Da Ali G Show (hey, same as Crossbone. Nice)
Mortal Kombat, which I'm surprised I didn't have on my shelf of campiness
Snakes On A Plane
...and possibly Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest. I'm still debating whether or not to buy it or the original. Both have their high points and I rather like the design of the second.

Yeah, I want to save my money for video games or anime.
Sometimes I sell my old non-anime DVDs to my local FYE and they give money to me so I pay one new non-anime DVD with that money.

Are HDDVD's more expensive than the regular counterparts? Can they be read as quickly as reg DVD's on DVD players? Is the image quality that superior?
Seems like there's a lot of skepticism from the people to buy even the HD-DVD's which can be read in normal DVD players. I doubt anyone will buy Blu-rays.

HDDVDs require new players and better TV's to get the full experience.

New releases are about the same price. A new HDDVD will have a SRP of 29.99 and will usually be marked down to the 20 range like most standard dvds.
However, some HDDVDs come with an SRP of around 39.99 because they're hybrids. Meaning one side of the disc is the HD version and the other is the standard. These are typically marked down to 30.
You don't need to spend 5,000 dollars. I bought my 50" for 1200 I believe a few years ago.
It probably wouldn't be a bad time to upgrade really. By 2010 I believe (?) its going to be required by law that all broadcasting is available in HD. The shift is happening. Regular TV's won't be affected, but prices on HDTV's aren't doing anything but falling. And if you're a gamer, to truly appreciate next gen graphics you need a HD set.
As for HD DVD quality over standard, standard dvds are made to display 480 scan lines. HD displays in 1080 lines. Where as actual film has around 5000 I believe. Much like standard dvds quality can vary from movie to movie depending on how the director wanted the movie to look to how well the source print was maintained (older films), but generally speaking you're looking at a serious upgrade in quality. One of the most noticable things HD adds to picture quality is depth, the video gives off a more third dimensional look.
I wouldn't bet on BR dying quite yet, heres a breakdown of who's backing what format.
HD DVD:
Magnolia
Paramount
Universal
Warner Bros.
Weinstein Co.
Studio Canal (Europe)
Toshiba Entertainment (Japan)
Blu-ray:
Fox
Lionsgate
Magnolia
Paramount
Sony (Columbia)
Buena Vista (Disney/Touchtone/etc.)
Warner Bros.
As you can see both formats have huge libraries. Chances are you're going to like movies on both sides of the fence. Luckily some companies like Warner are backing both formats.

Thanks for the details Depression. 1200 sounds pretty reasonable though definitely something I wouldn't buy in the near future. I bought my current tv (finally a flat screen tv, yaaay!!!) for about 90 dollars. It's far better than the old tv I had. It was a really huge tv which was cool, but it was a TV/VHS one and the VHS got busted and screwed the tv up in a way that it was unfixable unless you got an uber rare component so I eventually gave it to the repair man. It was a shame to give that tv up cuse it was quite large, but it kept turning itself off automatically. I sometimes had to jam a knitting needle inside of it to keep it on, but it would turn off again in 15 minutes. Horribly annoying.
For some stranbge reason my current tv has this weird defect: the middle right part of the screen turns into a slightly differently tinted color if you watch it a lot during several days (like on vacations when I have free time to waste). Mostly the tint is barely noticeable; but when watching certain shows the blotch of color really shows. The blue sky turned magenta when I watch Rave Master. Really annoying. Too bad I don't know what became of the guarantee to have it changed cuse I don't think such a problem could get fixed unless the whole monitor was changed.
Well, if it's 1200 now, by 2010 it may cost only 500 or even less. I'll rather wait and see. My mom didn't switch to flat screen tv's when they came out immediately either. She finally changed when the tv stopped working and gave it to the repair man.
I can seriously see a lot of movies looking better with higher res, but most of my anime DVD's look great as they are. I don't see a huge splurge of everything being re-released in HD this soon.
Will the companies that back up Blu-ray continue to sell regular DVD's? It would be stupid not to. I just have a hunch not a lot of people will buy a dvd player that would only work for a small handful of movies. I bought my dvd player just some 3 years ago and was hoping it would last me more than a decade.

Wouldn't it be better to upgrade later, if the prices aren't doing anything but fall?
And also, PC gamers have been truly appreciating next-gen graphics for years.

Yeah, I don't see DVD dying anytime soon.
Disney is a BR backer and they just released Pirates OTC: Dead Man's Chest and have Chronicles of Narnia Extended Edition coming out next week.
Unlike VHS (obviouslY), the new HD and BR players are backwards compatible with current dvds so even though the standard is changing, the lifespan of regular dvds should be much longer.
Wouldn't it be better to upgrade later, if the prices aren't doing anything but fall?
True, I guess it depends how long you're going to wait. I have a 360 now, no sense in waiting.
Keep in mind 1200 is for a decent sized screen. You're looking at 600-800 for 32" tvs. Not bad.
