one of the collective terms. This is of course strictly from an elitist stand point.
Oh and to add to the topic at hand, I just remembered that John Hodgman also likes anime.

Having spent much time there, it is jarring to a point. You get used to it and then you start to assimilate, slowly losing all traces of individuality. It's comforting enough that you don't notice until you return home.

Do you need to use erotica in a context? You can mean nothing by it, simply just say it.
"Erotica.."
Then again, I guess in that context, it would be self-ammusement.
