Something like this:They met long long time ago.
Hohen creates stone, uses it to transfer bodies for himself and Dante.
Hohen leaves Dante to live with Ed's mom. Without him, Dante can't make another stone to transfer body again. So she uses homonculus to find ways to create the new philosopher's stone.

I assume anyone who's reading this thread knows it has obvious spoiler. You were warned.

Kinda like the way Lost Signal put it. Though I doubt they wanted to make the stone to transfer their souls cuse it seems like Dante switched his body in a freak act of desperation seeing as his body was seriously injured from equivalent exchange (kinda the same thing with Ed putting Al's soul into the armor as a quick fix before he could think of a better solution).

They were probably lovers at a time when Dante was an honest person. They had a daughter who eventually died from mercury poisoning. They used alchemy to try to revive their daughter but ended up creating Envy instead.

Guess living too long corrupted Dante's heart and Hohenheim wanted none of it anymore. Probably in some long voyage after leaving Dante with an ever smaller stone, he bumped into Trisha and fell in love with her. Having two kids, etc...

Dante obviously stopped loving Hohenheim after he escaped, she just wants to find him to make a new stone for her because she doesn't have the knowledge to make one herself. She basically trains the homunculi with the false hope of turning them into humans to find an alchemist that would make a stone. That's why you see Lust with Cornello (probably to create social unstability to get "ingredients"), the fat guy from the mining village the false Elrics lived in and the guy named Lujon that wanted to make a stone to save his village from the fossil disease (curiously the disease was "planted" there by the homunculi to create excuses for the people to find a stone).

Probably the manga is more deep about their past relationship.

I don't think Dante is in the manga.

I don't think she is either. In the manga, the humonculus answer to some badass named father.

Dante isn't in the manga at all she is just in the anime. About Hohenheim and Dante...
Dante and Hohenheim were together about 400 years ago trying to make the Philospher's Stone. Hohenheim almost died in its creation so Dante transfered his soul to another body with this new Stone. Eventually Hohenheim met and fell in love with Trisha and they had of course Edward and Alphonse. Envy who was the son of Hohenheim and Dante died of mercury posioning. Hoheneheim tried to bring him back which resulted in the homunculi known as Envy.

Well I guess that pretty much sums it up nicely.
