This was already done for real to much greater effect years ago. Someone stole a lawn gnome from a person's yard a number of years ago and sent them photos of said gnome in various places throughout the world.

Huh...wasn't that in the French movie 'Amélie' where the titular character steals her father's favorite lawn gnome and has her Flight Attendant friend take pictures of the gnome all around the world in an effort to entice her father to leave his house and travel?

I never saw that movie. And I don't recall any of the news reports I saw or read about the actual gnome theft mentioning any movies.
